As I descend the stairs from the stage, trepidation saturates my body. During my performance, I retained my focus on Angelo's table. Patsy danced in her seat, while Angelo sat back with his arm stretched along the back of the sofa, wearing a smile on his lips as he watched me. But John, his angry glare remained on his bottle of beer most of the time. When he did glance my way, the fury that spewed forth from his eyes was terrifying. “You were fantastic,” cries Patsy, blocking my path back to the table. Her wide eyes match her wide smile. “Thank you.” She clasps my hands within hers. “Can we dance?” Without waiting for a response, she tugs on my hands, drawing me into the sea of dancers. With the back of my hand, I wipe away the tears before rising to my feet. It's strange for someone to be knocking on the office door. I open it and peer through the crack to find Angelo waiting on the other side. Of course, I allow him access. It's his office after all, though I turn away from him once he's inside. “Eva, what's wrong?” What's wrong? Is he serious? We were moments away from cheating on his girlfriend. His tender hand rests upon my shoulder, to which I turn to face him with my head remaining low, though I gaze at him through my lashes, displaying the anguish on my face. “We can't-do this.” He retracts his hand to glide his fingers through his hair. “Okay,” he says before turning away from me. Mr Thompson was right, he isn't what he seems. He was fully prepared to cheat on Alice, with her best friend, and doesn't care one bit. “I'm sorry,” he says, “I'm not sure what happened, but if this makes you uncomfortable, I'll respect that.” “Angelo,” I whisper, “I'm sorry, too, and wish things were different.” A heavy sigh escapes his lips. “I told you before, you can talk to me, Angel.” We remain frozen, locked within one and others gaze, only this time, the hummingbird departs, leaving my chest to tear wide open. I wish to rip out my heart, tear out my eyes, and maybe then I can have Angelo as a friend
