Is Addiction a Disease?

Addiction is defined as a strong and harmful need to regularly have something like drugs or do something such as gambling. No one wants to be an addict, everyone wants to have fun but when you need to do something repeatedly to feel normal that’s addiction. Addiction is a big thing in this world and we have to stop ignoring it and accept addiction for what it is in order to help the people who need it. Addiction is a disease because it affects your brain, it’s part of your biology, and your environment. The brain is the most important part of our body, when we do something that’s considered rewarding the brain wants more. When the brain feels good, it means you are flooding your brain with dopamine. When I say biology I’m referring to a persons genetics and heredity. Each person has a different physiology and genetics, some people like doing things more than others, whereas someone could play a game for a few hours and be okay not playing that game for a year but others will have to play that game every single day to feel better. Heredity is a big part of addiction; it’s all in our genes. Someone born with alcoholic parents are more likely to have an addictive personality because it’s in their genes and it’s what they’re used to.
“The ability to temper impulsive desires with rational thought is a brain function that varies among different people. Some people may have a deficiency in their capacity to resist certain types of impulses. Thus, these folks would be at greater risk for developing an addiction because of their genetic vulnerability.”
Addiction doesn’t just happen to people with weak willpower. Remember that if you come from a household where your mother is an alcoholic doesn’t mean you’ll be an alcoholic; you could become addicted to smoking or gambling. The biggest environmental factors of addiction are stress, abuse, and the availability of drugs and/or alcohol. Children and teens that have parents that neglect them cause them to become more open to the idea of trying different substances. Other children who live with abuse might go towards alcohol or drugs to drown out there emotions. Addiction usually starts when you’re a teenager, it’s more available, your friends are doing it, and peer pressure. When you have a hard time coping with everyday life you tend to start using which later ends up with you abusing a substance. That one time can affect your whole life. If you have an addictive personality you really need to watch your environment. You have to be careful of who your friends are, where you are hanging out, and look at your family history. If you know addiction is big in your family you’re better off not even trying any substances, the risks are too high.
