In today’s modern world, you have to have an education to be successful. After all, more and more of today's jobs are knowledge-based or require advanced technical skills. And high school won’t fit the bill. You need a college degree to be successful. A college degree has become a necessity in today’s society. Most students who go to college have to take out loans to pay for school. College education should be free because every citizen should have the right to obtain an education without going in to debt. A lot of people who would otherwise go to college don’t because of tuition costs. The average tuition costs 16,188 dollars. In 1978, it was possible to earn enough money to pay for a year of college tuition just by working a summer job that paid minimum wage (Politifact). Today, it would take a minimum wage worker an entire year to earn enough to cover tuition at a public university. Take for example my friend Jessica. Jessica is taking 15 credit hours and works a part time job; to pay off school. Most days Jessica is in class five to six hours and works anywhere between three to six hours a day. Americans in college owe more than 1.4 trillion in student loan debt (Student Loan Hero). That amount of debt is higher than of total credit card debt. While taking out student loans does help pay tuition, it often puts a strain on the student when they are out of school. Many students have to move back in with their parents to afford pay off the debts. Look at Jackie Krowen, for example, took out a student loans and when she graduated in 2011 she 128,000 in debt and has to pay 1,200 a month for her student loans (Faces of Student Loan Debt).
