Is there Life on Mars?
Alaina Smith
Georgia Military College Is there life on Mars? Almost every person in science has asked this question at least once in their life. While there are people who believe that there is, there are also the naysayers. Mars is one of the planets that have eluded us for centuries while we have landed on it and done studies; we have still yet to fully say that there was life on mars or that there currently is life on mars. Some scientists have dedicated their lives to finding out the answer. In this paper, both sides will be represented to fully understand this difficult question.
Supporting Arguments Water is needed for life to thrive on any planet, so by proving that there was or still is water on mars, a scientist could prove that there was life. Just last year NASA announced that they found what looked like “dark streaks”

Space Agency has stated that this proof is still not ready to prove that there is life on mars (Moskowitz). They are stating that water does not equal life. While water is crucial for life, it is not enough to prove that there is life on Mars. This article also states that in August 1996, NASA found a Martian rock that landed in Antarctica, which had holes in it that could have possibly contained bacterial life (Moskowitz). This was a huge announcement but has since been discredited with other forms of explanation. Science.org also had a few things to say about the NASA explorations. They stated that the rover Curiosity could not detect the gas Methane on the planet Mars, which is also essential for life (Cho). While this discovery was important it did not prove either way that there was or could be life on Mars. There have been many spacecraft that has flown to Mars and have spotted clouds of methane, but it has not been seen since 2006 (Cho). So this argument is slowly proving that Mars could not support life on it's dangerous
Imagine very little water source, never returning to Earth. Imagine standing in the middle of a sand storm, one of the many dangers on Mars. With no return to Earth, barely any water, hard conditions and dangers for anyone who goes, regular sand storms... This all proves that NASA should not send people to Mars. There’s a lot more research about space and Mars that needs to be done so we can know what other precautions to take before humans go and settle on Mars.
Would you want to live on Mars? Some would say yes, others no, I am against going to Mars and think that we should stick to Earth and put our time, money, and energy into fixing this planet. I will show you all the reason why we can not go to that red planet.
Why We Should go to Mars “It was obvious to me that we could never colonize Mars without reusability, any more than America would have been colonized if they had to burn the ships after every trip,”(Dave, 2017). This is what Elon Musk said in an interview in Fortune Magazine on December 9th 2013. The fourth planet in our solar system, Mars, is the closest “Earth-like” planet, Which is why SpaceX, NASA, and many other organizations are trying to make a human trip to Mars possible, as well as learning many things about Mars and Earth at the same time. Mars has a lot of potential to be a habitable planet to continue the human race.
Since the beginning of human fascination with outer space, the question “Is there life on other planets?” has existed and has waited to be answered. Early astronomers looking to find life on other planets were brutally punished by the Catholic Church. For years, people saw these astronomers as heretics for going against the church and undesirable, but today there might be evidence that supports these astronomers. Today, we find that people are still split between believing in alien life or not. People devoted to a religion tend to disagree with the possibility of life anywhere but Earth as it goes against their beliefs. However, with the increase of realistic movies about aliens and very convincing theories, many young people are beginning to believe that life on other planets does not seem so radical after all. Each day, scientists find more and more predictive evidence that leads most of them to believe that there is life on other planets.
The existence of life – Aliens, beyond our planet has been a controversial topic for several centuries, and is a debatable issue even today in the 21st century. What is our topic you may ask? Aliens, Do, Exist. According to theoretical physicist, Stephen Hawking, it would be improbable for life not to exist somewhere other than Earth. This is a bold claim, but there is evidence to support this statement. The evidence we seek is in the many Alien occurrences we have experienced throughout human history.
“I think humans will reach Mars, and I would like to see it happen in my lifetime” was said by Buzz Aldrin, a NASA astronaut. The former American aeronaut from Montclair, New Jersey believes that since Mars does exist, it is waiting to be reached by humans. When this would happen, he says that the human race would “evolve into a two-planet species.” Present day Mars has a lot of canyons, mountains and volcanoes. Even though the surface is Mars is very old, scientists learned about different younger rift valleys, plains, hills and ridges. According to recent reports, there were lakes and rivers, along with an ocean billions of years ago. The low temperatures on the planet cause there to be polar ice caps and frozen water present. Scientists continue to notice several discoveries on the planet that lead them to think there was once life on the planet. Different clues have scientists wanting to find out about even more. Many scientists in the past few centuries have been curious if life on Mars is possible or if it has ever been before.
Intelligent life outside of Earth is one of the most debated topics in The United States of America. There are plenty of shows on television about it and supposedly there has been thousands of sightings all throughout America. Our government is thought of to have encountered and held extraterrestrials. Area 51 is where everyone theorizes that we hold and run tests on aliens, even though there is little evidence. There are also ancient stories told about “gods” coming down and doing inhuman things. In cave paintings you can find UFOs in the pictures, even back then they somehow knew of these flying objects. Most people do not want to recognize that our universe is so vast it would be more likely that there is intelligent life out there than there is not. It is possible that the general population is afraid to acknowledge Aliens’ existence because they cannot imagine a species being more advanced and smarter than us. Another reason people fail to recognize them is because the media has made these “creatures” very far fetched with
Scientists have dreamt over the possibility that it may be possible to live on another planet. Some think that Mars has that potential to support life, if it's hidden resources are uncovered and exploited to their full potential. There is even evidence that it once contained enough water that it had been possible to hold life. Think about it, what if we could transform it into such a place, even if only our children's children get to see any result? The following will describe Mars, present evidence of ice and water, give possible ideas for the future exploration of Mars, and give reasons for why it is important.
Recently, two probes were sent back and they made it to Mars. They landed on the South Polar Caps of Mars. That is where NASA plans to find water. After landing on Mars, the probes extracted water like crystals from the surface of Mars. They found that there was a small amount of water in the crystals, which means that there is a strong chance that life, was on Mars at one time.
The startling discovery took place 43 years after the humankind launched the first rovers, Spirit and Opportunity to Mars. It’s the result of hard work of the best brains, who had one goal: to understand whether we are alone in the universe or not.
If we know what makes life on earth habitable, we may be able to figure out how to sustain life on other planets. Using our knowledge about life on Earth will enable us to learn more about information on other planets. It is important to compare the life sustained on Earth and the life on another planet, as they could contrast each other greatly. According to NASA, many missions have taken place and many more will continue in the future (Fletcher 2016). The great number of missions operating shows how significant a question like “Is there life?” can be. This one question can unravel into many more sub-questions, such as the questions described
Statistics have showed 7.5% of rocks from Mars reached Earth. These rocks would travel between less than 100 years to 16,000 years and more to get to Earth. Some proponents include Gyon de Montlivant, who proposed that life came from moon, H.E. Richter, who suggested life came from meteorites or comets, but Svante Arrhenius proposed this theory.
Water provides the necessary conditions for life. Of course, there are a lot of water resources on Mars, and billions of years ago there could be organisms on Mars. However, they are likely to have been eliminated by climate change. So, we can conclude that there may have been life on Mars but for special some reason it already disappeared, but it is undeniable that Mars is the only planet in the solar system close to the Earth's ecological environment. Maybe in the future people may go to Mars to live and
One of the most common unanswered questions scientists find themselves asking is "Is there life on other planets?" Since the first famously documented UFO sighting in 1947, the idea of extra-terrestrial life has been debated almost non-stop. The subject has inspired many TV programs, such as The X-Files, and films (Mars Attacks, Independence Day, and the Men in Black films to name but a few). Scientists have come up with many new ideas and ways of trying to either prove or disprove the existence of life elsewhere.
...ws radiation from the sun to expose the surface of the planet, adding to environment changes. If life exists on Mars today, it is most likely hiding beneath the surface. Over the past four billion years Earth has had many rocks blown from the surface of Mars, after much research, scientists say that of the thirty-four meteorites, three have the potential to carry evidence of past life on Mars (Carey, 2006). Researches have gathered evidence and continue to explore for life outside of Earth. Earth has provided these scientists with enough knowledge to understand the components needed to sustain life, therefore any research found is compared to the knowledge already understood about life on Earth. Earth is home to billions of plants, animals, bacteria and all types of living things, it is where human beings have evolved and adapted making this planet our home.
