Today, I picked a local news for What’s in the news II from The Washington Post. There was not a single day that I watch the news without any report of gun-related news. Conversely, this is relevant to what we’ve been covering because it deals with domestic (government) policy, (gun law: licenses, criminal and civil penalties) This is important because some schools are disrupting their classes to walk outside in protest against gun violence. Although I’m not against these protests, we too, shouldn’t disregard other facts behind this gun violence.

Michael Moore’s documentary, “Bowling for Columbine,” attempts to expose the truth of gun violence in the United States of America. While his argument is persuasive, its impact is lessened with his use of logical fallacies, such as hasty generalization, post hoc, and appeal to doubtful authority. Moore’s film is thrillingly entertaining, but it is hard to look past the gaping holes in some of his logic.
In his article “Gun debate? What gun debate?” Mark O 'Mara discuses the controversial issue of gun control. O’Mara takes the tragic school shooting in Oregon as an opportunity to voice his opinion on the debate of guns. He clearly states his position and explains that gun violence has increased enormously because of the lack of command by the government and support from the public to speak out against it. O’Mara claims the issue is no longer a debate because it is so evident that guns have become a significant problem in this country and therefore actions must be taken to control and govern gun laws. In his article he attempts to raise awareness to the severity of the issue and tries to persuade his readers to take a stance against gun violence
Guns have possessed the spotlight of almost every news station. From the latest tragedy of a shooting killing innocent men, women and children to the arguments centering around if our gun laws possess strict enough qualities to keep our country safe. Charles C. W. Cooke, the author of “Gun-Control Dishonesty”, spreads his conservative view on the topic by ripping away any hope for a brighter day. Cooke’s main idea states that if nothing has happened to make gun law more strict even after the lives of innocent children were mercilessly ripped away from their young bodies than nothing should or could ever change. A few days after this regrettable incident, a columnist of The Washington Post, Fareed Zakaria, wrote an article titled “The Solution to Gun Violence is Clear” published on December 19, 2012 by the Washington Post, in which he brings to debate gun violence and its possible causes. One of the most obvious characteristic of a school shooter would be parental neglect. This neglect was evident in both the Columbine shooters as well as fictional character, Peter Houghton. If Dylan and Eric’s parents took interest in their sons, they would have recognized the boys’ obvious dysfunctional thinking. Written on the front of Harris’s journal was, “I hate the fucking world.” (Rosenburg). He continued to write that he hates racists, martial arts experts, and people who brag about their cars. Through out the following pages, he continued to state what else he hates, including Star Wars fans, people who mispronounce words, and other ridiculous things. If parents believed that their sons were normal, the boy’s yearbook should have definitely raised a red flag. This was a very informative article. I was unaware of all the deaths in result of gun violence. I didn’t realize that people who worked for the government or who was in congress were often targets. In order to fully get rid of gun violence in schools, each and every school should have metal detectors that can detect weapons and always have security guards on duty. By doing this, parents are more comfortable with sending their students off to school. Taking this step in every school around the world would definitely cost lots of money but it will honestly be worth it. By appealing to several different views, Wheeler is able to grab every reader’s attention. Using schools as his focus point grabs the reader’s attention on a personal level. A school is a place where your children, your friends, your spouses all could be, and we still aren’t motivated to change our gun control laws. Tragic events do not have to happen like those that occurred at Virginia Tech, The Jewish Day care in Los Angeles, and Pearl High School. Wheeler believes concealed carry should be allowed in every school. Let’s make the students and teachers of these schools and colleges their own heroes. Indeed, this is more than a quarter of the world’s registered firearms. The reason why Americans own so many guns is because of the Second Amendment, which states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (Rauch) This amendment guarantees U.S. citizens the right to have firearms. Since this amendment is relatively vague, it is up for interpretation, and is often used by gun advocates to argue for lenient gun laws. If we had less selious politicians than more would get done and greater stronger laws would be enacted and the brady law would not stand on its own. The right to bear arms is guaranteed in the constitution by the Second Amendment. Liberals are looking to amend the constitution any way they can. They want to ban handguns or at least restrict sales. Studies have shown that gun control cannot stop people from committing the crime.
Life in America continues to peak on the account of freedom and advancements. However, there are still some fights for freedom that are in jeopardy. The right to bear arms is a prime example, and the fight to preserve it is threatened daily. Before government took action against the unjust setup of the sexes, women were left in the shadows and rarely received equal opportunities. The fight for equality was long and difficult, but finally their voices were heard.
