“The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not
bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but
without folly.”-Jim Rohn This quote shows what someone needs to do to be a leader. Archie Forbes
from G.A. Henty’s In Freedom’s Cause does qualify to be a leader following these rules. Some of the
most important qualities of a leader are to be bold, intelligent, and proud. Archie has all three of these
characteristics. Archie Forbes from G.A. Henty's In Freedom's Cause does qualify as a good leader
because he is brave, smart, and has integrity.
First, Archie Forbes demonstrated leadership through being brave. Archie is always

brave and prepared to fight anyone.
For example, Archie Forbes stands up to Sir John Kerr in the beginning of the
story. In the story, Archie looked fearlessly at Sir John Kerr and said, "I am Archie Forbes, and I vail
my bonnet to no man living save those whom I respect and honour”(Henty 39). This quote shows how
brave Archie is even though Sir John Kerr can order him to be killed at any time. Also, Archie helped
Sir William Wallace in a street fight against the English. The story says, "Archie hesitated no longer,
but, drawing his sword, rushed through the soldiers, and placing himself by the side of Wallace, joined
the fray"(47). Even though the odds of surviving weren’t looking good, Archie rushed to Wallace’s
side. One reason that Archie is a good leader, is that he is brave.
Additionally, through being smart, Archie demonstrates leadership. Being clever and able to
strategize, is one key to success. For instance, Archie sent messengers to Ayr to see if the Scottish
nobles were endangered by the meeting that the English setup. In the story, Archie told Wallace,
"Treachery is intended- my messenger has overheard it" (83). Archie ended up saving Sir William
Wallace and many others from the devastation at the Barns of Ayr, which was where the meeting
was held. Archie also lead his men, and himself, out of the cave in the Pentlands by strategizing what to do. Archie ordered them to make bundles of dirt, and then he piled them up in front of the entrance. The English pursuing them figured they would die, so they left. After the English left, Archie and his men were able to come out safely (104). Archie's intelligence is one reason that he qualifies as a good leader. Finally, Archie demonstrates being a good leader because of his integrity. Archie stuck to what he believed in throughout the whole story. For example, Archie always wanted Scotland's freedom, and he wanted to regain his father's land. The story says, "Day and night he thought of nothing but the lost freedom of Scotland, and vowed that even the hope of regaining his father’s lands should be secondary to that of freeing his country”(23). This quote shows that more than anything, even revenging his father’s death and reclaiming his lands, Archie wants his country’s freedom. In addition, while in Colonsay, Archie stood firm to his beliefs about the freedom of Scotland and about Wallace. The prior though was skeptical about Sir Wallace, Archie was always defending Wallace (213). No matter what, Archie always follows his beliefs. Another good characteristic of a leader, that Archie possesses, is integrity. In the end, Archie Forbes from G.A. Hentys In Freedom’s Cause is brave, smart, and he has integrity. These qualities allow him to be a phenomenal leader. “Leadership requires the courage to make decisions that will benefit the next generation.”-Alan Autry. This quote shows that even though something might not effect a group of people at the present time , it may help descendants in the future. In In Freedom’s Cause, Archie, Wallace, and their army might not get freedom during their generation, but it may happen in the next one. Anyone who is brave, smart, and has integrity can be a very successful leader.
Brent, Liz. "Critical Essay on 'The Invisible Man; or, “Battle Royal'." Short Stories for Students.
“Leadership is a process in which many can engage, not a position that only a few can hold.
What characteristics do leaders embody? In today’s society, leaders convey strength and kindness with no attention paid to their downfalls. In A Separate Peace, Phineas is a leader with flaws, despite his high standing amongst others. John Knowles characterizes Phineas as a naive and daring static character in his novel A “Separate Peace” by employing dialogue, action, and Gene’s descriptions and feelings towards him.
“‘I ought to be chief,’” said Jack with simple arrogance, “‘because
Ellison begins "Battle Royal" with a brief introduction to the story's theme with a passage from the Invisible Man's thoughts: "All my life I had been looking for something, and everywhere I turned someone tried to tell me what it was. . . I was looking for myself and asking everyone questions that I, and only I, could answer. It took me a long time and much painful blending of my expectations to achieve a realization everyone else appears to have been born with: that I am nobody but myself. But first I had to discover that I am an invisible man!" Ellison, 556.
In Battle Royal, the first chapter of Invisible Man, Ralph Ellison creates a vivid picture of the volatile relationships between the black inhabitants of an unnamed southern state and the dominant Whites of the area through master full use of imagery and complex figurative language. From the context of the story one can safely assume it takes place in the mid to late 40s, a time in American history where Jim Crow laws were in full effect and Whites controlled almost every aspect of the society. In brief, the story recounts an event in the anonymous narrator’s life where he was invited to speak at an special occasion yet is coerced into participating in a brutal melee against several other boys. The brawl is sport to entertain the men there
“In order to be a good leader, there are two things to remember. Lead from the Front and always set the Example. From these two leadership principles, everything else will fall into place.”
... While William sieged the town, they had animal hides laid about as an insult towards William’s mother. This slight infuriated William to such a great extent, he lashed out by savagely killing many of the citizens of the town, to defend his mother’s name. This act of brutality marked one of the last times of anarchy and William now had complete authority over Normandy. Through excellent skill in combat, thought out courting, and striking fear, William had regained control of what was once his father’s.
In Ralph Ellison’s novel “Invisible Man”, Ten young African American boys are thrown blindfolded into a ring and are forced to fight for the enjoyment of higher class white men in what the narrator calls a “Battle Royal” (Ellison p.17). Included in this battle royal is the main character, who was unwillingly thrown into the fight at the last second. Although the young African American men were initiated into the white society through the battle royal, they were not initiated as equals, and during the degrading fight, the narrator can only think of giving his speech.
In the 1950s, Ralph Ellison published Invisible Man which focused on the racial invisibility of people of color. The chapter, “Battle Royal,” reflects a pre-Civil Rights Era where blacks and whites were considered “separate, but equal.” Ellison describes a life where blacks were separate, but not truly equal because they still lived a life where they had to be careful and live consciously around whites or face harassment or even death. In Ellison’s story, an unnamed narrator receives a letter awarding him a scholarship. The narrator is asked to deliver a speech and at the event, he discovers that he will need to participate in a “battle royal.” In Ellison’s narrative, the event of the required “battle royal” symbolically illustrates how the
Some common themes found in the work are self-discovery and invisibility. In “Battle Royal” readers are recipients of the central message self-discovery when one comes in familiarity with the part in text reading “I am nobody but myself. But first I had to discover that I am an invisible man” (Ellison 2395). Readers can see how the narrator was faced with conflict several times throughout the work in his path to discovering his true self. Readers find themselves being recipients of the central message of invisibility when the narrator reveals the M.C.’s statement before allowing him to conduct his speech saying “ ‘I’m told that he is the smartest boy we’ve go out there in Greenwood. I’m told that he knows more big words than a pocket-sized dictionary’ ” (Ellison 2402). In this text the scholar believes that narrator constructed the text in such a way to reveal that to the in the novel, the narrator was invisible and he only became visible when someone else’s perception of him was revealed. Invisibility is again revealed in the section of the text where the narrator descr...

In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able of affirmative influence “on others”.
Leaders have those indispensable qualities of contagious self-confidence, unwarranted optimism, and incurable idealism that allow them to attract and mobilize others to undertake tasks these people never dreamed they could undertake. (To Lead or Not to Lead, Unit One 36)
