The Mystery of the Nazca Lines
One of the world’s unknown mysteries are the Nazca Lines in Peru just over 200 miles south east of Lima near the modern day town of Nazca. From the time the civilization of the Nazca people thrived, which is sometime between 1 AD to 700—the geoglyphs have withstood now almost 2000 years. (“Lines and Geoglyphs of Nasca and Pampas De Jumana”). The Nazca lines are known as Geoglyphs which are drawings on terrain which exemplify an image but usually “Negative.” These lines are strips

The entire set of the Nazca lines are one big puzzle—over 1500 different figures of geometric patterns. However the history and purpose of the reason these lines were etched into the Nazca desert is murky. Many theories range as to why these figures have been etched, however nothing is written in stone. Most evidence suggests that the Nazca Lines were etched due to Astronomical Numeric Scientific purposes as warranted, by the Astronomical Theory, the Astronomical Calendar Theory, and an Ancient Geomatria of Numbers phenomenon. The astronomical theory suggests that the lines etched has some correlation to the stars that filled the sky during that time. According to this theory the lines showed the direction of the rising of important stars and planetary events like sun solstices. Aside from that theory another one that many researches affirm is that the lines were used as an astronomical calendar this theory is understood that the drawings are map of the sky the lines were all used to study the movements of the Sun and the Moon. Many Scientists also agree that the purpose of these lines was for a geometric number system. Over all there …show more content…
As mentioned as a prerequisite, located in a remote dessert in the south of Peru, are giant etchings of various insects and animals which are made by enormous lines that is not viewable by land. The lines stretch across 450 sq km and have overhauled the landscape for 2000 years. As the foundation, the Nazcan Geography and climate plays a role in in the line’s consideration as a mysterious phenomenon. The Nazca lines are etched in the desert between the Ingenio and the Nazca river valleys. The desert sits on a high plateau that sits between the town of Nazca and Palpa on the pampa which is a flat area on the south of Peru Socos, El Ingenio and others in the province of Nazca, is 400 Km. (“Lines and Geoglyphs of Nasca and Pampas De Jumana.”). Additionally, the climate was very dry and unique for its ability to preserve markings which is a combination due to the climate and the flat stone studded ground which prevented high ground wind. This eases the circumstances of the lines and partly explains as to why the lines have been preserved for over 2000 years, and have not eroded away by natural forces. (Dearden “Nazca Lines.”) The climate is one of the driest on earth, receiving an average of only 20 minutes of rain per year. The very light colored sub soil beneath the crust
The article hypothesized that since the entrance of the cave had some fluvial action, there would no archaeological material that would have been preserved. The authors talked about the two natural contexts that is used by prehistoric mud glyph artists: alluvial mud bank and thin clay veneers. The authors claim that they understand the used and the preservations of the alluvia...
The Aztec Calendar stone has become one Mexico’s national symbols. After decades of Latin American Art being degraded, underappreciated, forgotten, and abused, it has become one of Mexico’s most national treasures. After years of research from the Codex Mendoza, the Calendar, and documents by the Spanish conquistadors, it has gradually become clear as to how the Aztecs truly lived and how art played such a huge role in their society. It has not only given researchers insight to the Aztec culture and religion and has also given influence to modern and the mainstream media today such as fashion and graphic design.
Written by Horace Miner, this essay of the people group Nacirema is an interesting look at their everyday functions. The tribe Miner describes is seemingly primal and uncivilized, and yet somewhat familiar. The entire account of these mysterious people describes unusual and strange behaviors and activities. The brief overview on the Nacirema is graphic from Miner’s point of view. When the meaning of the story becomes clear, the purpose for writing it becomes either humor or disdain.

One of the farthest places from Michigan that I have lived for over a month is Venezuela. Though I was born in Winfield, Illinois, I grew up and lived in Venezuela for most of my life. My parents were missionaries in Puerto Ordaz, located in the northeast, and Caracas, the capital, for fifteen years (from 1988-2003). My grandparents, now retired, were missionaries in Venezuela for forty years. In 2004, when I was eleven years old, I went to my first American school here in Grand Rapids. After a year of raising support, my family moved to Italy. I repeated fifth grade, and finished middle school at an International school in Mestre, Italy. After that, for high school I attended a boarding school in southern Germany. Right now, my parents and younger brothers are at home in Italy. Even though Italy is the country that is farther away from Michigan, I decided to write about five significant geological features in Venezuela, and the geologic history and current geology.

The low land setting of the Maya Civilization was varied, depended upon a rain cycle, not always reliable. The land mass occupies a significant part of modern Mexico, comprising of the eastern parts, spreading to all northwestern high kinds. The weather varied due to?
The coastal plain is an arid, elongated stretch of land extending the entire length of the country and varying in wild from about 65 to 160 km. (about 40 to 100 mi) it is a northern extension of the Tacoma Desert of Chile. The plain has few adequate harbors. Most of the desert is so dry that only10 of the 52 rivers draining the Andean slopes to the Pacific Ocean have sufficient volume to maintain the flow across the desert and reach the coast. However, the coast is the economic center of Peru. Most of the Nation’s leading commercial and export crops grow in the 40 oases of the region.
The Lascaux Cave in Dordogne, France is important to scientists because it explains the civilization’s culture and history in painting and the people’s artistic talents and use of paints. Further, the quality and bright paintings show animals, bison, deer, bears [Fig.1-4] and large mammoth animals. The cave and the paintings are significant because there are generations of paintings amongst one another. For instance [Fig.5] shows a horse that was painted over of the bull and then some smaller horses that were painted over that. Therefore, the paintings were done over a long period of time with many different painters and represents different time periods; archeologists saw that the people lived in a cave beside this one, so this cave could have been more spiritual and if there was many animals painted in the cave the people would believe that there would be enough food for them in the forests (Bolman, n.d.) It also supports animism, which is the belief that natural objects, natural phenomena, and the universe itself possess souls (Animism, 2014). The paintings reflect the development...
How can something be beautiful and ugly at the same time? Marie Arana, in the literary journalism piece, “In La Rinconada, Peru, Searching For Beauty in Ugliness,” explores the idea that there can be beauty in ugliness. Arana supports her claim by providing factual information, personal observations, and descriptive details. The author’s purpose is to point out to the readers that there can be beauty in the ugliness of this remote mining community that has no running water or sanitation. First, Arana provides factual information about the country of Peru and the mining community of La Rinconada for the reader.
In a Long Count calendar date there are five numbers which are separated by four periods (for example, 13.0.0.0.0). 13.0.0.0.0 is thought to have been the Mayan’s theory as to the world’s creation date. The Mayans used hieroglyphs, such as those in the image,
By using The Human Web and several additional sources, this essay will explain more about the Nasca civilization and, by exploring their religious and cultural practices, shed light on the impact it had on the Andean web. Situating the Nasca Civilization - The Nasca culture emerged around 100 B.C.E. in the Ica and Nasca Valley of South Coastal Peru. It was then that most other influential Andean civilizations formed as well, of which the Moche in the North Coast region and Lima in the Central Coast
The Nazca Lines are ancient geolyphs lines made by Nazca people that had an ancient prehistoric culture. They are located in the Nazca Desert in Southern Peru. There are many interesting things about these lines and their incredible structure.
The idea of conduit metaphor can be found in the article "Body, Brain, and Communication: An interview with George Lakeoff" by "Iain A. Boal". In this article the person interviewed is George Lakeoff a linguistics professor at University of California (Berkeley). Boal in this article discusses what the conduit metaphor really means and what significance it holds for common people. In this article, other aspect of conduit metaphor that is discussed includes communication on the World Wide Web. Conduit metaphor is a metaphor that describes communication between two mediums. Conduit metaphor proposes that ideas are objects and are transferred via a channel. Although it has its own limitations, it is very important in our society, today.
