Animal Farm was written by George Orwell as a disparaging remark on Stalinist governance. The book is written in the form of a fairy tale. Animal Farm was first published in 1945.
Chapter 1:
After his day’s toil, when Mr. Jones, the proprietor of the Manor Farm, locked the hen-houses and went to have his night’s slumber, all the animals assembled near the big burn to hold a meeting. Earlier, in the day, it was whispered that old Major had a dream and wanted to convey it to the other animals of the farm. Old Major, the twelve-year old pig, was held in high esteem by all animals and so they were convinced to hear his words at night. It was a huge congregation comprising all animals of the farm. Off late, Mr. Jones took to drinking a lot and he paid less attention towards the animals. On Midsummer’s Eve, the animals spend the day without any food. By the evening they were too hungry. One of the cows broke open the door of the store-shed and the animals “began to help themselves from the bins”. Suddenly, the animals found Mr. Jones and his four men lashing them. The animals couldn’t bear this torture so they started kicking the tormentors from all sides. The animals were triumphant in defeating the humans and succeeded in driving them out from the farm to the main road. They took a resolution to preserve the farmhouse as a museum. On the next day, the animals began their work of hay harvest. The words “Manor Farm” that was painted out on the top bar gate was replaced by the words “Animal Farm”. With their past lessons, the pigs were successful in “reducing the principles of Animalism to Seven commandments”. These were the laws that animals would follow and it was inscribed on the wall. Their labor was rewarded as the harvest was much more than they had expected. The tools that were used by humans for harvesting could not be used by the animals. The pigs administered the works and the horses namely Boxer and Clover, tramped the field. All the animals worked “at turning the hay and gathering it” and it took two days for them to finish the harvest. Throughout the summer, the work of the farm went on. All the animals were happy because everyone has much more to eat and they ate what they produced peacefully. Although there were problems regarding thrashing the corn, the horses and the pigs did that with their muscles. All the animals worked according to their capacity. On Sundays, all the animals gather to listen to the debate between Snowball and Napoleon. Snowball reduced the Seven Commandments to a single maxim: “Four legs good, two legs bad.” Snowball formed small animal committees but they all failed. Snowball succeeded in educating the animals according to their intelligences. Napoleon emphasized on the education of the young ones and he took away the puppies of Jessie and Bluebell apparently for that
