Good evening, Seattle! I was just looking out my window of my hotel before I came down here, and thought; wow, what a beautiful city. Unfortunately, the city has been poisoned with crime. Once in the Capitol, I plan to introduce bills to help change our prison system to help criminals get back to a normal life, instead of punishing them and making their lives more difficult than it already is.
Since the 1970s, we’ve had a “tough on crime” policy, which has lead to more problems started than solved. First off, 90% of prisoners will return to prison, often with a more serious crime. Most of these crimes happen within three years after being released. So, this clearly isn’t working. We need to come up with a different solution that’ll lower the amount of criminals going to prison and lower the amount that are returning. …show more content…

I remember joking around with friends when I suggested the idea of taking the people of Guam off the island and sending all our criminals there. I, of course, was joking and didn’t actually believe in this. But the concept stuck around with me, of isolating our criminals and putting them in their own society. And so, I came across a New York Times article that mentioned Anti-Prisons. These were neighborhoods that acted like normal areas but were only for criminals. They had education services, therapy services, and more that the criminals might need to help them get their life together.
The main argument against anti-prisons would be the financial cost, but the fact is prisons are already too expensive. The average prisoner costs 31,000 dollars per inmate in the United States. The anti-prisons, once built, would be able to sustain itself because it’d act like its own society. And, we wouldn’t even need to pay a ton of money to build
