Prometheus writes: “The secrets of this earth are not for all men to see, but only for those who will seek them.” (Chapter 3) Why does he think that the secrets of this earth are not for all men to see? If he thinks this, why does he decide to show his glass box to the World Council of Scholars? How do these issues relate to the theme of the novel? Rand’s novella, Anthem depicts a dystopian society where an individual struggles against the society’s core beliefs. The individual named Prometheus stated “The secrets of this earth are not for all men to see, but only for those who will seek them.” Meaning knowledge is for the men who search for it; if the individual doesn’t search for (secrets of the earth) knowledge, he won’t appreciate the great beauty of it. Knowledge is not automatically expressed in the world; it is like the pieces of a puzzle, where an individual decides whether or not to put the pieces together. Only those who figure out the puzzle, find their answers. Rand depicts a society, where the main character’s thirst for knowledge push him to painfully break free of his chains of confinement by society and to finally reach his highest level of understanding reality. A general theme of Anthem is the act of knowledge confinement. Prometheus showed his glass box to the World Council because he believed that he had found his knowledge and wanted to show it off to the world. The World Council served as his stepping stone on his quest to find knowledge and to answer his questions. Solidarity 8-1164 stated “ Many men in the Homes of the Scholars have had strange new ideas in the past, but when the majority of their brother Scholars voted against them, they abandoned their ideas, as all men must." What Prometheus later fo... ... middle of paper ... ... his ideas for a much improved future. He describes how his two young sons, his beautiful wife, and his community will create around his philosophy of being an individual and possessing freedom. Throughout the novella, Prometheus painfully breaks his chains of confinement, to find his quest for knowledge. With many painful experiences, he finds out that individuality can never be fully controlled, because freedom is always with him. Rand depicts a society where collectivism is the core belief and anyone opposing it, will be a martyr. But it will be one individual who will rise from the depths of despair and fight for his individualality; and eventually find his purpose in life. Works Cited Rand, Any. Anthem.
