The political issue of same-sex marriage has recently become one of the biggest debates of the 21st century. Its rise in popularity soared within the United States in 2000, when Vermont became the first state in the country to recognize these types of unions between same-sex couples. I believe that same-sex couples should not be denied of their right to marry, but there are several believable arguments, which contradict my opinion on the topic. These arguments include the beliefs that; allowing same-sex couples to wed will cause the institution of marriage to crumble, citizens of the United States should not have to pay taxes to support something which they believe to be wrong, and that the legalization of same-sex marriage could lead to the legalization of other nontraditional marriages throughout the United States. All of these arguments pose intriguing points, which make me question, is it all really worth it?
It is said time and time again by those who detest same-sex marriage that the bible defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. This is not untrue, there are several verses throughout the entirety of the bible, which make same-sex marriage sound extremely sinful. If one were to search for one of these verses they would surely be able to find several in no time. One example goes as follows:
Leviticus 20:13, "If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."
That’s only one of the many verses that describe these relationships as sinful, so why do people continue to argue against this religious text on the issue? There are many reasons for it: true love, atheism, etc. But just like ot...

...r relationships or to stop seeing each other completely, but to simply not put a title to their relationship. This isn’t too much to ask in exchange for keeping the culture of the United States deeply rooted and unchanged. To change such a significant aspect of our culture would make many citizens uncomfortable and would undoubtedly lead to rage and chaos within our nation. These are the arguments that have come the closest to changing my mind, but they are still a long-way off of my beliefs, as a critical thinker I have formed my beliefs and cannot imagine that I will be swayed enough by one of these ideas to the point where I will change my mind. With that stated, this is a very sensitive and complex issue, which should not be taken lightly, so in my opinion all arguments made for and against same-sex marriage are completely valid and should be taken into account.
