Today’s Mariachi music originated in the Mexican in the town of Cocula in the state of Jalisco, during the 1800s. A Mariachi group consists of at least two violins, two trumpets, one Spanish guitar, one vihuela, and one guitarrón. However it can have multiple of these instruments. Mariachi uses contrasting sounds, such as the deep guitarrón against the crisp vihuela, and the sweet violin against the brilliant trumpet. Mariachi used for birthdays, especially quinceañeras, weddings, church services, Mother’s Day, large parties, and funerals. It can also be used to serenade someone's love interest; it wouldn't be unusual to awoken by Mariachi music in order to win someone's heart. The most common songs played at wedding are Amaneci en tus Brazos,
"The guitar is shaped like a woman, with a neck you hold and a body you hug against yourself."(Santana 114). Carlos Santana, a very accomplished fourth generation Latino musician, is a very romantic man with his music. He was born on July 20, 1947 in Autlan Mexico, the middle of seven children (biography.com). His parents are Josefina Barragan and Jose Santana. His father was an accomplished professional violinist and as a child Carlos learned to play the instrument from his father, though he did not enjoy the tones it created. Eventually he picked up the electric guitar, for which he developed an ardent passion. How has Carlos Santana's music been a positive impact in Latino culture? Although Carlos Santana's music was heavily influenced by drugs and alcohol, he has been a positive influence on Latino culture because of his musical innovation, resilience in adversity, and world-wide philanthropy.
Selena, “Le Reina de Tejano”, was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson. She was the youngest of three children of Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Marcela, his wife. At a young age, Abraham had a strong passion for music that he still has. During the 1950s and 1960s, him and his friends made a group called “Los Dinos” and played at nightclubs and restaurants. Even though his passion for music, he gave it up when he got married and earned a job at Dow Chemical as a shipping clerk.
As I expected, mariachi music was indeed fast paced and an upbeat tone. What I did not realize was that some mariachi music does not have to start off quick it can be slow or sad. All in all, I found this experience to be both fun and
It was music of country people that celebrated the joys, the struggles, and the triumphs of the Mexican people. The Mariachi was a version of Spanish theatrical orchestra consisting of violins (usually two), guitars, also called “guitarron”, and a harp. The word “Mariachi” derives from the French word “wedding” or “marriage”. Music and dance were important elements of Spanish theatrical productions, enormously popular throughout the Spanish-speaking world during the colonial period. It was from this group that several of the most distinctive regional ensembles of Mexico developed, including the Mariachi. The musical form and ensemble of the Mariachi developed differently from region to region throughout time. The ensemble that is familiar today began to take shape in the nineteenth century in the state of Jalisco. In other areas such as Veracruz and Huasteca, the northeast region of the country, the ensemble evolved differently. By the end of the nineteenth century, the instrumentation consisted of the cocula or the vihuela, two violins, the guitarron, and two
During the late 19th century and early 20th century, a form of Mexican folk music called the corrido gained popularity along the Mexico-Texan border (Saldívar). Growing from the Spanish romance tradition, the corrido is a border ballad “that arose chronicling the history of border conflicts and its effects on Mexican-Mexican culture” (Saldívar). A sort of “oral folk history,” the corrido was studied intensely by Américo Paredes, who then constructed his masterpiece, George Washington Gomez, around the “context and theme” of the corrido (Mendoza 146). But the novel is not a traditional corrido, in which the legendary hero defends his people and dies for his honor. Instead, through its plot, characterization, and rhetorical devices, George Washington Gomez is an anti-corrido.
For me it all started out with Selena. I remember a boy in my middle school class dedicating me "Como La Flor" at one of our school dances in seventh grade. After that Tejano just sort of stuck in my head and all I ever thought of the song was that I had rejected that boy. Selena was quite a Tejana star at the time, and I was shocked with her murder two years later. She was a five star role model for Mexican-Americans to relate to and appreciate. Her songs live on in the Tejano world, as does her sprit and love for the music.
Cultural value orientations are the, “basic and core beliefs of a culture; that have to deal with one’s relationship with one another and the world” (McCarty & Hattwick, 1992). All cultures may encounter challenges with the media and society of how their beliefs and values are represented. There are several factors that resemble how cultural values influence a culture, more specifically the Hispanic culture in Yuma, AZ. Some of those factors are, the expression of their individual and collective identity through communication, cultures identity expressed though the mass media channels, examples of the value orientations that influence the groups communications behaviors, and one of the major events that challenged Hispanics identities.
Child rearing and family structure within the Hispanic culture is noticeably different than what is present in the mainstream Western culture of today. One apparent difference is in gender roles. There exists a vastly different expectation in Hispanic culture for males and females. The male is considered to be the independent breadwinner, and the head of the household. Accordingly, the female role is one of submission and provider of childcare. In contrast, it is more than acceptable in Western culture for a female to maintain a non-traditional role. Hispanic culture additionally differs from Western culture in the traditional makeup of the family. Within Hispanic culture the extended family plays a huge role
At the most southern part of the Mexican Republicans the "trova" a style of a song that was popular in the early twentieth century. It began in Cuba but is similar in many different Latin american countries. For “trova” its where you have your guitar and you serenade someone almost, it was very popular but in in the late 19th century.
The musical style of this piece is West Indian soca (sokah) music. The performance is by Black Stalin and the title is “Black man Feeling to Party.” The social setting of the performance is a concert setting. This particular function of this musical style is for entertainment, parties, and dance. The ensemble set up for the performance is arranged with the band behind the performer, (as known as the artist) who is in the front and center of the stage. The four backup singers are also behind the artist; however, they are not directly behind him they are located to the left back side of the stage. The audience is facing the performer and the band. The bands instruments used for this performance constant of a piano, two electric guitars, a drum set, two trumpets, one trombone, and two saxophones.
To help me understand and analyze a different culture, I watched the film Selena. The film tells the life story of the famous singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Not only does it just tell personal stories from her life, it also gives insight to the Mexican-American culture. Her whole life she lived in the United States, specifically in Texas, but was Hispanic and because of that both her and her family faced more struggles than white singers on the climb to her success. Even though the film is a story about a specific person, it brought understanding into the culture in which she lived. Keeping in mind that these ideas that I drew about the Mexican-American culture is very broad and do not apply to every single person in the culture, there were very obvious differences in their culture and the one that I belong. Mexican-American culture identifies with their family rather than individualized or spiritual identities and the culture has gone through significant changes because of discrimination and the changing demographics of the United States.
YES! Even before the Beatles! of course gringo baby boomers would probably think of stars such as Ritchie Valens, Chris Montez, The Champs, that is unless they were in southern California and flocking to Tijuana’s Mike’s Bar where bands like The Tijuana Five, Dug Dugs, Peace & Love or El Ritual where packing them in, standing room only, or the Convoy club where the great Carlos Santana got his foot in the door by playing bass with Javier Batiz, “Liverpool Cavern club style” ... we are talking about Mexico becoming the second country in the world where Rock and Roll was played and created.

Seemingly a harmless, mundane choice yet embroidered with great importance, I put on my mariachi suit that reminds me of passion and strength that I would need for the rest of my life. Choosing to be part of a youth mariachi group is the first of many decisions that had an impact on my personal growth. Six years later I am full of knowledge and integrity, but most importantly I found myself and I am now convinced that going to college is for me.
The Latin American music scene is an amazingly diverse, engaging and entertaining music culture. Thomas (2011) explains, “…Latin American music has engaged in ongoing dialogue and cultural exchange that has profoundly affected music making in Europe and the United States and, more recently, in Africa and Asia as well”. This paper will be describing different aspects of the music culture from its musical features, to the historical aspect of this interesting music culture. Also, I will discuss a personal experience with Latin American music. After researching the music culture, I attended a concert performed by Boogat, an Emmy award nominated Latin American musician from Quebec who has toured all over North America.
