Eugenio Derbez is a Mexican actor, director, producer, and writer. He started his acting career at 12 years old and continues in the same career. He is well known for his outstanding personality and great acting. He is “one of the most influential creative forces in Latin America.” Eugenio’s TV shows and movies are not only popular in Mexico, but also in the United Stated through Univision. For over twenty years, he has won thousands of people’s hearts. His life consists of being with different women all day. As portrayed in the movie, Valentin is very dishonest and irresponsible. As one of his affairs, Julia (Jessica Lindsey), claims her baby is Valentin’s, he has to raise the baby on his own. Julia simply leaves her child, Maggie, with Valentin. The audience can see how irresponsible the mother is as well. The journey begins. Valentin does not want to have any responsibility for the baby. Therefore, he and Maggie travel to Los Angeles in search of Julia. Valentin has in mind to find Julia, leave Maggie, and return to Acapulco. At this point in the movie, he is the same dishonest, irresponsible Valentin. Unfortunately, his plans do not go so well. Valentin and Maggie have to live in an apartment, which looks more like a toy store. His attitude toward keeping the baby begins to change. Eventually, Valentin ends up caring very much for his daughter. Although he does not know anything about kids, he does everything he possibly can to keep her happy. Valentin wants to make Maggie proud. Therefore, as much as he is afraid of heights, he manages to find a job as a stuntman. A joke in the film consists of the fact that the stuntman is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Norma was intelligent, attractive, and everything that made a person perfect. But then as they grew up, Norma started doing drugs, and got pregnant while she was still in high school. Baby narrates her story through her naïve, innocent child voice. She serves as a filter for all the events happening in her life, what the narrator does not know or does not comprehend cannot be explained to the readers. However, readers have reason not to trust what she is telling them because of her unreliability. Throughout the beginning of the novel we see Baby’s harsh exposure to drugs and hurt. Jules raised her in an unstable environment because of his constant drug abuse. However, the narrator uses flowery language to downplay the cruel reality of her Montreal street life. “… for a kid, I knew a lot of things about what it felt like to use heroin” (10). We immediately see as we continue reading that Baby thinks the way she has been living her life is completely normal, however, we as readers understand that her life is in fact worse then she narrates. The movie analyzed in this paper is The Mission. This movie contains several sociological aspects and concepts. The concepts most easily identified are the ones that will be discussed in the following pages of this paper. Those concepts are Social Inequality, Deviance, and Subcultures. Social inequality is the social differences that exist whenever one group of people has different access to the rewards a society offers. Deviance is a variation from a set of norms or shared social expectations. Finally subcultures are groups of persons who share in the main culture of a society but also have their own distinctive values, norms, and life styles. These three concepts are clearly recognizable and are the concepts most prevalent in storyline of the movie.
