My theme for this forward is love and its battles, I have used a poem called “Advise to a teenage daughter” by Isobella Thrilling and two songs one being “Perfect Two” by Auburn and “Fifteen” by Taylor Swift. The poem demonstrates love as war and reveals what many girls do to get the attention of the one they love. Perfect Two is a song about a girl that isn’t complete without her man and how she feels they are perfect for eachother. Lastly, Fifteen is about how she thinks that she has everything sorted out and then he breaks her heart and it makes her relies there are other things in life.
In the poem “Advice to a teenage daughter” the poet develops the extended metaphor of a war game, she does this through the use of smells, lipsticks and other visual cosmetics they all develop the idea of love like it’s a war. The lipsticks are described as “brave ranks”, standing like soldiers at attention or guns lined up ready for battle. Bringing war into a poem about love is very relevant because love isn’t easy and it can be like war. “Behold the miniature armies of little jars packed with the scented dynamite of flowers.” This stance portrays the perfume on the girls stand, we are led to believe that it is explosive meaning it will draw the boys attention. This idea of the war game develops more as you read through the poem, “dreaded tweezers” and “stick on stars”. “Dreaded tweezers” is seen as like a boot camp it is painful but once it is done it is worth it and can pay off. So far this is showing that the girl is trying her hardest and will go through pain to win the ‘battle’ through cosmetics. These lines in the song sum up to the fact the when you are fifteen you heart does get broken and you do look back and wish you never fell for the act and that boys don’t mean everything sometimes you need to put yourself first and think about what you want in life. This songs also ties back to the poem as this song is like a war aswell she had to battle through getting her heart broken.
In Conclusion, these poems are very relevant to my theme of love and its battles. The poem and the songs that I used all connect in different ways the poem is about how she loves the boy so much and tries her hardest, perfect two is about how they are perfect together and the last song fifteen is about how her heart is broken. The poem and the songs I used sum up the journey through love, you try hard then you get them and its perfect but then your heart gets broken.
Kim Addonizio’s “First Poem for You” portrays a speaker who contemplates the state of their romantic relationship though reflections of their partner’s tattoos. Addressing their partner, the speaker ambivalence towards the merits of the relationship, the speaker unhappily remains with their partner. Through the usage of contrasting visual and kinesthetic imagery, the speaker revels the reasons of their inability to embrace the relationship and showcases the extent of their paralysis. Exploring this theme, the poem discusses how inner conflicts can be powerful paralyzers.
The first stanza describes the depth of despair that the speaker is feeling, without further explanation on its causes. The short length of the lines add a sense of incompleteness and hesitance the speaker feels towards his/ her emotions. This is successful in sparking the interest of the readers, as it makes the readers wonder about the events that lead to these emotions. The second and third stanza describe the agony the speaker is in, and the long lines work to add a sense of longing and the outpouring emotion the speaker is struggling with. The last stanza, again structured with short lines, finally reveals the speaker 's innermost desire to "make love" to the person the speaker is in love
In the world of teenagers everything seems to come and pass by so quickly. For instance the beginning of senior year. In Spite of being happy and excited were also generally nervous and anxious to see what our future holds. As senior year comes to an end, It then becomes as temporary as the summer sun but also the boundary of our life before we enter adulthood. Even then our future is still undefined.
Both poems represent the despairs and failures of the love they hone for their beloved, with brings a touch of sadness to the poems. From this the reader can feel almost sympathetic to the unrequited lovers, and gain an understanding of the perils and repercussions of love.
In “Late Poem to My Father” by Sharon Olds, the speaker, who is likely a stand-in for Olds herself, takes us through the relationship her father had with her grandfather. She then relates this to her relationship with her father. Starting with the title, the word “Late” could suggest that the father has died or it could suggest how she didn’t fully value her father’s love until recently. The poem is written in free verse with no particular pattern or rhyme scheme. There are no stanza breaks, but there is a lot of enjambment throughout the poem. The true beauty that war can hold despite its cruel nature is revealed in the poetry written later in the war. Guilaume Apollinaire’s poem “Gala” compares the burst of “two star shells” to a pink rose (5). The rose metaphor carries throughout the poem.
I personally loved everything that this poem stood for. I liked that this poem had two average people at its center. They were not young or insanely beautiful, but they still showed how amazing love can be and how love goes beyond everything. When it comes down to it love has no gender, age, race, or time it is just about humans loving other humans. In this week’s chapter it is discussed how romance itself has a huge cultural impact and this poem definitely connects with this idea. This poem also follows the cliche of love. The way that love is blinding and will conquer all is presented in a real and believable way, but then it can also be considered unrelatable for some because how romance is set up to be and how high the standards are for true love. Furthermore, I like the idea of love going beyond age, beauty, and time but realistically for most people they will never experience a love so intense. People can though understand how what is portrayed in the media is not how everyone experiences love and that people who differ from this unrealistic standard can still be in love in their own intense beautiful way.
Patricia Young’s poem Boys is a representation of implied heteronormacy in society. Young uses tropes and schemes such as allusion, metaphors and irony to convey the ways in which heterosexuality is pushed onto children from a young age. Poetry such as Boys is a common and effective medium to draw attention to the way society produces heteronormativity through gendered discourses that are typically used to understand sex. Boys does an excellent job at drawing its readers to the conclusion that it is an ironic poem trying to emphasize the over-excessive ways in which we express heterosexuality in daily life.
The physical effects of war overwhelm the naïve causing pain and suffering. Initially, war entangles the lives of youth, destroying the innocence that they experience as an aspect of their life. The girl “glid[ing] gracefully down the path” (1) and the boy “rid[ing] eagerly down the road” (9) have their enjoyable realities striped by the harshness of war. Likewise, war enters women’s lives creating turmoil. The woman who works “deftly in the fields” ( ) no longer is able to experience the offerings of life. The “wire cuts,” ( ) pushing her away from the normal flow of life. In addition, man undergoes tragic obstacles as a result of war. “A man walks nobly and alone” ( ) before the horrible effects of war set in on his life causing disruptions. War enters the life of man destroying the bond man shares with his beloved environment ( ).
Sylvia Plath’s jarring poem ‘Daddy’, is not only the exploration of her bitter and tumultuous relationship with her father, husband and perhaps the male species in general but is also a strong expression of resentment against the oppression of women by men and the violence and tyranny men can and have been held accountable for. Some people are born into this world without as many chances to get a better position in life. This can affect the people born into a lower class for the entirety of their life. In the poem “Saturday’s Child,” Countee Cullen uses imagery, personification, and similes to suggest the differences between people that are born into poverty and those that are born into an upper class part of society. Throughout this poem Cullen speaks about how the different social classes affect people; he does this with a pessimistic tone throughout the entirety of the poem.
The author uses imagery, contrasting diction, tones, and symbols in the poem to show two very different sides of the parent-child relationship. The poem’s theme is that even though parents and teenagers may have their disagreements, there is still an underlying love that binds the family together and helps them bridge their gap that is between them.

The poem "Aunt Jennifer 's Tigers" is about the trials of an older woman in distress because her marriage is in trouble, and she is too afraid to leave her husband. The most clear point in the poem is the ongoing contrast between the fictional Tigers and Aunt Jennifer.
