Trapped and Tortured
“The Holocaust survivors are among the most inspiring people I have had the privilege to meet.” -Jonathan Sacks. The Holocaust was one of the most catastrophic events in history. About eleven million people died and six million were Jews. This tragedy started on January 30, 1933 when a man named Adolf Hitler was made chancellor and ended in May 8, 1945. Survivors today are still shook up from this event. Why did the Nazis focus on the Jews and how did they torture them? The Nazis wanted to make a “super race” and they believed that the Jews got in the way of their plans. But the Nazis didn't just kill the jews, they used them for cheap labor. In spite of the warnings of the German’s plans for the Jewish Community, Elie’s family decide to stay in Transylvania. Because of this, they were captured and placed in a concentration camp. While being transported in cattle cars by train, 80 villagers were packed in tight, not even able to sit. Existing off of very little food and water, those who survived arrived in Auschwitz. They entered “the selection”, as guards with billy clubs sorted the healthy from the weak. Those who were considered “unfit” were sent to a death camp, while the others became workers. The story is told from the boy’s innocent point-of-view, as they do not understand the world around them. Although a fence separates the two, they become close friends. Throughout the movie, evidence of violence and murder are slowly revealed, which cause the boys to question reality. The Nazi raised boy, Bruno, gets an idea to bring a shovel and go explore the other side of the fence. He decides to help Shmuel find his father who has gone missing. They go into the barracks and where the guards, not knowing who Bruno was, forced them into the “showers”. “Silence” by Tadeusz Borowski is a short story about a concentration camp that was liberated by American soldiers. Unlike the other two stories, this memoir tells about the hatred and violence of Jews had of their former tormentors, the SS soldiers. In silence, the survivors capture an SS and start to take revenge. In the first paragraph, Borowski describes, “Here, closely surrounded by a silent mob, they began tearing at him with greedy hands” This statement shows the hatred and murderous intentions of the survivors.
