Race to Incarcerate

In todays society the United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. This high incarceration rate is due to the growing phenomena known as mass incarceration. This phenomenon has led to massive increase of people being placed in prison and the amount of money being used for these prisons. The book, Race to Incarcerate by Marc Mauer, focuses on mass incarceration as our default social policy because of the weak welfare state in the U.S. In the book Mauer discusses the causes and the problems with this policy. Mass incarceration has caused the prison’s populations to increase dramatically. The reason for this increase in population is because of the sentencing policies that put a lot of men and women in prison for an unjust amount of time. The prison population has be caused by periods of high crime rates, by the medias assembly line approach to the production of news stories that bend the truth of the crimes, and by political figures preying on citizens fear. For example, this fear can be seen in “Richard Nixon’s famous campaign call for “law and order” spoke to those fears, hostilities, and racist underpinnings” (Mauer pg. 52). This causes law enforcement to focus on crimes that involve violent crimes/offenders. Such as, gang members, drive by shootings, drug dealers, and serial killers. Instead of our law agencies focusing their attention on the fundamental causes of crime. Such as, why these crimes are committed, the family, and preventive services. These agencies choose to fight crime by establishing a “War On Drugs” and with “Get Tough” sentencing policies. These policies include “three strikes laws, mandatory minimum sentences, and juvenile waives laws which allows kids to be trialed as adults. Many people ... ... middle of paper ... ...eant being tough on criminals” (video), but this method is obviously not working. All in all, the United States is at a crossroads and needs to make a decision. The decision is to stick to their current policy of mass incarceration or to choose to explore similar ideas of Marc Mauer. Mauer believes that our current system isn’t a good option for our society and needs to be changed as soon as possible. He wants our system to get to the underlying problems of why people commit crimes rather than just throwing them into prison for an extended period of time and then just throwing them out on the streets. Overall, I agree with Mauer’s agreement because he points out numerous flaws with our current system and gets me thinking of why our country has such a high incarceration rate compared to other countries? And what are these other countries doing that we are not!?
