In Act One of Candide, there is four scenes, the first scene is entitled Westphalia, when the scene is first introduced the music has a happy sound, similar to that of circus music and as the introduction goes on the music goes from an allegro tempo to a peaceful and dream like piano sound and grave tempo. As the music continues to come in the lights continue to brighten on stage as well as if the music and lights are tied together. As the cast came out they performed the opening song during this song they harmonized really well. In Scene One the audience is introduced to the Baron and Baroness of Westphalia, Baron Thunder-ton-Tronck and Baroness; the Baron is a baritone, his voice is low but not low enough to be a bass; the Baroness is a mezzo soprano, she has the ability to hit high notes but they are not as high as those that can be hit by a soprano. Later in Scene One, the characters Candide, Cunegonde the daughter of the Baron, Maximilian the son of the Baron, and the tutor Pangloss performed “The Best of All Possible Worlds” during this song, like the opening the audience witnesses a variety of vocal ranges. Candide is a tenor; his voice is in the middle of the vocal scale it is not extremely high and not extremely low. Cunegonde is a soprano; her voice is definitely at the beginning of the vocal scale, she hit extremely high notes and held them very well. Maximilian is a baritone; his vocal range is a little lower than Candide’s. The tutor Pangloss is also a tenor, like Candide his voice is in the middle of the vocal scale as well. During “The Best of All Possible Worlds” there is a round, which was very well executed by the actors and actress.

Overall I truly enjoyed myself at the opera. It gave me a new perception on plays and operas, before I went I thought it would be cut and dry and I would be ready to leave as soon as I got there, but it was the complete opposite of that. I laughed, I wanted to cry (but I didn’t), and I felt the energy from the stage. I did recommend this opera to some of my friends and I will recommend it to more people because it was really, really good. All of the music was well executed and performed beautifully. I can see myself checking out more operas and plays here at USC, they are really good way to spend an evening enjoying classical music and a good show.
The play Sisters, by Wendy Lill, is set in 20th century Nova Scotia at an Indian Residential School. The play focuses on a hopeful 17-year-old farm girl named Mary who was dating Louis at the time. Along with the present Mary who is currently in interrogation with, the duty counsel, Stein. She has been accused of torching down the Residential School, the place where she worked for fifteen years. There are various factors contributing to the impulsive reasoning behind Sister Mary’s act of burning down the Residential School such as, the actual truth to why she committed the sin, the contrast relationships with others that reflected upon her actions, and the overall punishment she should receive.
The musical score proficiently provides the viewers with a sense of what is happening in the scene which could not be communicated through text. Dramatic music is played for Creon’s entrance; this immediately communicates to us that he is a man of great importance and power. When Antigone enters after being arrested, the music is dynamic and tense. This conveys the seriousness and desperate atmosphere of the scene. The score is also a representation of the varying moods of the characters. An example of this is when Antigone is anxiously trying to appeal her sentence. The music makes the audience drawn is drawn to feel sympathy and pity her when she is preaching her views on death. For instance, a solemn melody is played when Haemon’s dead corpse is brought to King Creon. Creon grieves by himself as he is overcome with devastation caused by his foolish actions; his emotions are intensified by the sorrowful and sombre background music. The music is able to complement the play, while accentuating the more significant events.
The experiences that we face in life vary from person to person and one of the greatest differences occur between men and women. In Voltaire 's novel Candide a great deal of the experiences that each of the characters face is unique to them, but the experiences of the women differ greatly to those of the men. The way the two sexes handled those experiences also varied and reflected a satirical view of the times in which Voltaire lived. The differences in events between the men and women can be seen in a few key points that are seen throughout the Novel.
Candide is outlined to be excessively trustworthy in everything he is disclosed to, and thus, childlike. After Candide is kicked out of his castle, he is approached by two soldiers who ask him if he “has great affection for the King of Bulgarians”, and when Candide replies that he doesn't know of the King, the two soldiers invite Candid to “drink to [ the king’s] health”.As Candide joins them and drinks to a king he has never known “with all his heart”, he demonstrates lack of independence for himself. The soldiers then take Candide to join their army and he goes willfully, contented to be a involved in Bulgarian army. Candide (1991), which is another version of "Voltaire" by French writer Francois-Marie Arouet, is a short but diverse story that tells of a young man's journey for love and the hardships he faces all the while keeping a very strong, positive and philosophical outlook on life. The book starts in an unknown year, hinted sometime around the Renaissance, with a young man named Candide. Candide loves the princess of a Baron and is banished from the land because of it. Wanting so much to be with his love, he starts his travels to find some way that he can be with her. Right from the start Candide falls into trouble. From being forced to join an army, to seeing and loosing his love again, to great riches and to the lowest pit of poor Candide is able to overcome adversary and conquer the odds. In this amazing journey he finds that every event in the world has a reason, and whether there are positive or negative moments you have to live them.
When looking at the women in Voltaire’s “Candide”, a reader will see that this lines up exactly to the characters actions and traits. Trying to define the females of “Candide” is important because we can begin to understand the motives and reasoning behind each decision and thought that is made. These women understand that they have no real voice or power to change the world. The only way they can make an impact on the world is through the body of a man. These women may not have had the most successful or happy life, but they made the best life they could despite the hardships they had to
One major theme that is present throughout the whole book is love. Love is what drives Candide through his journey and helps him over the obstacles that he endures. His love for Cunégonde is unconditional and his mind is set on getting to her no matter what problems he may encounter. The second half of Candide takes place in the Utopian society of Eldorado. Eldorado is used to symbolize the ability that is associated with humans to create a non-violent society. It is Voltaire’s perception of an ideal society. In Candide Voltaire discusses the exploitation of the female race in the eighteenth century through the women in the novel. Cunegonde, Paquette, and the Old Woman suffer through rape and sexual exploitation regardless of wealth or political connections. These characters possess very little complexity or importance in Candide. With his characterization of Cunegonde, Paquette, and the Old Woman Voltaire satirizes gender roles and highlights the impotence of women in the 1800s.
...xcited to have this experience. Part of the drama of the concert at first is felt when the musicians come in and sit down and begin tuning up their instruments. I would not be able to comment on the performance of the orchestra. During the performance, I seen the audience were moving with the music, but I felt like that everyone seems knows more music than what I learned throughout this semester. After I went home and did some of the research on these music I finally understand why these people like to attend the orchestra concerto, it was because that every piece of music has a history behind it. The Los Angeles audience seemed to me to be people who know music and who will listen to something new in a respectful way. All the same, when the more familiar sounds of the last piece were heard, I could feel a little sense of relaxation and fun coming into the room.
In Susan Glaspell’s play Trifles Mr. Wright’s murder is never solved because the two women in the story unite against of the arrogance of men to hide evidence that would prove Mrs. Wright as the murderer. The play Trifles is about the death of farmer Mr. Wright and how the town sheriff and attorney try to find evidence that his wife Mrs. Wright killed him. As the play progresses the men’s wives who had come along were discovering important pieces of evidence that prove the men’s theory but chose to hide from them to illustrate the point that their ideas should have been valued and not something to be trifled. The very irony of the play comes from its title trifles and is defined as something that isn’t very important or has no relevance to the situation that it is presented to. In this play the irony of the title comes from the fact that the men find the women’s opinions on the case trifling even though the women solve the crime which ends up being the downfall of the men as they would have been able to prosecute Mrs. Wright if they had listened which made the women’s opinions not trifling. Glaspell was born in an age where women were still considered the property of men and they had no real value in society in the eyes of men except for procreation and motherhood. This attitude towards women was what inspired Glaspell to write the play Trifles and to illustrate the point that women’s attitudes should be just as valued as men’s and to let women have a sense of fulfillment in life and break the shackles that were holding them only as obedient housewives. In the novel Candide written by Voltaire there are several symbols throughout the story. One of those symbolic figures that seems to stand out in the story is the character Candide, a gullible and innocent boy who experiences many hardships after being vanished from the castle of the baron von Thunder-ten-tronckh. Candide seems to be a representation of people's innocence and how they tend to lose it throughout their lifetime as they witness and experience new things in the world and grow wary of the consequences that every different situation may hold. For example, Voltaire mentions in the beginning of the story that “nature had bestowed upon [Candide] the gentlest of dispositions. His countenance expressed his soul” which shows to the reader that Candide is kind and innocent at the beginning and that he has not the slightest intentions of interfering with another persons life in a negative manner (3). However, later on in the story after Candide has killed Don Issachar and the Grand Inquisitor, Candide justifies his murderous behavior to Cunegonde by saying that “when you are in love, and jealous, and have been flogged by the inquisition, there is no knowing what you may do” which demonstrates that the gentle and kind Candide has turned into a murderer as a result of his previous life experiences which in turn provides an excellent example of how people lose their innocence and turn to violence overtime (22).
Tick tock. Tick tock. Everyone is anxious. Tick tock. Tick tock. Three twenty-nine in the afternoon….one minute before tryouts start. The seconds pass slowly. The clock suddenly strikes three thirty. Time for tryouts to start for the last time for six of us. Mrs. Atkins yells at us to practice the dance, cheer, and chant in front of the judges so that they can see what it is supposed to look like. After we finished that she tells us to go outside and wait. Before tryouts start she sits us down in a circle. Mrs. Atkins said that we all made the team, but we still had to try out to determine who would be the lucky fourteen girls to make Varsity and who would be the seven girls to make Junior Varsity. She continued to talk and all I could think about was how my heart felt like it was about to pound out of my chest, and what I would do if I did not make Varsity my senior year. As I focused my attention back into Mrs. Atkins talking, she gave us our numbers and our partner for
Nervous: tending to be anxious; highly strung. The word nervous couldn’t even begin to describe how I felt going into my freshman year cheerleading tryouts. It was late March in 2011 as I was leaving middle school and entering high school. I had cheered since I was little all through elementary school and all through middle school, so when the time had come for high school tryouts I was a nervous wreck. Not only were tryouts a full week, but they also consisted of learning a dance, two side-line cheers, the school fight song and a “big” cheer. I can remember tryouts being absolutely miserable for me, because they fell on Easter Break. That year for Easter I was flying to visit my dad in San Diego, but I was leaving on the second day of tryouts.
The classic tale of Cinderella is well known for the fight of overcoming great obstacles despite great odds. However, there are always a few ill-hearted people who go out of their way to cease any competition that they might face, as seen with Cinderella’s step-sisters. Samuel Jackson says is his distinguished quote, “The hunger of imagination…lures us to…the phantoms of hope,” to help develop a more defined view of a fairytale. The story of Cinderella fully embodies the ideals of a true fairytale by encompassing magic, hope, and struggle between good and evil throughout the duration of the plot.
In 2011, I tried out for competitive fall cheer at Chancellor High school,as a result I made Varsity. I freshman on a Varsity Competitive cheer team. I was very special, but I didn 't know what I was getting into. When I first became a varsity cheer team teammate, my coach decided that I be an alternate. Despite the fact I was enjoying my journey of an alternate, It didn 't last long before she actually put me on the mat. Just like all the other new cheerleaders, I believed that cheering was just prancing around school and yelling chants about my school 's football team. For that reason, I was misguided; but not completely incorrect because that was also a part of cheer. It was called sideline cheer. Competitive cheer had been just a little different. Since It was
