Apert Syndrome (AKA Alport syndrome) is a genetic defect which can be inherited from a parent who has Apert or a fresh mutation. It falls under the broad classification of craniofacial/limb anomalies. Approximately 1 per 160,000 to 200,000 live births inherit it. Some symptoms that Apert sufferers have are various heart defects, ear infections, severe acne, increased incidence of eye injuries, and many more. The skull is prematurely fused and unable to grow normally, and the fingers and toes are fused together in varying degrees.
If your child gets Apert Syndrome they may have many physical defects as well as a few other problems such as slower learning, a cleft palate, vision problems, and problems with acne during puberty. I don’t think Apert Syndrome children die, expecially because you can pass Apert through genetics. A child with Apert Syndrome could live a pretty normal life.
The mutation which causes Apert Syndrome is found on chromosome number 10 called Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 2 (FGFR2). You have two copies of this gene, one from the mother, one from the father, which is composed of a string of about 2000 of the chemical building blocks that make up the genetic material called DNA. When Apert Syndrome occurs, just one particular building block in one of these two gene copies has been exchanged for another. The other gene is entirely normal. The one tiny change in FGFR2 results in the physical features of Apert Syndrome.
There is no link between anything the mother does or doesn’t do during her pregnancy to cause Apert. Doctors believe Apert Syndrome occurs when a gene mutates early in the pregnancy. The chances of having a second child with Apert are almost non-existent. However if one parent has Apert Syndrome there is a 50% chance that their child will also have Apert Syndrome. And studies have shown that Apert occurs more often to babies with older fathers.
In order for Huck to alienate himself from society and reveal the hypocrisy of society’s values. Twain uses the morals of the widow Douglas to insure Huck’s understanding of how contradicting these morals really are. “The Widow Douglas she took me for her son, and allowed she would sivilize me” (Twain 1). It’s shown from this quote that the widow Douglas most truly believed that her moral values where the correct and civilized morals. But it wasn’t only the the widow Douglas who taught Huck, her sister Mrs. Watson taught Huck the ideas of Christianity and read stories from the Bible to him as well. They both tried to insure that Huck turn in to the what they believed was the civilized and religiously correct human being.
Twenty years ago, twin births were radically lower, with twins being more frequent than other multiple births. With technology becoming more advanced and people who normally have problems becoming pregnant can use in vitro fertilization, people delaying motherhood, and survival rate increasing; having twin children is not as rare as it was thought to be in the past. Twin birth rates have increased 42% from 1980 to 1994 (Lytton, Singh, & Gallagher, 1995).
The fetus in utero may show signs of slow growth and organs may not develop correctly. After birth there can be physical defects evidenced by a smooth skin surface between upper lip and nose, the nose may be upturned, wide set eyes and an extremely thin upper lip. The head may be small in circumference and brain size, deformities of the joints, vision and hearing problems, heart defects and problems with bones and kidneys. There may be problems with the central nervous system and brain, including poor memory and judgement, learning disorders, delayed development, poor coordination and/or balance and hyperactivity or jitteriness, and mood swings. Children born with FAS may have difficulty is school, have poor social skills, have trouble adapting to change, lack impulse control, unable to stay on task and find it hard to plan or work towards a goal. The severity and negative effects range from subtle to serious, they are always
Addison’s disease is a disorder of the endocrine system. It is a hormonal disorder that can strike anyone, any gender at any age. Addison’s disease has also been called Adrenal Insufficiency (hypocortisolism) because the root of the disease is in the adrenal gland not producing enough of the hormone cortisol, or sometimes not enough of the hormone aldosterone to satisfy the body’s needs.
Throughout history women have been subject to sexual discrimination based on being the physically weaker gender and thus leading to society's negative view of women, there is no exception to the stigma cast on women in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. During the novel every character portraying a woman shows society's view on the role on women. The issue of sexism was never questioned by Mark Twain, which leads to another question--- how can such a powerful novel dealing with such a heated topic like racial prejudices remain totally neutral and bypass altogether sexual inequality?
In conclusion, we have seen Mark Twain has many different conflicting emotions when it comes to women in society back in 1876. He has described some women as naïve, weak, jealous and damsel in distress. In a very shameful degrading view of women as second class citizens and always dependent on men. Meanwhile, his views change completely, specially his views on older women. His reflection comes from kind hearted women who in his life acted as his mother, a guardian. He sees older women in his life as kind, generous and strong willed. A true reflection of how Mark Twain sees the many Women in Tom Sawyer's life, their role and functions in society.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is so much more than just a teen’s novel. Through Twain’s harsh language reflective of the times and location and the use of characters Twain showed how much the thinking of the majority of people in the Deep South fought progression. Mark Twain use of Miss Watson, pap, the duke and the king and others to show just how many thoughts and traditions where opposed to seeing “blacks” as equals. Through Jim, Twain showed that “blacks” are people / equals. And, in Huck, Twain showed how a logical person could progress, despite the views and morals of the Deep South, to see “blacks” equals. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn succeeded in exposing the Deep South for what it really was; highly prejudice and extremely reluctant to change.
“I had never realised what it means to destroy a healthy, conscious man.” After reading and understanding George Orwell’s feelings through his experiences in his essay “A Hanging.” We come to realize that George Orwell, a visitor from the European establishment, gets the opportunity to participate in the execution of a Hindu man. The author is degraded by what he has witnessed and experienced, and decides to share his feelings with the rest of the establishment through his writings.
Federalism is essentially the system of government in which a constitution divides power between a central government and regional governments (Lowi, A48). It, by definition, does not necessarily favor dividing the power in a particular way that would give more power to either the states or the federal government. When first formed, the American central government was very weak. Though the Constitution strengthened it, the states still had most of the power. Over time more and more power has been given to the United States’ federal government.
George Orwell’s “A Hanging”, set in Burma in the late 1920’s, tells his experience as a police officer witnessing a specific execution. Throughout his career on the police force, Orwell was an ardent retentionist, someone who supports capital punishment for certain crimes. However, this execution revealed to him the brutality of capital punishment, causing him to shift to abolitionism, the thought that capital punishment should be abolished. After quitting his job as a police officer, he wrote this story to show the heinous reality of capital punishment. Using the dialogue and mannerisms of the characters in this story, Orwell conveys his abolitionist message through the prisoner, the superintendent, the guards, and the dog.
George Orwell was the superintendent 's assistant at a prison in Burma, India. Through his work of “A Hanging”, he expresses the inhumanities of capital punishment. The story tells about a prisoner sentenced to death in a Burmese prison and captivates the actions and ideas that changed Orwell. His abolitionist message is driven due to his belief that life shouldn 't be cut short while it is still in full swing. He portrays the wrongness of execution through the actions and words of characters throughout the story, some of them being: the dog, guards, superintendent, Francis, and others.
Huck concocts the tale about the steamship cylinder exploding as an excuse for arriving in town later than expected. When asked if anyone was hurt, Huck replies "No 'm, killed a nigger" (279). Aunt Sally is relieved, replying “Well, it’s lucky; because sometimes people do get hurt” (279). To hear that no white people where hurt or killed, Aunt Sally is depicted as racist. She does not care that a black person died. In the beginning of the book, the reader could easily attribute the racist attitudes of the speaker to the culture and time, but after being introduced to Jim, the reader is unable to maintain that distance. Therefore, it is ironic to hear Huck make such a racist comment. As the reader sees through the tale, Huck is morally above the attitudes and ways of traditional Southern society. However, he is simply speaking in a way he thinks Aunt Sally would relate, in order to fit into the situation. Although Twain wrote the novel after slavery was abolished, he set the plot several decades earlier, when slavery was still a fact of life. However, by Twain’s time, racism had not necessarily disappeared in life in the South. In this light, reading Twain’s depiction of slavery presents an allegory of the condition of blacks in the United States even after the abolition of
In George Orwell’s short story “A Hanging”, there are many uses of rhetorical devices and uses of imagery in order to get an emotional response from the readers. These rhetorical devices all contribute to the overall theme of the short story. Orwell begins the short story with strong imagery to portray a dark, inhumane setting of the Burmese jail. Orwell writes about the jail yard, in which holds the prisoners, as “a row of sheds fronted with double bars, like small animal cages” to provide the reader with imagery and a feeling of empathy towards the prisoner. This imagery and use of the words “like small animal cages” are likely used to show a slight glimpse of how the prisoners are treated in captivity. The short story describes a Burmese prisoner who is about to be hung for a crime that is unknown to the reader. The reason that the reader may not be given knowledge of the crime the prisoner committed is likely because Orwell wanted the readers to give sympathy on the prisoner and view him like they would any other man. Orwell also use...
The influence of cognitive development are biological maturation, experiences with the physical and social environments, and equilibration. Equilibration is the balancing act between applying previous knowledge and changing behavior to account for new knowledge. Piagets’ stages of development require mastery of each stage before progressing onto the next, and although stages are fixed, the age at which one may be in a particular stage may
Piaget’s theory has been widely criticized for its over simplicity, and how rigid is it when it classifies certain abilities to certain age groups (Hank, 2014). Scientists have detected phases described by Piaget far way before Piaget theorized. Also, Piaget may have overestimated the cognitive ability of adolescents and adults, as formal operational cognition does not come as steady as Piaget envisioned. Nevertheless, Piaget has been extremely influential in developing educational policy and teaching practice for children (Mcleud, 2014), as he unraveled the image of children as active, critical thinkers.Piaget unwrapped new ways we look at how human cognition and human capacity for intelligence develops. We owe Piaget for a long list of masterful concepts that have enduring power and fascination (King,
