Ancient Greece was the most highly developed civilization. It was the birthplace
of the first Western civilization. It was located in the continent of Europe. Also, Greece
is peninsula and it is on a land near the Mediterranean Sea. I believe it is the most
advanced ancient civilization because the Ancient Greeks introduced some very
significant contributions to the world such as certain things in philosophy, art and
architecture, and math and science. Additionally, the ancient Greek had organized
social factors.
The ancient Greek had an organized and advanced way of living. Greece in the
archaic period (ancient Greece) was made up from city-states which were called Polis.
The two most important city-states were Athens and Sparta. As I have learned from
ancientgreece.com, the society was primarily broken up among free people and slaves.
The slaves were owned by the free people and were used as servants and laborers. As
the society evolved, the free men were separated between Citizens and Metics.
Citizens were born with Athenian parents and were the more powerful group. They
could take part in the government of Polis. However, Metics were of foreign birth and
had to pay taxes and sometimes serve in the army. The social classes only applied to
men since women took their statuses from their husbands and were not allowed to take
part in public life. The ancient Greeks also had a very sophisticated government. The
majority of Greek states were governed by rich landowners, called aristocrats c. 800
BC. Furthermore, there were three main forms of government in ancient Greece. The
website Greece.mrdonn.org discusses about the three types. Monarchy is “rule by a
king. One city-state whose government...

was focused on the internal trade and technological advancements while agriculture,
trade, and slavery made the foundation for Greece’s.” Although, ancient Greece was
more influential on the modern world and ancient China was more influential on Asia
only.
In conclusion, the most advanced civilization was ancient Greece. The ancient
Greek made significant contributions to the modern world such as philosophy, art
and architecture, and math and science. There are many arguments by others who
believe that ancient Greece was not influential to India or that ancient China was more
advanced, however ancient Greece helped shape the modern world. The Greeks had a
very highly developed way of living. Also, they had a sophisticated government and they
were the creators of Democracy.
According to the Marvin Perry, “ slaves was practiced in ancient times, in many lands, and among most people.”(Perry, 112) Especially in ancient Roman, when Roman armies expand to other countries and areas successfully, they captured people during the battle and send back to Rome to be sold to the wealthy Romans as their slaves. During the last centuries of Republic and the early centuries of the imperial age, the Roman war brought back to a huge amount of slaves as their spoils of the wars. Slaves was considered legally to be a piece of property without their own freedom. In ancient Roman, people called their slaves as the “Speaking Tools” . Slaves did not treat as a human beings with legal citizen rights. They sold as products to the market and valued by their demographic characteristics including age, gender, personal skills, ethnic, manner, appearance, and personality. The lives of slaves conspicuously harsh by their tough works and cruel tortures from their inconsidered masters. The more brutal oppression of masters, the more intense of slave revolt, and finally to cause the massive revolt in Roman.
As you can see, Greeks and Romans were very brilliant civilizations. Their superior strategy, intelligent leaders, and crafty weapons lead them into the dawn of a new age. And basically lead us to our modern civilization.
It abolished all slavery, but slaves still faced many challenges. To help alleviate some of their problems, the Congress created a temporary agency that provided food, clothing, and medical care to newly free slaves. This was known as the Freedmen’s Bureau. Slaves were made citizens of the United State which gave them constitutional and legal rights. Slaves were also given “equal protection” and education, right to vote, legalize their marriages, and could hold a position in a political office. However, it was still difficult for slaves to find a place in society because they were not given an alternative way to earn a living. They had to start of fresh with no homes or no money. The only jobs they could get were sharecropping and tenant farming. In both, slaves would have to work out in the fields and give the crops back to their owners, so they were basically tied back to
The slave proprietors would regard the slaves as though they were not human, and many slaves
These slaves were not treated as a person but as an impersonal asset although they did have their rights. These were dismal rights but they were important for the slaves well-being. The rights were as follows: the slave was allowed his personal items (like money etc.), he could not be killed without a good reason.
The Greeks believed that the earth was formed before any of the gods appeared. The gods, as the Greeks knew them, all originated with Father Heaven, and Mother Earth. Father Heaven was known as Uranus, and Mother Earth, as Gaea. Uranus and Gaea raised many children. Amoung them were the Cyclopes, the Titans, and the Hecatoncheires, or the
Colonist started to import slaves from South America in hopes that they would live longer and be more manageable to control. The slaves that were imported were trained past their first year of slavery, so that they would not die as fast. The first imported slaves came to America in the early 17th century. When they received the slaves they found out some of them were baptized, and were under the Christian religion. So they could not be treat as slaves under the religion so they were turned into indentured servants. There were very few vague laws on slavery, but it was always a permanent servitude. At first slaves had limited right, and were aloud to own land, after their period of slavery was over. They were allowed to marry and have children. The slaves kids that were born while they were enslaved were not consider to be slaves, but to be free under the law.
If, gentlemen of the jury, you will turn over in your minds the question what is the difference between being a slave and being a free man, you will find that the biggest difference is that the body of a slave is made responsible for all his misdeeds, whereas corporal punishment is the last penalty to inflict on a free man.
Slavery is defined as a person being owned by someone, a state of bondage, servitude, or work performed under harsh conditions for little or no pay. Both continental African slavery and external commercial slavery deprived people of freedom. Continental slavery focused on adding people to a group to be productive members of the society and for other reasons beside monetary benefits. External slavery consisted of obtaining slaves for monetary means while inducing physical, emotional as well as psychological detriment to ensure compliance (Reader, 1997). With the emergence of European colonies, a system of trade with American Indians was created ...
#1 A pattern that was common among the ancient civilizations of China, Rome, Greece, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and India was that most of them started as a dictatorship, a monarchy, or a dynasty. Eventually, most of them changed to a democracy, republic, or class system. Almost all of the civilizations had one or two great leaders. For example, Egypt had King Tut, Greece had Alexander the Great, and Rome had Julius Caesar. China has had many different leaders through the years.
Ancient Egypt was a very important time in our time period. They had their own way of life. Egyptians had their own writing, burials, government, religion, cooking, and games. They were educated people with many talents. They were good with their hands and brains. Ancient Egyptians were a magnificent race of people.
The code of Hammurabi was one of the most important documents in Babylon history. It was adopted from many Sumerian customs that had been around for a while before the Babylonians. Though many of the Laws were adopted from Sumeria they were published by Hammurabi and thus known as the code of Hammurabi. This code had four main parts to it. They were: Civil Laws, Commercial Laws, Penal Laws, and the Law of procedures.
“The Greeks molded the mind of Western Civilization, if not the body and the culture” (PowerPoint #6). The Greeks had a very powerful impact on the entire world, making them a huge influence to Western culture. The Greeks showed their power over the world by their great intellect. Through their accomplishments in art, architecture, government, philosophy, education, and science they helped shape Western Civilization. They built strong and intricate buildings, allowing others to see throughout history the plan of the architecture used. The Greek government was one of the first to have a Democracy. Their ac...
Slavery was the practice of taking a human being and making them do the work of another by force. This was practiced through out the ancient world and especially in Rome and Greece. Slaves were nothing more than just property to the ancient peoples. They didn't have the rights of citizens nor were they able to do what they want in most cases. Slaves had many tasks that they had to do, many of which included taking care of the masters house and kids, cooking and cleaning that house, herding the cattle for the farming families, being guards for some prisons, fighting for entertainment of the masses, and more common was sexual activities with the slaves.
Slavery has been a part of human practices for centuries and dates back to the world’s ancient civilizations. In order for us to recognize modern day slavery we must take a look and understand slavery in the American south before the 1860’s, also known as antebellum slavery. Bouvier’s Law Dictionary defines a slave as, “a man who is by law deprived of his liberty for life, and becomes the property of another” (B.J.R, pg. 479). In the period of antebellum slavery, African Americans were enslaved on small farms, large plantations, in cities and towns, homes, out on fields, industries and transportation. By law, slaves were the perso...
