This is the movie that is credited with boosting Jun Ji-hyun’s career and shooting her to stardom. Similarly, with director Kwak Jae-Yong, this movie made him a prominent figure in the Korean film industry. Couple of years back I watched The Sassy Girl which was released in 2001, simply because it was one of the most recommended Korean movies. I watched it and halfway through I got bored and ended up giving up on it. So I took this opportunity to re-watch the movie fully and thoroughly. The movie begins with a voice over which shows the present and goes back to tell the story of the past. it doesn’t matter who the audience is, anyone can relate to these feelings. Director Kwak creates a feeling that is times less and the message of his movie can transcend generations. Also this wasn’t a typical romance movie, it had a surprising twists and the audience got the dilemma of why the characters could not get together. It showed the audience the complexity of what human heart desires. How at times even though we want to let go of the past, it is not as easy as we think it would be. The movie shows the audience how even if the situation looks happy and fun filled, humans are capable of holding in so much pain inside that it can destroy our mind and relationship. One of the things I really found unique about this movie was how there wasn’t a villain or a bad guy. It was the mind itself that kept the characters together. Jun Ji-hyun’s Character wanted to get over her dead boyfriend but it did not matter how much she tried she could not let go of her past. As for Gyeon-woo, he never complained; he knew what was going through her mind and how she was fighting her own battle every day. He never asked her to consider his feelings but he let her take her time and help her get over her past slowly without ever rushing
