Actively Learn, “American Dream” 5) The American Dream is nearly impossible to achieve. “Life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.” (James Truslow Adams) He believed that everyone had equal rights and should all be given equal opportunity. Adams had this whole idea that if you worked hard enough, the American Dream is reachable. Though, the discrimination against groups across the U.S. makes it impossible to live the “dream” life. White men of America were gifted privileges, as they were presented with opportunities that’ll bring them up in the hierarchy of society. During the 19th century, along with the idea of the American Dream, came Manifest Destiny. A quote from the Actively Learn article, “To many white Americans, this is the promise of freedom and opportunity. However, to Native Americans who lived across the continent, it meant that their rights to property were ignored, and their human dignity debased.” (Actively Learn, “American Dream” 8) Any man who was not a white male was treated differently, making their life extremely impractical.
