Ancient India’s Success Starting around 3000 BC the civilization known as the Indus River Valley, or Harappan civilization, began establishing along the Indus River. The Indus civilization was made up of multiple villages, cities, and tribes and located in modern-day Pakistan and northwest Asia. With over 1,500 sites of civilization, historians estimate this civilization was the largest of all other ancient civilizations (Britton). The two largest and important cities within the Indus River Valley, was Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro. Archaeologists began excavating ancient India in the 1920’s, which is later than most ancient civilizations making much of it’s history remain a mystery. It caused them to get along because they had common beliefs, values, and ways of life making them unite. Ancient India is home to the oldest of major religions, Hinduism. Once Hinduism was fully organized around 1500 BC it was soon to be followed by many. Akhter, the author of “Achievements of Ancient India” stated that “before Hinduism, Buddhism was the most popular religion in this region.” Buddhism is identical to Hinduism but removing the the concept of worldly desires. Buddhism flourished for nearly 500 years until the Gupta dynasty arose and began to favor Hinduism over Buddhism (Smitha). Shortly after, Hinduism gained more popularity and became the dominant religion and still is today. Both of these religions have the component of dharma, or being morally good. If you have good dharma during your lifetime, it leads to reincarnation which people strive for. Since the people worked towards this it meant, their community was extremely peaceful. Having a peaceful community is one major element to what made their success because everyone got along and helped each other to make the civilization prosper. Mr. Donn states in his article that, “Hinduism is followed by 98% of the people in India and is the third largest religion in the world.” Even in typical daily activities, Hindus go to their religion for guidance. Their society was organized, peaceful, and state-of-the-art. The layout of the buildings and roads were very strategic and well thought out. Houses were raised to prevent floods and were made of baked brick to assure safety and protection. Their housing was also very urbanized and sanitary. Each house contained a drainage system that carried the dirty water and waste away from the homes. In the article Achievements Of Ancient India, by Ishrat Akhter, “the drainage systems even had easy access areas for maintenance.” Cleanliness was a very important aspect to them but no other ancient civilization had this kind of technology. A drainage system would have been a system other communities desired. These advanced living conditions is what made India stand out among the other civilizations, making them the most progressive. Additionally, ancient India is responsible for many breakthrough discoveries. They created the number zero, started cultivating cotton, used medicine, made surgical discoveries, and even created games like chess (Pal). The people were constantly thinking of ways to improve their society and made important breakthroughs that we still use today. Lastly, establishing on the Indus was not unintentional, it was setting up for a society with good crops and items for trade.
