Houses were raised to prevent floods and were made of baked brick to assure safety and protection. Their housing was also very urbanized and sanitary. Each house contained a drainage system that carried the dirty water and waste away from the homes. Hinduism was the first major religion to develop in South Asia. Along with it, came a strict caste system and clear social hierarchy. Hinduism stressed the importance of karma and people purifying their lives over many reincarnations to achieve holy perfection.
