Analyzing Sherman Alexie's Poem 'Evolution'

Analysis #1- The poem title was Evolution, written by Sherman Alexie in 1992. “Evolution” means the gradual development of something, especially from a simple to a more complex form, which is the same idea presented in this poem. Some of the literary devices employed were irony, paradox, symbol, personification and pun. The poem begins with an epigraph. “Buffalo Bills opens a pawn shop on the reservation right across the border from the liquor store and he stays open 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week” (1-3). This epigraph symbolizes about a person named William Frederick Cody who was a soldier and hunter. He arrives at the reservation and opened a pawnshop and started collecting unredeemed items from Indians in exchange for money. This poem also had some poetic devices like irony, …show more content…

The following quote is a great example of irony because William Cody brought old items from Indians for less and then converts the place to a museum and fooled Indian in making them believe that stuff in really new, which is irony in this case. The poem was pretty easy to understand but few lines had a double meaning. The poet wrote, “Buffalo Bill takes everything the Indians have to offer, keeps it all cataloged and filled in a storage room” (6-8). The following quote was a great example of a pun because reading suggests that he is taking pictures and keeping the stuff in storage to save it, but instead he was actually planning to make a museum by purchasing the old Indian stuff for fewer prices. In conclusion, the Buffalo Bill, an old soldier, and hunter who just pretending to be nice to get Indians ancestors things and then make money from them by putting them in the museum so that they can come and look at their own belongings.
