“Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job,and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never healthcare. And that's the story that we’re not seeing, and it's unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock”(Mike Huckabee). There are three reasons why women shouldn't receive less welfare benefits for each child born out of wedlock; not enough good jobs to support a family, being married does not define how financially stable someone is, and the father leaving the mother to become a single parent. Firstly, women shouldn't receive less welfare benefits for each child born out of wedlock, because there are not enough good jobs to support a family. Most jobs wants people to have at least an high school diploma and most single moms are teenagers who didn't finish high school. “If teen mothers finish high …show more content…
school before having kids, they could get good jobs.” (Do Poor Women Have a Right to Bear Children?). Some single moms are working two or more jobs to make ends to met that are not really meeting. Working two or more part time jobs making minimum wage isn't enough to survive in America with a family. Research stated that,“According to the National Women’s Law Center, half of minimum wage workers are adult women, 75 percent of whom don’t have another household earner to supplement their income; in West Virginia, a shockingly high 80 percent of workers at the lowest economic rung are female. That means that in 1 in 3 households supported by single mothers live in poverty.” (Nico Lang) Also, being married does not define how financially stable someone is. “And while many Americans require two incomes to support children, marriage is no guarantee of two steady incomes.” (Katie McDonough). This shows that if someone married with kids or with child out of wedlock you are not guaranteed financial stability. Financial stability requires you to a reasonably secure job with a comfortable income. Without financial stability someone will have to look for other alternatives such as government assistance. Finally, women shouldn't receive less welfare benefits for each child born out of wedlock, because the fathers leaving the mothers to be single parents.
In a study conducted by Roshan "Bob" D. Ahuja, Xavier University and Kandi M. Stinson, Xavier University, 94 million households in the United States, with 67 million or 71 percent considered family households and 27 million or 29 percent considered nonfamily households (Waldrop and Exter 1990). Of the 67 million family households, approximately 12 percent will be females heading families alone, compared to 5 percent in 1970. Female-headed single parent families represent the fastest growing family type, up 36 percent since 1980 (Waldrop and Exter 1990). This research shows that single moms are doing everything in the household alone without any help of the father of the child. “But thanks to a number of factors, once the child comes along, unmarried fathers can become stressed out and discouraged.” (Gloria Ryan) Women should not have to have less welfare benefits, because the child father scared to own up to his
responsibilities. In Conclusion, women receiving less benefits for each child they have out of wedlock will put their kids in harm's way. Receiving less benefits will have single parent homeless and hungry. People may think having children out of wedlock is desirable and enhanced it is very unfortunate that single moms go through this alone without help from the fathers of the child only help is through government assistance.
It seems like the Welfare system treats its recipients with disrespect and shame to discourage them from joining the system. The people who made and run Welfare in the 1990s made Welfare into a blame game and forces recipients to solely blame themselves for their poverty. The moral prescriptions in individually getting rid of poverty according to TANF are the Work Plan/Family Plan. The focuses on work and family are contradictory because of how little time there is to get both goals done and each goal perpetuates the idea that it is the most important part of ending poverty. It seems like Welfare is more about getting people off of Welfare than eradicating poverty. There is a difference in the goals and that is reflected in how the recipients are treated and how Welfare is run.
The new reforms, put into action by President Bill Clinton, have succeeded in dropping the recipients off the rolls. Dan Froomkin, of The Washington Post, says that under the old system, welfare was handed out to anyone for any number of years. The new system, however, requires most recipients to work within two years of receiving assistance, and limits most assistance to five years total (internet). Welfare was also misused by allowing mothers to keep having children, enabling them to receive additional benefits. Froomkin reports that the new reform allows states to establish a policy where welfare families are allowed no added i...
...to provide enough incentive to single mothers with only one child to get these women to enter the labor market, which means that the program is failing to draw women away from traditional welfare programs. Failing to draw these women from traditional welfare programs means that the Earned Income Tax Credit is not succeeding in relieving the strain that traditional welfare programs can put on the economy. Due to welfare reform that has taken place in the last decade such as a “decline in cash welfare benefits for non-workers” (Hoynes, 2007) single mothers have far fewer options than they have in the past, and the expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit program can be a savior for these single parents in need of assistance, as long as the assistance is enough to cover the costs associated with supplying labor to an economy while still raising a child. (Hoynes, 2007)
Close to 60% of children in the united states, who are living in a single mother family are impoverished. However, only 11% of two parent families are in poverty. This is very important because there are close to approximately 10,000,000 single mother families in the united states, and if 60% of those are in poverty, then close to 6,000,000 families are in poverty in the U.S. because they have a single mother. This is an issue because that is a lot of people living in poverty. If women don't get paid enough because of their lower paying jobs and the wage gap, then it is almost impossible to raise children while being a single mother. Also, many parents take time off of their work to take care of their children. Single parents usually have to take more time off of their work to take care of their child. However, this is difficult for salaries. An article about parenting says , “Some large or family-friendly companies employees six paid weeks of maternity leave, but many do not.”. This is an issue. IF mothers, specifically single mothers are not paid while taking care of their children, then it is way harder to stay above the poverty line. Children already cost a lot of extra money for two parent families, and if single mothers take time off to take care of their kids without any pay, then that makes the poverty problem
Being raised in a single-parent lower class home, I realize first-hand the need for welfare and government assistance programs. I also realize that the system is very complex and can become a crutch to people who become dependent and complacent. As a liberal American I do believe that the government should provide services to the less fortunate and resources to find work. However, as able-bodied citizens we should not become complacent with collecting benefits and it is the government’s job to identify people who take advantage of the system and strip benefits from people who are not making efforts to support themselves independently. I will identify errors that exist within the welfare system and several policy recommendations to implement a change that will counteract the negative conditions that currently exist.
One of the issues that demonstrated how sexism and heterosexism shape social welfare policy is the plight of single mothers. The well-being of single-parents, especially single mothers has been an important issue for the United States given that at least 50 percent of children who are currently growing up in the country will spend part of or their entire childhood in a single-parent family (Casey & Maldonado, 2012). As compared to other countries, single-parent families in the United States are worst off with high unemployment rates and poverty rates. This issue demonstrates how sexism and heterosexism influence social welfare policy since it has been the basis of establishment of various regulations to address the problem. The issue has been the basis of the implementation of TANF to deal with the high unemployment and poverty rates of single mothers. However, this policy has been ineffective since it makes people become more independent and does not meet the needs of women effectively. Therefore, it continues to be the basis for policy considerations to help single
...legally. And since each family receives about 11,500 dollars annually, that means that about nine to thirteen billion dollars are being collected in taxes in order to be given in the form of government assistance (D’Souza 1). That’s nine billion dollars being taken from people’s incomes for people that legally do not need to be receiving any type of assistance. This is unnecessary and tax payers would appreciate keeping their money instead of it going to those so greedy with money. Welfare in the United States is used to get people financially from below the poverty line so that they can find jobs and then without the assistance can be able to provide for their family in an appropriate mean of the standard of living. Welfare is not supposed to be used for a person who is ineligible for it because they are making way more than the amount allowed in order to qualify.
...hey make more than $250,000. People that have a low income will be qualified for Medicaid. Many people are abusing the welfare system which is costing the government a lot of money. This way of thinking is hurting the economy and should be stopped. "A group of State attorneys general is challenging the constitutionality of the laws requirement that everyone buy health insurance." (Clemmitt). State attorney's are trying to stop everyone from getting free health insurance. Health care is too expensive to give it to every U.S. citizen free of charge. Medical expenses are expected to rise 80 percent by 2017. Efforts to fix the problems cause by the welfare system should be greater.
At the same time, the evidence of a link between the availability of welfare and out-of-wedlock births is overwhelming. There have been 13 major studies of the relationship between the availability of welfare benefits and out-of-wedlock birth. Of these, 11 found a statistically significant correlation. Among the best of these studies is the work done by June O'Neill for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Holding constant a wide range of variables, including income, education, and urban vs. suburban setting, the study found that a 50 percent increase in the value of AFDC and foodstamp payments led to a 43 percent increase in the number of out-of-wedlock births.(7) Likewise, research by Shelley Lundberg and Robert Plotnick of the University of Washington showed that an increase in welfare benefits of $200 per month per family increased the rate of out-of-wedlock births among teenagers by 150 percent.
According to the article “Rather than confirming the home as a haven from the heartless world, this study has revealed the heartlessness of the system in which mothers and nannies are caught,” the researcher wants people to know, instead of that the child becoming a well respectful adult in society, there is a possibility that the child will experience some trouble in becoming that person in his/her later life, because of the constant conflict between mothers and nannies; puppeteer is the main reason for these conflict.
The Family structure has changed significantly in the last fifty years. With higher percentages of marriage ending in divorce, and higher rates of childbearing out of wedlock, single parent families are increasing rapidly. “Seventy percent of all the children will spend all or part of their lives in a single-parent household.” (Dowd) Studies have shown that the children of these families are affected dramatically, both negatively and positively. Women head the majority of single- parent families and as a result, children experience many social problems from growing up without a father. Some of these problems include lack of financial support, and various emotional problems by not having a father around, which may contribute to problems later in life. At the same time, children of single-parent homes become more independent because they learn to take care of themselves, and rely on others to do things for them.
A single parent household is a house with only one parent and one or multiple children. Single parent households are becoming very common in all racial and ethnic groups because it is no longer required for people to be married before they have children. Most households only have one parent because of divorce, never being married, separated, widowed, or because of business. The most common are, separation, divorce and just simply never being married. In these cases it is usually the mother who is the single parent. It is not too often that you see a father taking care of their child by themselves. This is usually because they do not know how, or they simply do not want to take care of their child. Statistics show that family structure has a big impact on certain characteristics of a child such as their attitude and level of respect. Children tend to be less respectful to people because they do not respect the parent who is not around. In many cases a child may become depressed living with only one parent causing them to get out of control and do things that they shouldn’t. Sometimes the child may feel like they are incomplete leaving them to do crazy things to find what they feel like they are missing. often times the child feels that they are the reason their parents are not together.
As you probably already have heard, Xavier Dolan's Mommy is not a laid-back inquiry into the joys of motherhood, but a shout-em-down contest of wills between Steve (Antoine Olivier Pilon), an out-of-control teenager suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and his mother Diane Després (Anne Dorval), whose parental skills are severely challenged. Needless to say, there can be no winners in such a contest. Winner of the Jury Prize at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, Mommy is shot in a 1:1 aspect ratio which is like living inside of a cardboard box with no windows. This choice may seem appropriate to the director, but, for the viewer, it feels like always being short of breath. Supported by a potpourri of 90s biggest hits, Mommy takes place in 2015 in a fictional Canada where a new law has been passed allowing parents to put their children in an institution without the need for any messy legal proceedings.
Single Parent Struggle For many years, children growing up in a single parent family have been viewed as different. Being raised by only one parent seems impossible to many yet over the decades it has become more prevalent. In today’s society many children have grown up to become emotionally stable and successful whether they had one or two parents to show them the rocky path that life bestows upon all human beings. The problem lies in the difference of children raised by single parents versus children raised by both a mother and a father.
...not on welfare do not have more children if they cannot support their families. Middle and Upper class families are paying the government in tax dollars to support mothers who continue to have children even though they know they cannot support themselves. Also, a single mother who chooses to have another child while being on welfare severely decreases her chances to go off welfare because she will need to stay at home with her children. This promotes a woman’s dependency on welfare.
