Doubt Doubt is a play about a priest who is being accused of having sexual interactions with the only black boy in the Catholic school and the principal, Sister Aloysius, is determined to prove her suspicions to be true. While it can be unclear throughout the play and even at the end if Father Flynn is innocent or guilty both Patrick Shanely and the cast of Doubt, put on by The University of Alabama, keep the mind wondering if there was a chance he could have been innocent. The importance of characters, their actions, and even the design of the costumes can help one determine if Father Flynn interacted inappropriately with the boy or if it appeared wrong due to a poisoned mind (Father Flynn to Sister James, act seven). Sister James, Sarah Grace, was constantly crying throughout the play, and whether Sarah Grace was really crying or not she made the audience believe she was truly upset over the situations Sister James was put into. When Sister James was speaking with Father Flynn in the garden she became very emotional due to Father Flynn yelling and protesting his innocence to her. I think the reason Sarah Grace was able to become so emotional during scenes was due to her young age. All of the other actors were able to hide their feelings and only feel what their character was feeling, but Sarah Grace was not able to which made me feel that she was able to become more in touch with her character. Sister James just wants to believe Father Flynn is innocent and she wants to see the good in him rather than have doubts against him. In this way I am similar to Sister James. Father Flynn was guilty. Throughout the play Father Flynn often raised his voice at both Sister James and Sister Aloysius while trying to prove his innocence. Father Flynn often got very defensive especially when in the office alone with Sister Aloysius. He stepped into her space while yelling at her which causes me to believe Flynn was going to do anything he could to have Sister Aloysius to drop the accusations. Father Flynn also tried to seclude Sister James away from Sister Aloysius in order to convince her of his innocence. This leads me to believe Father Flynn would do anything to keep his job to stay close to the boy and not have to let go of the relationship they
