The Fight for Guns
I’m going to take about a topic that has many things that can be viewed either way and a problem that exists right now and has existed in the past. That topic that I’m going to talk about is strictly about guns.There have been many shootings that have gone on lately this year not to mention many years in the past that have led up to this point. Many people in this world have died because of some serious event where someone comes into an event of some sort and starts open fire. These events have killed many people. Many people in rural areas use their guns to either hunt or even to protect themselves to come to it. In urban areas I see that there are reasons to be scared of guns and why they would want them to be banned. Most of the people in cities see violence all of their lives. Many gun owners and non gun owners differ from different policies that might be passed for guns. They see shootings like everyone saw in Las Vegas or at the school in florida recently. Any of these events can happen anywhere or to anyone of us but it is most likely for gun violence to happen in bigger cities. Another thing that I see that alters different people’s opinions is one news station showing one thing on one side and another one on the other and also not all of them shows us the full picture and want to try an make things worse than what they are. With all of this happening my stance is that there should be more restrictions on guns. The real question that is going to answered is whether guns should be banned. Based on my research gun violence continues to rise year by year. This shows to me right off the bat that we got a problem with it and aren’t doing much about it. The next thing is that the amount of guns per person increase in each state the homicide rate goes up and so does the suicide rate.
There are many reasons that I see why people want guns to be banned such as mass shootings like the one in Las Vegas or the school shootings like the one in florida. Since the year 2000 there has been approximately 200 gun incidents that have happened on a school grounds. In our country we have about 1 shooting per day not involving gang or domestic violence related. We also have six times as many gun violence issues as canada.
There are many ways we can help this issue of gun violence. I’m going to talk about one easy and effective way which are background checks. Background checks are an easy way to keep guns away from someone with a bad gun history or violence history. The downside about this method is that it prevents licensed dealerships from selling guns to certain people but it can’t prevent people from selling guns illegally in the streets.A study done by Quinnipiac University showed that there shouldn’t be a big problem of passing background checks because approximately 97% of the political parties approved of this method. It has appeared that approximately every few months, media outlets report incidences of tragedy involving a sole gunman targeting groups of people with the intent to harm or extinguish life due to various motives. The United States will not soon forget the rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut that came just two weeks before Christmas last year. This tragic event resulted in the death of twenty students and eight adults. Although the event shocked the nation, rampage shootings are nothing new. Over the years, many families have lost loved ones to these horrific events. As a result, these mass shootings such as the one that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary caught public attention leading to a push to find the cause of these events. Out of this research a variety of possible causes came to light consisting of arguments stating that high school bullying, availability of guns, mental illness, violent movies and video games are the cause of mass shootings. According to The Chicago Tribune “Close to 3,000 people have been shot in Chicago so far this year.”In 2016 chicago homicide rate was at an all time high,last year there have been reported 762 people died from gun violence,”3,550 shooting incidents, and 4,331 shooting victims.”Hundreds of people have died from gun violence every year and also a portion of the murder rate is made up of innocent people that have also died from a firearm violence.Also in the united states the number of fatalities from a firearm were “33,594” according to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention.I believe we should ban the use of firearms because the number of people that die or get injured from a firearm keeps dangerously increasing each year.
Gun control and gun banning have been a highly controversial issue since all the gun crimes hitting the news in America. Crimes like Sandy-Hook , Aurora , San Berdindno , and Oregon have lawmakers thinking about banning guns by enacting laws that allows them to. Lawmakers believe guns are the prime suspect in all these gun violence crimes and they believe it well reduce murder and violence. Banning guns well do nothing to reduce the mass killings. If a criminal has the intent to commit a crime nothing can stop them. Also a criminal doesn’t abide by the law that is why they are criminals. Gun banning would only disarm the legal law abiding citizen leaving them defenseless. Also the right to bear arms is guaranteed by the Constution and the Bill of Rights. If lawmakers have the courage take away one Constutional right they will have the courage to keep going, I have three logical reasons why gun banning well not work.
Many people believe that these shootings have occurred is because the availability of weapons in our society. This is not true. Guns have been in our society for hundreds of years. Before 1968 anyone could buy a gun through the mail with cash, and a hand-written statement that they were of legal age and without criminal record. (Bridgeman 14a) Yet in 1968, students didn't go to school and try to commit mass murder.

Mass shootings have become a common occurrence in the United States society and have brought our society's safety debate to the attention of American politics. Both sides of the debate agree that we need more safety precautions but neither side can officially agree on what is to be done. What can we do about the raging number of mass shootings? There is no definite solution for mass shootings but there are precautions the United States can take to try to overcome the overwhelming number of mass shootings occurring. Gun Control is a major topic in the debate of how we can keep our society safer but how is what remains a mystery but we can start with altering the second amendment, and having stronger gun laws and background checks.
Nine students were killed at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. A man opened fire in a church, in Charleston, South Carolina, killing nine people, including the pastor. Twenty-seven were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Twelve were killed in the Washington Navy Yard. This is only a few examples from a very long list. The grim truth is that mass shootings are becoming the new normal. Every few months, another mass shooting occurs and the public goes through the same routine of mourning, honoring, and ultimately debating. What causes these manic episodes of multiple, indiscriminate gun deaths? Some push for more gun control, others argue that the U.S. mental health system is a failure. Controversy aside, mass shootings are on the rise, and it is imperative that the factors leading to these outbursts are accurately identified and appropriately addressed.
I believe that gun ownership should be completely restricted. Guns only promote violence. Limiting who can buy guns can only do so much. Even running background checks, to determine who would be mentally stable to own a gun would not prevent someone who cannot obtain a firearm himself. “The fact that people with problematic criminal and mental histories can own semi automatic and automatic weapons means that we need more laws passed to limit gun ownership even further.”” Such things would only promote a person to find someone, such as a close relative, to get the the firearm they would choose to have. However, permitting or forbidding guns completely would lead to an excess of problems. We would be left in a situation such that, only law enforcement officials would have all the authority and the weapons to control us more. According to Messer and Cartwright, background checks are a safer way to reduce the chances of endangering families. People who are against new laws misinterpret background checks with the belief that they can infringe on the rights of responsible gun owners. In actuality, background checks prevent known felons and unstable persons from acquiring weapons. The loophole with private sales of weapons, however, is that felons and mentally unstable buyers can purchase from a private seller without a background check. Gun violence in America is a public health crisis, which needs to be recognized and changed by legislatures, and the voting American. As conscious Americans, we need to vote for changes to gun laws that would improve background checks nation-wide, make firearm registration mandatory, restrict the sale of assault weapons and weapon modifications that give the shooter military-grade fire power, and invest in gun-safe technology and safe firearms storage designs. This type of technology will help prevent criminally oriented people from accessing guns, and will help prevent the accidental deaths of many children by guns. This essay will explain the reforms needed to help ensure Americans can still exercise their 2nd amendment right of owning firearms, and preventing the unnecessary deaths of many Americans at the same time.
Guns have the potential to inflict serious injuries, and intensify violence. Gun violence is a constant issue the United States has dealt with for many years. Gun violence is preventable. It can be prevented through a public health approach that keeps communities and families safe. Violence is an epidemic in this society. Preventing the spread of violence has to be a priority.
Supporters on this side say that without guns in our system, less homicides will happen and shooters will have a harder time finding weapons to use. Although a ban on guns seems like a great decision, there are many downfalls that will come with this policy. On Washingtonpost.com, a Gallop Poll was done and showed that 51% of people felt safer in homes with a gun. If guns became banned, the percentage would drop, and criminals, like rapists or burglars would have more motivation to commit crimes. In Australia, a country with extremely tight gun control, the rate of sexual assaults is 28.6% and in America, a country with loose gun control, the rate is 27.3%, so it is obvious that if America were to ban guns, the rate would increase. Another repercussion that results in taking away guns is actually more violence happening.
