George Orwell explores the positives and negatives of hard work and dedication in his book, “Animal Farm.” The hardest working character in this book, none other than Boxer, has become weaker and weaker from hard work and dedication, and without thinking, he fails to realize he needs to stop working. . Hard workers without a plan were not always meant to succeed. They might have succeeded in their younger years, but once you become of the older age, you become not able to do the things you would have done years back. Hard workers like Boxer soon die due to overwork and over the top dedication rather than retiring from all the hardships that could be handled by the other animals on the farm. Through “I will work harder,” Orwell suggests hard work and dedication, without intelligence, leads to failure.
Boxer works hard by not allowing his hurt hoof to get in the way of the rebuilding of the windmill. He always devotes time into work and never gives up on something until it is finished. Boxer doesn’t care what obstacles are in the way of his work, he will climb over that mountain and get whatever job he has to do done. He may have split his hoof, but he was treated with antibiotics and continued to work each day. He never cared how much agony he was in, he just kept on working. He was not intelligent in doing so because he never actually healed his hoof. His hard work without intelligence would lead to a devastating downfall. “At such times his lips were seen to form the words, I will work harder, he had no voice left” (Page 111). Boxer is a non-intelligent, overworked animal according to Orwell’s description of him. When Boxer “had no voice left” shows an animal that has been overworked and abused. ...tion, without intelligence, can lead to failure. Boxer’s motto helps illustrate that working hard and putting in dedication without planning or intelligence will lead to failure on some occasions. People who dedicate all of their time into hard work without a plan will always fail because working hard on the wrong things does not guarantee success. Working hard with intelligence and a plan will always guarantee success. Take for example when Twitter first began. The engineers worked hard to develop the software; however they did not plan properly for the increase in web traffic causing the site to be unavailable quite a bit. If they worked hard and smart, they would have planned for the increase and not had so many early problems. In the case of Boxer and other over workers, working hard and putting in dedication without thinking will lead to a permanent end.
