Choices and Consequences
Antigone, written by the famous tragedian, Sophocles, is a Greek drama about a sister’s loyalty to her dead brother. Many of the characters such as Antigone, Creon, and Polyneices made decisions that they regretted in the end. The death of Polyneices sparked major conflict that carried and progressed through the play and led to many other tragedies including the death of Antigone, Haemon, and Eurydice.
Polyneices, son of Oedipus, was to help rule Thebes with his brother Eteocles after their father died. Eteocles, wanting complete rule over Thebes, did not give Polyneices his rightful time to the throne, so he left his homeland in search of an army. Later, he returned with soldiers from Argos to take back his glorious title as ruler of Thebes. During the fight, both Polyneices and Eteocles died at the hands of one another. Eteocles received a hero’s burial and was praised after his death. On the other hand, Polyneices was considered an enemy of Thebes, and he would not be buried, even though he was a son of a past king. Ismene, the sister of Antigone, thought it was wrong to defy the state. Ismene said, “You have a hot heart for chilling deeds” (Page 84). Antigone still wanted to proceed with her plans even without her sister’s approval. By herself, Antigone went to where her brother laid and began to sprinkle dust over the corpse. She was caught by King Creon’s guards, and sent back to the palace to receive punishment for her actions against Thebes. Her soon-to-be father in-law, Creon, was astonished to see her as the perpetrator. Antigone was sentenced to live in a cave until she starved to death.
