In his short story “Araby”, James Joyce emphasizes how love can cause an impact on lives, and in this case, it was for the worst. This young boy lives on a very quiet dead end, where noise is only heard during the dismissal time of the Catholic schoolboys. Not only is his neighborhood quiet, but also a priest died in his home. This makes the setting of the story dark and enclosed. They kept the room that the priest passed in closed at all times and super dark. Besides all that darkness that surrounds his home, the narrator found something interesting about where he lives; his neighbor. The narrator is madly in love with his neighbor. So in love with her that it’s creepy and kind of obsessive. He stalks her, not in a harming way I assume, but in a way that he has memorized her daily routines to know when he can see her. The narrator is pretty young, maybe 11 or 12 years old. One day, his lover approached him asking if he was going to Araby, which she couldn’t attend. He was so surprised and nervous about the fact that she spoke to him that he felt very anxious. His first thought was to impress her, so he offered to buy her something from Araby. He asked for permission and money to go from his uncle with time to make sure he goes to Araby. His uncle arrived home late that day to give him money, but time wasn’t stopping him from going. He arrived at Araby, and stated, “nearly all the stalls were closed and the greater part of the hall was in darkness”(89).
