In her speech at the National American Woman Suffrage Association, Florence Kelley highlights the truth about child labor. Throughout her speech, Kelley uses many strategies to persuade her audience. First, Kelley uses facts to convince her audience that she is credible. Second, she uses facts to show her audience how serious she is about the topic. Lastly, she uses guilt to appeal to the reader’s emotions. When using facts, Kelley appeals to ethos. she gives her readers reason to believe she is trustworthy. For example, in the text she states, “ We have, in this country, 2 million children under the age of 16 years who are earning their bread. They vary in age from six and seven years… in more enlightened states.”
By starting her speech off with getting straight to her point, the audience becomes interested and becomes passionate about her argument. Also, by using facts, Kelley appeals to logos. She gives readers factual information which makes them feel included. For example, in the speech she states, "In Alabama the law provides that a child under 16 years of age shall not work… any other state.” The reader also becomes more passionate when they feel just as educated on the topic as the speaker. Finally, The speaker appeals to pathos by using guilt. When doing so, the speaker is evoking sympathy from the reader. For example, in the text the reader states, "Tonight while we sleep, several thousand… us to buy.” This allows the reader to feel guilty and become more passionate about the speaker's argument.
Helen Keller, against all odds, became a mouthpiece for many causes in the early to mid-twentieth century. She advocated for causes such as building institutions for the blind, schools for the deaf, women’s suffrage and pacifism. When America was in the most desperate of times, her voice stood out. Helen Keller spoke at Carnegie Hall in New York raising her voice in protest of America’s decision to join the World War. The purpose of this paper will analyze the devices and methods Keller used in her speech to create a good ethos, pathos, and logos.
Angelina Grimke and Sojourner Truth were both prominent American civil rights activists of the 19th century who focused on the abolition of slavery and women’s rights issues, respectively. While both of these women challenged the societal beliefs of the United States at the time regarding these civil rights issues, the rhetorical strategies used by each of these women to not only illustrate their respective arguments but also to raise social awareness of these issues was approached in very different fashions. In the “Declaration of Conscience,” Margaret Chase Smith addresses the American public and the United States Senate during a time of political unrest. Communist accusations and a “national feeling of fear” has brought upon this speech. Even with an upcoming election, the Republican Party decides a freshman woman senator would speak to the public, an uncommon practice at the time . In this paper, I will argue that Margaret Chase Smith’s “Declaration of Conscience” proves her credibility as a woman politician. Smith uses a masculine tone, simple diction, and repetition to prove to Americans and the Senate that she is a strong political figure.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton, along with many other women, packed into a convention on a hot July day to all fight for a common cause; their rights. At the first Women’s Rights convention, Stanton gave a heroic speech that motivated the fight for the cause to be even stronger. Through Stanton’s appliances of rhetorical devices such as emotional, logical, and ethical appeals, she was able to her win her point, change the opinions of many, and persuade people to follow her.
She was now getting into the field of labor agitation and would change America forever. In 1903, she organized a march in which children, mutilated from their jobs, marched the streets to the home of Theodore Roosevelt in order to draw attention to the grueling and wicked child labor laws. “Federal laws against child labor would not come for decades, but for two months that summer, Mother Jones, with her street theater and speeches, made the issue front-page news.” This shows how after several attempts from previous progressive reformers, Jones was the only one whose protests were powerful and effective enough to open people’s eyes to the issues. A reason that Jones had become so effective was that of her exploration and observations. She frequently visited factories to observe the cruel working conditions in which people worked in and interviewed workers to get a feel for them and understand the brutality of the work. She stated herself that because of rough conditions, “The brain is so crushed as to be incapable of thinking, and one who mingles with these people soon discovers that their minds like their bodies are wrecked. Loss of sleep and loss of rest gives rise to abnormal appetites, indigestion, shrinkage of statue, bent backs and aching hearts.” By examining workplaces, she was able to gather empathy and sympathy for the workers who were suffering.
The plot of the book, Speak is that Melinda Sordino, a freshman at Merryweather High went to an end of the summer party with some of her friends. Things take a turn for the worst when a senior named Andy Evans sexually assaults her at the party without her friends knowing about it. Melinda is frightened, afraid, and does not know what to do so she calls 911 busting the party, and causing her friends and everyone at that school to hate her, even if they don’t know her.

Overall, Hillary Rodham Clinton gave a convincing speech on women’s rights at the U.N. World Conference by using the key rhetorical techniques ethos, pathos, logos, and anaphora’s. Angela Davis, a renowned political and civil rights activist, was invited in 2012 to Pitzer College to give the commencement speech to the graduating class. Her speech touched on important points in her life as well as many of the values she fought for and believe in. I have never heard her speak before watching this commencement address, and my initial thoughts when hearing her speech was that she was old. Her speech was slow and at first a little boring. There are many types of artifacts that can be analyzed which result in a better understanding of the artifact itself. A common type of artifact that is analyzed are speeches because they can be about various topics and given in different situations. With a rhetorical analysis, one can gain a better understating of why the speech was written and if there is an underlying meaning behind the message. During the annual Relay For Life Leadership Summit, Ann Marie Morse gave a keynote speech about how cancer has touched her life. A rhetorical analysis of Ann Marie’s speech would be beneficial to those who were in attendance at the summit because they would understand why she was chosen to give a speech and what her underlying message that she is trying to present. During this rhetorical analysis, I plan to first describe in depth the speech that Ann Marie Morse gave during the annual 2012 Relay For Life Leadership Summit. Knowledge is power. An example of awareness producing activism can be seen in the war against Iraq. When one learns of an unjust war being carried out they, now knowing the circumstances, will act as they will to stop the injustices occurring. The same can be seen in women’s activism. When people become educated on the topic of women’s rights, they come to understand the circumstances and can act accordingly to help stop the problems from carrying on. Anne-Marie O’Connor’s article about the maquiladora women in Mexico and their terrible working conditions brought awareness about, as well as Sam Dylan’s article on the mistreatment of these women.
