Core values are an important trait to everyone and has influence on how you
act and what you are like. Everyone has unique and different core values and what makes you, you. In the play, Antigone is influenced a lot by her core values. The play Antigone was the story of the daughter Antigone of Oedipus and Iocaste, which took place after they tragically died. Oedipus took his own eyes out so Iocatse killed herself and eventually Oedipus was abandoned and later died. The story also takes place after deaths of both brothers Eteocles and Polyneices killed one another in war. Eteocles and Polyneices were twin brothers who fought against one another for power of Thebes. The author of the play was Sophocles. He wrote the play Antigone in c. 441 BC and it takes place in the city of Thebes. The genre of the play is a tragedy. A tragedy in Greek theater is a story in which it ends sadly but all the violence is performed off the stage.
Antigone’s first core value is that

she believes in putting her family first. This core value influences her decision that leads to her attempting to bury her brother Polyneices who was just left out in the open by Creon.
The first quote that indicates this core values is "But I will bury him, and if I must die, I say that this crime is holy. I shall lie down with him in death, and I shall be as dear to him as he to me." This quote is said by Antigone and it shows that she will do whatever to bury Polyneices. This has an influence on her core value because when she is saying “if I must die” it is showing that she puts herself at risk for her family. This also influences her choice when it says this because she is saying that she will bury him even if she dies because she cares for him. The second quote is by Antigone and it is "But as for me, I will bury the brother I love." This is showing her core value that she loves her family and would do anything for her family. This is also influencing her decision because she is saying she loves Polyneices and will do what she believes is
right. The second core values Antigone possesses is that she believes in God. She chose who she should follow and she decides it’s better for her to follow God’s proclamation opposed to Creon’s made laws within the city. Following this is an influence on why she goes against Creon’s law. "It was not God's proclamation. That final Justice that rules the world makes no such laws. Your edict, King, was strong, but all your strength is weakness itself against the immortal laws of God." and it shows that she believes Creon's laws are discriminatory. This influences her core value in believing in God because she said “It was not God’s proclamation.” The quote influences her choice because she is saying Creon’s laws don’t follow God’s rules so she won’t follow Creon. The second quote that supports this is " I say that this crime is holy." which is saying that she doesn't agree with Creon. This quote has an influence on her decision because she doesn’t care about what Creon will do and she knows that God won’t do anything to her because she is following God’s proclamation. This also backs up her core value because she is saying “ (the)crime is holy.” in which she is following God. Antigone’s third core value is drying pride and honor is important. She talks about how she believes that Polyneices deserves pride and honor but Creon thinks he is a traitor. This core value influences Antigone into burying her brother so he can have his pride. The first quote by Antigone states"Creon buried our brother, Eteocles, with military honors, gave him a soldier's funeral, and it was right that he should, but Polyneices, who fought as bravely and died miserably." which shows that Polyneices deserves the same as Eteocles. This proves her core value because she is trying to influence Creon into giving her brother pride and honor with a burial which is what he deserves. This also influences Antigone because she tries to persuade Creon and when he denies she decides to try to bury him herself. The second quote she says "Nevertheless, there are honors due all the dead." which is basically exactly what the core value is, everyone deserves pride and honor so she is influenced by it. This influences her decision because she is saying how when she is sentenced to death she is saying how she wants to die with pride and honor, also she wants Polyneices to get his pride and honor by getting a proper burial. To conclude this essay throughout the story Antigone's core values changed the way Antigone acted. Antigone felt that Creon's made laws were prejudice against her belief in God's proclamation and her personal morals or core values. She put her family first the whole time, she attempted to bury her brother Polyneices from the point he was left out to the point where Antigone was caught. She decided to follow God’s proclamation instead of listening to the laws Creon made up because she felt as he was disrespecting God. Finally she drove her motive in order to give everyone who dies pride and honor. Nobody deserves to be disrespected. Antigone is a thoughtful and kind person because she puts her family way ahead of herself. If laws are prejudice against your beliefs you should follow your personal morals not the laws that are against you.
The play occurs in the same place and roughly the same time. Things that happened before the play or outside of the place, was told by a messenger or a character themself. The action was all centered around Antigone's actions. Her actions were the sole cause of everything that happened. Greek Tragedy Antigone does follow the Greek definition of tragedy.
In the play Antigone Sophocles presents the tragic consequence of a bloated ego. The play is set in Thebes, Greece before the Common Era. King Oedipus renounces his throne after discovering that he has unknowingly married his mother and inadvertently killed his father leaving the thrown to his wife’s brother, Creon (725). Oedipus’s two sons, Eteocles and Polyneices, die in war. The newly crowned King Creon, buries Eteocles with full honors for his support of Thebes and refuses the burial of Polyneices as punishment for fighting against Thebes. The play’s name sake and daughter of Oedipus, Antigone, is forced to go against the command of her uncle to bury her brother and is sentenced to imprisonment until death for defying his command. Haimon, Creon’s son, hears of his future bride’s sentence and attempts to reason with his father. However, blinded by rage and ego Creon will not listen to reason.
Antigone did the right thing by defileing Creon's strict orders on burying Polynices because the unalterable laws of the gods and our morals are higher than the blasphemous laws of man. Creon gave strict orders not to bury Polynices because he lead a rebellion, which turned to rout, in Thebes against Creon, their omnipotent king. Antigone could not bare to watch her brother become consumed by vultures' talons and dogs. Creon finds out that somebody buried Polynices' body and sent people out to get the person who preformed the burial. Antigone is guilty and although she is to be wed to Creon's son, Haemon. He sentences her to be put in a cave with food and water and let the gods decide what to do with her. He was warned by a blind profit not to do this, but he chooses to anyway, leaving him with a dead son, a dead wife, and self-imposed exile.
Antigone is a play written by Sophocles around 442 BC. Sophocles is known for his modern techniques. Sophocles’ work is known as the pinnacle of the Greek tragedy. Sophocles was very popular in his era. He served as treasurer of the Delian League and also General of Athenian army. Because Sophocles was widely known, his play were very popular. He received first prize at the drama festival when he was only twenty- eight. He wrote about one hundred and twenty- three plays for Aten's theater using tragedy and major conflicts (The Greek Theatre.) These techniques are used in the play, Antigone, to display the conflict between
Having already been through public disgrace, when her own father, Oedipus found out that he was to fulfill a prophecy; he would kill his father and marry his mother, and this caused Antigone to be full of resentment toward her city. Both of her brothers die in a battle and, Creon, the king of Thebes forbids the burial of one of her brothers, Polynices. This must have driven Antigone to follow her moral law. Considering the love she had for her family as well as her God, she felt that you react upon morals not upon the laws of man. That morale law was to honor her brother and give him the respectful and proper burial that he deserved just as her other brother was given. The love she had for her family was the only thing she had left to honor. Ismene, Antigone’s sister was more fearful of the king’s law then the way her heart was leading her. Her values were slightly distorted.
In the play Creon goes against the Gods by making it illegal to bury Polyneices, Antigone’s brother because he is deemed a traitor. The burying of a dead body is seen as a necessity by all of Greece as it is an unspoken law of the Gods. Antigone goes to bury her brother so his afterlife will be better. She does it in spite of the law that Creon has made. “It is the dead, not the living, who make the longest demands” (192) She tries to explain to her sister, Ismene, that they must bury Polyneices, but even that close relationship has trouble because of the law. Ismene is unwilling to suffer the consequences of the law, to save her brother’s soul “Forgive me but I am helpless: I must yield to those in authority” (192) Even the two sisters who have just lost both of their brothers have different views on the matter. One will not stray from the law and what is deemed right by their king, while the other will accept any punishment, even death just to do what she believes is right.
All true Greek tragedies were written using the same basic set of characteristics. One such characteristic was that all the characters were of nobility. This was to ensure that their fall from grace would be greater to those watching the play in action. Another characteristic of all Greek tragedies is that they were written in poetic form, as this was the style of writing at the time. There were also always almost constant references to the gods and to matters of fate. And it was the ever-present chorus who made a great deal of these references. One of the most important characteristics of the Greek tragedy was that the hero of the play always had a fatal flaw which proved not only to be their downfall but the cause of destruction of all those around them. Sophocles play “Antigone” is a wonderful example of the Greek tragedy because it encompasses all these characteristics.

Antigone, written by the Athenian Sophocles, is about a woman named Antigone who lives in a city named Thebes. The play’s plot is based on her attempt to successfully bury her brother Polynices, who perished in a battle with his brother that also assumed the role of king of Thebes. Both brothers lost their lives and the kingship was taken by Creon. Unfortunately, in the attempt to bury her brother, Antigone is caught by a sentry and taken before Creon where he sentences her to death, the set precedent for punishment deemed for the treasonous act of burying of any enemy of Thebes. Creon dismisses Antigone, then meets Haemon, Antigone’s fiancé.
Antigone, a play written by Sophocles, became a classic due to its timeless subject matter. In this play, the Greek dramatist reflected mainly on civil disobedience. Antigone believes in individual rights over state rights. Creon, however, strongly believes in putting state over religion. The play not only revolves on these two political and religious issues, but it also deals with the battle of the sexes.
Sophocles was able to incorporate Poetics in his tragedy of Antigone. We see two different characters, moved with two different purposes: one ethical and one pathetic. Through the complication and unraveling we see how Antigone embodies the fundamentals of what a Greek tragedy is.
Tragedy of Antigone The play “Antigone” by Sophocles displays many qualities that make it a great tragedy. A tragedy is defined as a dramatic or literary work in which the principal character engages in a morally significant struggle ending in ruin or profound disappointment. In creating his tragedy “Antigone”, Sophocles uses many techniques to create the feelings of fear and pity in his readers. This, in turn, creates an excellent tragedy.
Antigone is a play written by Sophocles that ended in tragedy. Antigone arrives to Thebes and learns that both of her brothers are dead. Creon, Antigone’s uncle who has inherited the throne, gives her brother Eteocles a proper burial, but has issued a royal edict banning the burial of Polyneices because he believes that Poly is a traitor. Even though breaking this law can result in death, Antigone buries her brother but is caught afterward. Obviously, Creon found out that it was her and locks her away in a prison with plans to execute her. Long story short, he refuses to obey the prophet, the chorus urges him not to, and he goes to release Antigone and see Polyneices burial but before he can do that he discovers that not only has Antigone killed herself, but his wife and Haemon as well. Their deaths leave Creon in distress and sorrow. Sophocles had some bland characters, and some dynamic characters, but a couple were worth talking about. Antigone was one of the most important dynamic characters, and Ismene, especially was one of the most important static characters.
“...never let some woman triumph over us. Better to fall from power, if fall we must, at the hands of a man —never be rated inferior to a woman, never.” This quote spoken by Creon, in Sophocles’ Greek tragedy Antigone, adequately represents the opinion on women during the time in which Antigone would have been alive. Women were viewed as lower than men and were expected to be docile and passive. They were expected to never object to a man’s words, no matter if those words were to be unfair or unjust. Despite this, Antigone refuses to follow one of the most fundamental teachings of her culture by burying her brother even though the king, Creon, explicitly forbids the action, since her brother is a traitor. She rebelliously does what she feels is right, which cannot be said for her sister, Ismene. Ismene represents what a woman of her time was viewed as: weak and submissive to men’s
She believes on what should be done that it should be done right relating to the bury of her brothers, Polyniece and Eteocles. Polyniece was left improperly to rest while Eteocles was buried properly. Antigone sparked fury in retaliation thus speaking to break the law to bury her brother when initiated to begin with her uncle. King of Thebes made it clear Polyniece shall not be buried as stated by Antigone, “No, no. Announce the fact if you don’t let everybody know, I’ll despise your silence even more”.
