#2202 Prompt: 3 People are afraid of things they don’t understand. During the time of Nazi rule in Germany, many people were afraid. Gestapo prowled the streets day and night, Jews were sent to concentration camps, and the swastika draped every building. Fear, specifically the fear of the Nazis, is a constant theme included in short writings of the time, and the novel Transit, by Anna Seghers. First, one of the short writings included in the Language and Literature study guide is about night bombings. The narrator describes the planes overhead as buzzing hornets. They sound fairly innocent, but you never know when they will release a bomb, or in the comparison of the hornet, sting you. People at the time were so afraid
of these bombers because they didn’t know when or where they would strike. The Nazis and the hornets are the same, and they both provoke fear, which is illustrated in this story. Next, another story in the Language and Literature guide that involves fear is about the weather. The story says that the weather, bad weather to be exact, is extremely unpredictable. It also mentions frequently that fear can come from bad weather: the clouds can darken, the wind can howl, and the rain can pour. This story illustrates in a way that anyone could understand, how frightening the Nazis were, how frightening the weather can be, and how they are similar in regard to fear. Finally, in the novel Transit, the narrator discusses the Nazis and the fear they bring. He compares the Nazis to wild ferocious dogs. They hunt and kill mercilessly. The narrator also mentions that packs of dogs have and alpha, or leader. In the case of Nazi Germany, that alpha is Adolf Hitler. He would make a demand, and it would be done. Transit explains through historical nonfiction the fear that Hitler and all of Nazi Germany invoked. In conclusion, fear is a recurring theme in works of Nazi time, and in Anna Seghers’ Transit. People fear what they don’t understand. Evidently, people didn’t understand the Nazis, and people don’t understand a lot now.
Pouring concrete does not seem to be an important job to most people, and writing an entire book about pouring concrete also seems banal. But if you look at the underlying social commentary of a nation going from the old Imperial Russia, to the new Soviet Union, it speaks to the power of people coming together to achieve a single goal. The Book Time, Forward! by Valentine Kataev shows how people from all over Russia came together to become the people of the Soviet Union. Stalin used his first five year plan to unify the people to work toward a single goal of updating Russia, and making her a world power. Kataevs book Time, Forward! shows unity through a concrete pouring competition, and the people of the Soviet Union swiftly move forward
“In response he expected us to play the part of an enthusiastic family, but we were unwilling to resume our old roles” (Sedaris 5). In life, unreliable people surround us. These people often break promises, bringing disappointment in one’s life. Sometimes the unreliable person may not realize the disappointment the broken promises bring to others. Like in the quote from “The Ship Shape” by David Sedaris, the father expected the family to be excited about the promises, but instead they were disappointed because they had been let down numerous times. Being continuously disappointed by a person can also lead to future problems such as not trusting the person, which eventually jeopardizes the relationship. This situation was true for both Sedaris and me. In both situations, people to whom we were close to made promises, but never delivered.
In the book The Descent of Alette by Alice Notley, the book is a twist to what readers would expect. In the story, a girl name Alette is chosen for a certain mission and she goes in not knowing what to expect. Alette goes on these journey and face with challenges that she must overcome, but it is more about the destination then than the journey itself. One of the important theme throughout the book is transformation.
In Elie Wiesel’s Night, he recounts his horrifying experiences as a Jewish boy under Nazi control. His words are strong and his message clear. Wiesel uses themes such as hunger and death to vividly display his days during World War II. Wiesel’s main purpose is to describe to the reader the horrifying scenes and feelings he suffered through as a repressed Jew. His tone and diction are powerful for this subject and envelope the reader. Young readers today find the actions of Nazis almost unimaginable. This book more than sufficiently portrays the era in the words of a victim himself.
Imagine being trapped in a ghetto, seeing communities leaving in trains, families being split up, never to see each other again.. The emotions that each and every Holocaust survivor must’ve gone through is overwhelming. Some things that are taken for granted, will never be seen again. While reading the two texts, Night by Elie Wiesel and “I Never Saw Another Butterfly” by Pavel Friedman, The two predominant emotions that prevailed most to Holocaust victims and survivors were hope and fear.
Throughout life people encounter a numerous amount of obstacles, some of these obstacles can be tougher than others. These obstacles don’t define who you are, how the situation is handled does. In the book The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen, Jessica encounters a tremendous obstacle that life could throw at her. Jessica has had to learn to adjust her life from the way that she used to live. Her life is changing and she has to decide if this accident defines who she is going to be while being surrounded by the love and comfort of her family.
Activities in the concentration camp struck fear within the hearts of the people who witnessed them, which led to one conclusion, people denied the Holocaust. Nazis showed no mercy to anybody, including helpless babies. “The Nazis were considered men of steel, which means they show no emotion” (Langer 9). S.S. threw babies and small children into a furnace (Wiesel 28). These activities show the heartless personality of the Nazis. The people had two options, either to do what the S.S. told them to do or to die with everyone related to them. A golden rule that the Nazis followed stated if an individual lagged, the people who surrounded him would get in trouble (Langer 5). “Are you crazy? We were told to stand. Do you want us all in trouble?”(Wiesel 38). S.S guards struck fear in their hostages, which means they will obey without questioning what the Nazis told them to do due to their fear of death. Culture has the power and ability to give someone spiritual and emotional distinction which shapes one's identity. Without culture society would be less and less diverse. Culture is what gives this earth warmth and color that expands across miles and miles. The author of “The School Days of an Indian Girl”, Zitkala Sa, incorporates the ideals of her Native American culture into her writing. Similarly, Sherman Alexie sheds light onto the hardships he struggled through growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation in his book The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven in a chapter titled “Indian Education”. While both Zitkala Sa and Sherman Alexie were Native Americans, and take on a similar persona showcasing their native culture in their text, the two diverge in the situations that they face. Zitkala Sa’s writing takes on a more timid shade as she is incorporated into the “white” culture, whereas Alexie more boldly and willingly immerses himself into the culture of the white man. At first, the Jews believe the Germans to be harmless. It takes dark times and drastic measures for the German’s true wickedness to be unveiled. One of the first instances in which the Jews are exposed to the true evil of their antagonists is the first moment they get off of their cattle cars at Birkenau-Auschwitz. Consumed by Madame Schachter’s prophesied “fire,” the sky symbolizes the flaming hell that the Jews are about to endure. At this moment, as the Jews stare silently at the ravenous chimneys spouting out flames, their worst nightmares evolve into reality. At midnight, the witching hour, the Jews’ eyes finally begin to see the evil that surrounds them.

The author’s purpose of Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, is to understand the concepts, strategies and understandings of how to always read first and then start something. The importance of this essay is to understand and comprehend our reading and writing skills by brainstorming our ideas and thoughts a lot quicker. In other words, we must always try to read first before we can brainstorm some ideas and to think before we write something. There are many reasons why I chose Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, by many ways that reading can help you to comprehend, writing, can help you to evaluate and summarize things after reading a passage, if you read, it can help you to write things better and as you read, it can help you to think and evaluate of what to write about.
When the infamous Hitler began his reign in Germany in 1933, 530,000 Jews were settled in his land. In a matter of years the amount of Jews greatly decreased. After World War II, only 15,000 Jews remained. This small population of Jews was a result of inhumane killings and also the fleeing of Jews to surrounding nations for refuge. After the war, emaciated concentration camp inmates and slave laborers turned up in their previous homes.1 Those who had survived had escaped death from epidemics, starvation, sadistic camp guards, and mass murder plants. Others withstood racial persecution while hiding underground or living illegally under assumed identities and were now free to come forth. Among all the survivors, most wished not to return to Germany because the memories were too strong. Also, some become loyal to the new country they had entered. Others feared the Nazis would rise again to power, or that they would not be treated as an equal in their own land. There were a few, though, who felt a duty to return to their home land, Germany, to find closure and to face the reality of the recent years. 2 They felt they could not run anymore. Those survivors wanted to rejoin their national community, and show others who had persecuted them that they could succeed.

The Dangers of Fear Irish Playwright, George Bernard Shaw, once said, “The worst sin toward our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them; that's the essence of inhumanity.” Inhumanity is mankind’s worst attribute. Every so often, ordinary humans are driven to the point where they have no choice but to think of themselves. One of the most famous examples used today is the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night demonstrates how fear is a debilitating force that causes people to lose sight of who they once were.
The holocaust, which lasted 6 years, was an event in time in which the Nazis based their power off of the fear of Jews. In 1984 it’s revealed that the Party uses fear to keep their people afraid in order to keep them under control and not revolt. Throughout the novel 1984, the author suggests that in order to have power you must instill fear.

Fear made the German people conform to Nazi ideology and beliefs. Therefore, the regime never received any significant opposition worldwide as the true brutal reality of Nazi Germany’s aims and its loyal mercenaries were unknown overseas. Terror infiltrated the minds of the population for several years which made it so significant compared to Nazi successes, consent and propaganda. Terror began in the formation of the Gestapo in 1933, to Kristallnacht in 1938 and then the continuation of it even further to 1944 in the Warsaw Uprising where the German army killed 250,000 Jewish inhabitants. Terror secured conformity and compliance of the people in the long term whereas consent only initiated Hitler’s regime in power.
