From childhood to adulthood, two of the most experienced mental health disorder are depression and anxiety. Animal-assisted therapy has been very effective in patients that suffer from a major depressive disorder, also known as depression. This disorder is very common and interferes with a person’s daily life and activities. Feelings of sadness overtake a person’s daily life and lead to the uninterest of regular routines and activities. The traditional way of dealing with depression is giving patients antidepressants. However, it is known that previous treatments such as antidepressant drugs haven’t been effective towards patients. Hoffmann (2009) did a study in which he and his colleagues confirmed that Animal-assisted therapy is a healthy …show more content…
Same results were found in a similar study by Sandra B. Barker and Kathryn S. Dawson (1998). Barker and Dawson (1998) did a pre and post treatment crossover design to compare changes in anxiety ratings among 230 patients after two 30 minutes sessions. The two sessions consisted of a single animal-assisted therapy group session and the other one consisted of single therapeutic recreation group session. It was found that “The reduction in anxiety scores for patients with psychotic disorders was twice as great after animal-assisted therapy” (Barker, Dawson, 1998, pg 4). Animal-assisted therapy creates a positive interaction between humans, especially between a patient and it’s therapist. It’s one of the safest ways to increase interaction, and it provides a sense of safety and comfort that it is not found in the common and known “traditional” therapies (Arnold 1995). The presence of a dog or any animal can surely make a difference in therapy sessions. While the anxiety ratings decreased after just thirty minutes of being exposed to a dog’s presence, more exposure to therapy sessions with dogs present can help maintain the anxiety of patients low and decrease depressive

Several studies have examined the effects of dog ownership on people's physical and mental health. Dog ownership produces considerable health benefit and provides social support that encourages dog owners to walk (Cutt et al.2007 ). Pet owners appear to have lower systolic blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels(Anderson et al 1992). Pet owners with serious mental illness living in the community demonstrate higher social community integration(Zimalog and Krupa 2009). Socially excluded participants who performed in the presence of a dog report higher mental well-being compared with socially excluded participants who did not work in the presence of a dog (Nilüfer et al 2012). Although there is evidence suggesting that dog ownership can improve people's physical and mental health, there is little research documenting the psychological and behavioral effects of dog-assisted therapy, especially on elderly patients with dementia, who have dif...

Most people are familiar with service dogs and have seen them in action. Animal-assisted therapy is similar service animals in that an animal-human healing partnership is being created. However, the difference is that therapy pets are typically used to treat a mental disability whereas people with physical disabilities use service dogs to help them in many ways. Therapy animals are used in a wide variety of places, such as, hospitals, prisons, nursing homes, therapy sessions, mental healthcare facilities, and even in people’s homes. These amazing animals are used on a wide variety of different disorders, but they are utilized mostly by people suffering from depression, anxiety, and PTSD. For people with these mental health disorders, everything in live can be difficult and challenging, however with the help of animal-assisted therapy, their mood, motivation, and life can dramatically improve. Anyone who hears about these brave, loving animals soon falls in love with them. From a medical standpoint, there have been many successful studies and the support for animal-assisted therapy still continues to grow in doctors and therapists across the nation.
In the field of therapy, there are numerous of therapy available out there for different type of individuals and situations as well. There is one type of therapy that usually contains people and animal, it is animal-assisted therapy is a therapeutic approach that brings animals and individuals with physical and/or emotional needs together to perform the therapy. Animal-assisted therapy tend to be focused on individuals either children or elderly for them to be able to connect with the animal thus feeling comfortable talking with the therapist. Pet therapy works for all ages, whether sick or not (Lanchnit, 2011). Although, this paper, most of the focus is on animal-assisted therapy towards children using dogs.
Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), which can be provided in a group or individual settings, is designed to promote improvement in a human’s physical, social, emotional, or cognitive function. An article by Chitic, Rusu, and Szamoskozi (2012) provides an analysis in order to determine the value of AAT. Both dogs and horses that were trained for AAT were examined and studied to determine their effectiveness in treating patients with psychological disorders. The results showed that both therapy dogs and horses were valuable aids to the therapeutic process. The analysis suggests that proper training and repeated sessions were necessary for proper treatment of patients. In addition, certain disorders may benefit more than others in regards to AAT. For example, a child with ADHD may not benefit from a therapy dog’s presence, for it may worsen the hyperactive symptoms. On the other hand, a patient with depression may benefit greatly from the same animal (Chitic, Rusu, Szamoskozi, 2012). These findings are a perfect starting point to answering the research question: Do patients who engage in AAT display a betterment in their overall emotional well-being, as well as show improvement in their interpersonal interactions...
You wake up in the hospital, look around, and find a doctor hovering nearby declaring that you have just suffered through a heart attack; affirming that if not for your dog, you would have died. You remember back to earlier that day: sitting on the couch, feeling a little off, hearing your dog barking, sensing him nudging you, going to the phone to call the ambulance, and having your dog by your side until you were safe inside the aluminum walls of the emergency vehicle. Although it sounds abnormal that a dog would be the one to save someone’s life, situations similar to the one above are not uncommon. Dogs and other household pets have been shown to be able to detect medical emergencies, including heart attacks and seizures, in their owners.
Mental illness affects many people all over the world, but what about man’s best friend? In her Ted Talk “Depressed Dogs, Cats with OCD - What Animal Madness Means to Us Humans”, Laurel Baitman explores the mental illnesses in animals, focusing on the similarities between humans and animals. Baitman, who has a Ph.D. in History of Science from MIT, discovered that animals have symptoms of mental illnesses, similar to humans, by looking at the behavior of her dog, Oliver. I agree with Baitman’s claim that animals have mental illnesses, as well as humans. Understanding these signs can help humans understand themselves and become closer to animals.

With the rise of Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) for psychiatric patients, the need for training, credentials, and laws are essential. The training for Emotional Support Animals is not required, as it is for Service Dogs, but, they can be registered and allowed in establishments like Service Dogs are. It is believed that more then twenty million families in the United States have at least one individual with a disability. With this number on the rise, training, credentials, and laws may need to be examined for the safety of the public and fellow animals.
Pets can be therapeutic for children who don’t have much emotional support at home, as they can become a sense of comfort to a child in this type of situation. Goleman quotes Dr. Yolande Michaels, a psychologist in Venice, California, who said that pets helped the children who were disregarded at home feel calm and prevented them from feeling alone. Barbara Wood, a clinical social worker at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio conducted a study for children who needed therapy for a medical condition (Goleman). Dr. Wood split up the children involved in the study into two groups. Dogs were introduced to play with one half of the children during their therapy sessions.
People with dogs are less likely to suffer from depression and anxiety disorders. Dogs are great social support for people with limited social interaction, such as someone who is incredibly busy with work or other activities. Many people talk to their dogs in a similar fashion to the way they talk to themselves. Daily struggles and frustrations are often vented to pets, which can serve as a release for these emotions. Having a confidant that not only provides unconditional love and positive energy, but serves as a frustration vent is incredibly valuable, and makes the moments of vulnerability easy.
Animal experimentation is contentious issue in today’s society that, whether it continue or should stop. Many animals such as monkey undergo painful suffering or even death as a result of scientific research for the sake of humans’ health. Among the animals monkeys are the main victims of the scientists’ experiments because of their human-like characteristics and physical process to humans. Monkeys’ similarities allow the scientists to test effectiveness of the new discovered drugs, food additives, and chemical and even cosmetics products. Although, such medical experimentations had helped scientists to produce vaccines, and medicines that are necessary for elimination of some deceases, but the test had negative medical effect on monkeys.

The thought is simple, however the answer is a little more complex, there are three main types of animal cruelty. The three reasons are as follows: unintentional, intentional, and cruel intentions. I will discuss each one in more detail.
