The angelic Evangeline we meet in Uncle Tom’s Cabin, by Harriet Beecher-Stowe, is a character to be remembered. Although she is a character that most feel is only used to foreshadow Tom’s death, she contributes a sense of hope that is not shown much of in the book. There are two main events that really do show how the character was meant to be portrayed in the book by Stowe. Many believe that slavery was a work of Satan himself, so Evangeline attempting to free all of them is kind of like her trying to undo the work of the devil. Another bible verse that really relates to the character of Evangeline is Luke 4:18, which states, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed.” This quote really summarizes Evangeline as a person and her real reason in being included in the book. In her last dying moments, Evangeline cuts her hair and distributes it amongst the slaves, even though her body isn’t her own, but rather an odd manifestation of God’s grace. She then begins to tell the slaves that she will be waiting for them in Heaven, which shows her preaching gospel to the slaves. Evangeline was one to always preach the word of the lord, something her father had a hard time believing in. Although he did not entirely believe in the things Evangeline preached, he could still see how import they were to her. The final point of comparison is the last line of the verse, “He has sent Me to proclaim
