The Role of Preferences in Shaping Individual Characters: Insights from Ayn Rand's "Anthem" Ayn Rand's dystopian novella "Anthem" depicts a society where individuality is suppressed, and the "Transgression of Preference" is considered the gravest of sins. This transgression entails any form of personal choice or preference that deviates from the collective norm, such as favoring one person over another or pursuing individual passions. The leaders in the society of "Anthem" view preferences as immoral because they threaten the uniformity and control essential to maintaining a collectivist state. Preferences shape individual character by fostering personal identity and growth, which starkly contrasts with real-life socialist and collectivist …show more content…
For instance, Equality 7-2521's preference for Liberty 5-3000 and his clandestine scientific experiments are seen as severe violations. His romantic affection for Liberty 5-3000 defies the society's mandate that personal relationships should not influence individual actions. Similarly, his passion for scientific discovery challenges the prescribed roles and knowledge allotted by the state. The society in "Anthem" suppresses individual preferences to maintain absolute control and uniformity. By eradicating personal choice, the state ensures that all citizens conform to the collective's needs, thereby eliminating the risk of deviance or rebellion. The prohibition of preferences is a tool to uphold an extreme form of collectivism where personal desires and identities are inferior to the …show more content…
In "Anthem," Equality 7-2521's journey is marked by his distinct preferences, leading to his self-discovery and eventual rebellion. His affinity for learning and discovery, embodied in his secret experiments, differentiates him from his peers and fuels his quest for knowledge. This journey illustrates how preferences are not merely superficial choices, but are fundamental to shaping one's character and aspirations. In real life, preferences significantly influence our identities. Consider the example of Albert Einstein, whose preference for theoretical physics over conventional studies led to groundbreaking scientific contributions. His personal inclinations and persistent curiosity exemplify how preferences can shape an individual's path and impact the world. On a personal level, my preference for literature and humanities in general over other subjects has profoundly influenced my academic choices and personal development, demonstrating the unique role that preferences play in forming individual
In the beginning of Anthem, Equality 7-2521 commits a sin, a sin that everyone knows they are not to perform. Equality 7-2521 broke both rules with a sentence consisting of seven words in his diary. "It is a sin to write this," were his first thoughts. This was the very start of Equality 7-2521's break through development. Luckily for him, he was not caught committing this sin. Equality 7-2521 and International 4-8818 found an underground tunnel. This is where Equality 7-2521 spends a lot of his time thinking for himself, and finding ways to bring his society from everything being "we," to people being able to relate to an "I," like "The Unmentionable Times" unspeakable word.
In the novella Anthem, by Ayn Rand, expressing individuality is a sin. Ayn Rand creates the main character, Equality 7-2521, to show that a Rational society cannot keep someone from being who they are and having moral judgements without becoming an Irrational Society itself. This is further explained in her short essay, “How Does One Lead a Rational Life in an Irrational Society?”. Equality 7-2521 would second Ayn Rand’s advice on moral judgement being a big responsibility and a determining factor of moral character. He would also agree that there is government brainwashing, due to his personal experience in life. Equality is different from the other men in his world, and because of this he has lived most of his life concealing his emotions,

However, Equality eventually, tries to distant himself from his society. He is shaped to be a follower, but eventually emerges in to an individual and a leader. “For I know what happiness is possible to me on Earth. And my happiness needs no higher aim to vindicate it” (Rand 95). In this part of the novella, Equality, the narrator, is aware that he can find his own happiness and he should show it once it is found. Throughout the novella, Anthem written by Ayn Rand, Equality is trying to find himself in a society full of equals. As he discovers the tunnel, Equality creates a light bulb in which he wants to flaunt upon the people of his society. Subsequently, when it is rejected by the Council, he hides in the forest from those who see him as a betrayer. Equality tries to find himself in a collectivist society that he knows he does not belong in, in which he evolves. The author believes in objectivism,
The Society of Anthem is a striking instance of a dystopian society in which daily life is dominated by fear. The society is headed by a group of elders, who attempt to destroy the concept of individuality and promote the idea of collectivism. The society controls all aspects of life including roles and profession, emotions, mating and the freedom of choice. Equality 7-2521 undergoes a transformation that is contrary to the principles of Anthem’s society. In Anthem by Ayn Rand, Prometheus (formerly Equality 7-2521) should not feel guilty when he writes “why the best in me had been my sins and transgressions; and why I had never felt guilt in my sins.” because what he learned about himself over the course of the story.
In a year that remains undefined beneath a small city lit only by candles, a young man is working. He works without the council to guide him and without his brothers beside him. He works for his own purposes, for his own desires, for the dreams that were born in his own steady heart and bright mind. In his society, this is the greatest transgression. To stand alone is to stand groping in the dark, and to act alone is to be shamed by one’s own selfishness. The elegantly simple society that Ayn Rand has created in the novel Anthem has erased all segregation and discrimination by making every man one and the same with those around him; only Equality 7-2521 defies the norm with his ruthless
Ayn Rand, a contentious woman, the new favorite author to multiple people’s list. People who have read her magnificent book, Anthem, understand how exquisite and meaningful her words are. Books like Anthem are worth reading because it gives the reader more knowledge about controversial topics and it takes the reader to experience new places and new adventures. Equality, the main character, is a symbol. He represents many people today, living in countries like his society. Equality has to find his true identity first before helping the others. People are not allowed to believe in individualism, they should not have a identity of their own. Each person has a monotone routine to follow every single day of their lives. Each step a person takes
Ayn Rand’s Anthem is a politically satirical novel is set in a future society that is so highly collectivized that the word “I” has been banned. The world is governed by various councils who believe that man’s sole reason for existence is to enforce the Great Truth “that all men are one and that there is no will save the will of all men together” (Rand, 20). Any indication of an individual’s independent spirit is swiftly and brutally put down, with the transgressors being punished with severe prison sentences or even death.
The dystopia depicted in Anthem could quite easily be considered Ayn Rand’s commentary on society. It puts into perspective the downfalls of societal trends and putting others above oneself. The novella itself is a satire of Collectivism, which can be seen in examples of Communism. Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism includes ideas of immutable facts, rationalist mentality, self-prioritization, and a capitalist society (ARI, n.d.). Her ideas are shown in a variety of aspects throughout the novella. Oppression felt due to the collective mentality is the most prominent of the ideas shown. Another aspect that is important to note is Equality 7-2521’s natural tendency to struggle against the restrictions set upon
Anthem is a novella written by Ayn Rand, in which Equality 7-2521, the protagonist, struggles for self-identification living in a collectivist society. Equality believes that individuality is an eminent aspect of one’s life because individuality defines and outlines who man is. He endures all the hardships in his life living with people who support collectivism, and who reject his ideas. For example, when Equality 7-2521 invents and exhibits the light bulb, the World Council rejects it and tells him that it is selfish to work on something alone instead of working with his brothers. The World Council threatens to destroy the light bulb but Equality does not let that happen and rebels, so he is forced into exile from his society.
Equality 7-2521 struggles in the Home of the Students because he is too intelligent and deft at absorbing information. The ability to think quickly and easily was looked down upon by the teachers and the government. Equality notes, “It was not that the learning was too hard for us. It was that that the learning was too easy. This is a great sin, to be born with a head which is too quick. It is not good to be different from our brothers, but it is evil to be superior to them. The teachers told us so…” (21). The students are taught that being intelligent is evil and that they cannot be superior in knowledge than the officials in the government. Equality’s intelligence leads to his job as a Street Sweeper because the government wants to suppress radical ideas by assigning him to a socially lower job and authoritative status. As literary critic Tore Boeckmann states about Anthem, “[Equality] belong[s] at the pinnacle of any rational social hierarchy, yet [he is] thrown (at least temporarily) to the very bottom” (135). Overall, the public citizens in Anthem are extremely selfless and lack a sense of self-worth because the government wants them to put the good of the community above the
People in every Society are placed in categories according to gender, religion, race, and age from which one of these categories includes social class. In the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand, people are placed in social classes according to the government's liking and instead of race, age, gender etc their social class depends on the job they are given by the government. This was done to treat everyone equally in order to keep peace in the society. However, sometimes equality can cause rebellion and this idea is portrayed through the protagonist of the novel, Equality 7-2521. Ever since the unmentionable times had caused destruction to the society of Anthem, the government had taken away all the free will and individuality of its people.
