Deciphering Immigration: Causes, Effects, and Solutions

Recently, problems have risen from the causes and effects of immigration and what should be done about it. Immigration is defined as, “The act of entering and settling into a new country” (Emigration and Immigration). The problem seems to be whether we should welcome immigrants or see them to the door and this problem occurs when the two viewpoints battle it out to see who is right.
There are causes and effects for this issue. One claims, “One is to escape persecution based on religious or other beliefs” (Emigration and Immigration). Others claim to seek to unite with loved ones that have already emigrated regardless of the stage of assimilation (Emigration and Immigration). Also, the article states, “A main motivation of many immigrants is to simply escape poverty and take advantage of economic opportunities that do not exist in their native land” (Emigration and …show more content…

As one article reports, “You need a visa regime that lets those looking to feed their families and looking for a better life to enter legally, with a minimum of muss and fuss” (Lee). This article is taking the moral standpoint by placing the immigrants in a group less privileged than the American population. Other standpoints can include arguments such as they have fewer opportunities, lower standards of living, and less economic opportunities (jobs and investments). Also, the article addresses the phrase “they mooch off the government” by saying, “Mainstream economists have thoroughly debunked this general stereotype of immigrants as takers, finding that immigrants are a net positive for the economy and pay more into the system than they take out” (Lee). These numbers clash with the numbers on the other side of the spectrum, and the different viewpoints could not be further apart from each other.
