Trash invades our world, and we can stop it by recycling. The movie Waste Land, tells the story of an artist named Vik. Vik goes to Rio to visit the people that work at the landfill. He believes that only bad and nasty people work at the landfill, however; Vik meets the pickers, the people that gather recyclables at the landfill. Vik bonds with the pickers, and he wants to sell his art to make better lives for the pickers. During the course of the movie, Vik’s perspective of the pickers changes, and a sense of ethos forms between himself and the pickers. At the beginning of the film, Vik believes that the people at the landfill are nasty and dangerous. When Vik talks to his wife, he said, “These are probably the roughest people you could think of. I mean they’re all drug addicts, and it’s the end of the line” (Walker). This quote represents pathos because nobody knows if Vik faces …show more content…
When Vik summaries the pickers at the end of the film he said, “They are beautiful. They are great people” (Walker). In the beginning of the movie, Vik truly thought that the people in the landfill would be nasty and dangerous. Now, Vik knows that the pickers are amazing people that just ended up in a bad situation. The pickers represent a symbol of hope because if they keep fighting for better living conditions, they will one day become successful people. Vik said, “When you see the appetite for life that these people have and the way there carry themselves, it’s just inspiring” (Walker). When Vik spent time with the pickers, he learned that the pickers do not take shame in their job. The pickers inspire people because no matter what hardships life throws at them, the pickers will never give up. When you look at the pickers, a person might just think low of them. When I person talks to the pickers, they understand that the pickers could inspire the world to recycle and make the Earth a cleaner
As I stated in the beginning, Muniz took pictures of the catadores and had them sculpt their portraits with the garbage that they have picked. He then travels to London, bringing along one of the catadores, to auction off one of the portraits that was created. Tiao dos Santos, one of the catadores that traveled to London with Muniz, sat amazed and emotional as the portrait of himself, made of garbage, gets auctioned off for $50,000. He cries on Muniz’s shoulders as he expresses how he appreciated what he have done for them. Isis, one of the catadores states: “This work brought me realization.” This experience has not only changed their lives, but Vik Muniz also become changed. It has impacted their creativity, insight, purpose, spirituality, and life in general. The pickers have come up with plans outside of Gramacho. With the money from the auction, they buy a truck, equipment, and build a learning center and a library. “With the help of Tiao, the president of the pickers’ cooperative ACAMJG (the Association of Recycling Pickers of Jardim Gramacho), the city will pay out more than 1,700 pickers in a lump sum of about $7,500 each now that the landfill is closed. In addition, ACAMJG has picked up contracts to process recyclables at the World Cup 2014 and secured government contracts to work at new recycling plants opening in the city. In 2010, Brazil enacted its first federal waste management law that will fund recycling plants and legally recognize garbage pickers, including more than 8,000 members of the Movimento Nacional dos Catadores de Materiais Reciclaveis (National Movement of Collectors of Recyclable Materials), where Tiao has become one of the leaders. (pbs.org). These few life changing events are some of the benefits of combining art and social practice. Combining the two engage the world and create social
Lars' on dumpster diving is not a piece which is meant to be taken in a pitiful way. At the end of the essay he himself says he feels sorry for those that he scavenges from, those that put sentiment into material wealth. He goes into great detail on his dumpster diving exploits. The message of this essay is one of resilience and to make do with what one has. Examples are used quite frequently, the pizza shop or the fire ants, but also his language when he says "he may wipe off the egg yolk off the can but he cannot erase the stigma of eating eating garbage".
Initially, Vik Muniz displayed an attitude of pity and shock towards the pickers and the landfill when he first encountered the video revealing the horrendous conditions in the landfill. He reveals the map of the landfill to his wife and describes it as “This is the end of their life. This is where everything not good goes” (Walker). The geographical location of the landfill is secluded from the world, so the pickers will not be the most experienced group of people in regards to cooperating with an outsider. The
Ever found something in the trash and taken it home? While many partake in dumpster diving leisurely, there are a special few who get everything they need from garbage: clothes, electronics, and even food. "Cultivate poverty... like a garden herb. Don't trouble yourself to get new things whether clothes or friends," (Thoreau, Generation 25). This brilliant quote relates very closely to the freeganism movement which fights wastefulness in our consumerist society.
Unlike the two previous instances, this man had a strong and accurate self-concept. As a result, he was able to do what he needed to do without worrying about his image. Therefore, this man had reached self-actualization. He had been homeless and had to live off of dumpster diving, which led him to write this piece with a matter-of-fact tone, almost as if he was writing a “how to” on dumpster diving. The man had no shame in what he had to do to survive. Moreover, he described the stages a dumpster diver goes through, and he, in a way, threw a bit of shame on the beginners who are disgusted with what they find because they think they are too good for dumpster diving. The author wrote, “At first the new scavenger is filled with disgust and self-loathing… Everything seems to stink. He can wipe the egg yolk off the found can, but he cannot erase from his mind the stigma of eating garbage… He begins to understand: People throw away perfectly good stuff, a lot of perfectly good stuff,” (SOURCE #). The author did not care what others thought about him not because he was trashy, but because he was confident in who he truly was. He was an intelligent and reasonable human being who knew what needed to be done and was not embarrassed to do it.
In the film, there is a garbage mountain that destroys the city, changes an environment, and the land can’t hold plentiful trash but people still don’t care about it and keep doing what they want to. In New York city, we can see people littering on subway stations, streets even though they have the garbage cans near them because they think that it’s not their responsibility. If this kept happening and people don’t change their perception towards making their surroundings dirty then that day is not far when our tourist state, New York, will be famous for the dirt, and garbage. When Joe and Rita wake up after 500 years of hibernation, they see how language, environment, values, manners, etiquettes changed in the society. It teaches us that we should pass our manners, values, beliefs to our next generation and also teach them how to take care of our surroundings. The best time to do anything is now, so if we are not cautious about our nature, culture, so our future generations will face worst situations. It is right that they will have the technology but they won’t have an intelligence to use the scientific
The Bad and The Beautiful (1952) and State and Main (2000) are films within films that unmask Hollywood Cinema as a dream factory and expose the grotesque, veneer hidden by the luxury of stars. The Bad and the Beautiful, directed by Vincent Minnelli, is a black and white film narrated in flashback form. The films theatrical nature requires more close-ups than wide-screen shots to capture the character’s psychological turmoil. For example, Fred and Jonathan’s car ride is captured in a close-up to signify their friendship; however their relationship deteriorates after Jonathan’s deceit. While the camera zooms out, Fred stands alone motionless. Here, Fred is captured from a distance at eye-level and he becomes ostracized by the film industry and
No Man’s Land is a heartbreaking anti-war movie which is played in the background of the Bosnian war. The movie is a fable; it was also the first writing by its writer Tanovic. It was co-produced by many companies belonging to different countries like Bosnia-Herzegovina, UK and others. Two injured soldiers, a Bosnian and other the Bosnian Serb, are entrapped with their lines in the attempt for survival. They face each other in the trench where they allow time to pass for darkness to prevail. They argue with each other as well and even identify some common ground. Complicating the situation is another injured Bosnian soldier, Savagovic, who regains his consciousness. Bosnian Serbs have planted a land mine under him so that in case of any moment, it is detonated.
Rogers describes the specific process the garbage man goes through when collecting trash. From emptying the bins to hydraulic compressors crushing the trash and taking said trash to a sanitary land fill, Roger gives a detailed description of this routine that is never really thought about. Most people don’t think twice about what their garbage man does so when it was described with such detail it catches the interest of the reader. This allows Rogers to now begin talking about landfills and other larger topics. The way Rogers keeps the interest of the reader is by using very visual details in her writing.
Based on a true story, the movie ‘Lone Survivor’ features four Navy SEALs that set out on a mission to Afghanistan with orders to capture and kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. The Navy SEALS are detected by villagers and the mission was compromised. Ultimately, the mission had been discovered and the men found themselves surrounded by dozens of Taliban soldiers. One of the Navy SEAL soldiers managed to dispatch to base and retrieve assistance but the Taliban shoot down the helicopter. During battle, three of the Navy SEAL soldiers were killed leaving one still alive.
It appeals to ethos because it is ethical to recycle. The PSA also should make a person feel better that they are lending a hand to the environment to make it a better place. It appeals to pathos because the video shows the emotion of the plastic bottle and allows one to sympathize with an inanimate object. The communication style was appropriate and effective because of the emotional and ethical factors. It is convincing in telling its story and getting its point across in only 60 seconds and is entertaining to watch as well.
Early in the fact-filled film, Waste Land, a helicopter hauls the audience around Christ the Redeemer, a white statue soaring over Rio de Janerio, with his arms stretch out supporting the wealthy side of the city. Behind the statue, we originate into the world's sizeable landfill- Jardim Gramacho. Vik Muniz, Brazil-born artist, decided that he is taking time off from the liberal arts world and go to Rio de Janeiro and avail the people that is struggling. “It’s a very exclusive,
Later on, they took pictures of the people who works there. He took pictures of a woman called Isis, who works at the landfill. They are imitating an artwork from another artist, but they are doing it at the landfill with the background of the garbage and the pickers. He took pictures of women called Irma and Magna. They took a picture of a girl called Salem and her children; then the image was reflected on the floor to make a large-scale artwork and they filled the spot with recyclable garbage to make the artwork. They did the same thing with the pictures of Zumbi, Tiao, Isis, Irma, and Magna. The pickers helped with the artwork because it is made of recyclable garbage. The artwork can be more appreciated above the land. Vik took pictures of each artwork to sell them and give the money to the pickers. Vik and Tiao went to London to sell them and the artwork of Tiao was sold for 20,000 dollars. Each person that helped with the artwork wanted a new life, some of them didn’t want to come back to the landfill, some were still working there but they were proud of it. After that, Vik opened a gallery that can be found the pictures of the artwork. His solo show at MAM in Rio de Janeiro was second only to Picasso in attendance records; it was here that Vik first exhibited his “Pictures of Garbage Series” in Brazil.
After watching "Harvest of Shame” I thought the movie was very fair, accurate, and responsible. In the movie Murrow informed the audience of the issue that was happening in society. Murrow makes the audience aware of his message by interviewing families and people who are living and experiencing what is going on. I thought that this movie was fair because he did not stereotype or have a bias standpoint on the top. His story line was accurate and he informed his audience on how people were suffering through these times. When he used facts on how much they got paid, and by showing them working it shows the information he was portraying to his audience was accurate. In one of the rules in SPJ code it states, “ Be vigilant and courageous about holding those with power accountable. Give voice to the voiceless.” This shows Munro was accurate in his movie because he gathered information from people that were being slaves and experiencing what he was talking about.
The United States produces “about 8.25 billion tons of solid wastes each year” (Russell 1). People do not realize the impact they have on our planet and environment. When people throw anything in the trashcan, they are contributing to the destruction of our planet. The number landfills in the United States are decreasing, but the amount and volume of waste being thrown into the new landfills is increasing (Russell 4). Because of this escalating amount of garbage, Methane which contributes to global warming is an outcome of these landfills (Russell 7). As a result, our planet is suffering because of this epidemic. The garbage being put in the landfills could be recycled, but not enough businesses, ...
