This week, on Friday, the Paris Agreement is to be signed, putting in place a global climate protection treaty. This is a treaty formulated by human beings, largely, for the benefit of human beings, with additional but subordinate benefits for the Earth and its non-human inhabitants.

Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on 22 April, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network. Each year it is celebrated in approximately 200 countries.

Is humanity ready to heed the Earth’s sighing and accept these difficult truths?

One may ask, what real environmental harm is there done in my throwing away one plastic bag? But then, there are about six billion others who may ask the same question.

The answer then, is that if human beings throw away one plastic bag that is an environmental calamity. That is because we are never just one. We are always part of the whole. We are humanity, we are community, we are society, and we like to think we are civilisation.

How civilised is it to ignore the Earth’s sighing and dismiss these difficult truths? In truth, we do not act alone. What we each do affects the other and it affects our home – the Earth.
