The film “Argo”, directed by Ben Affleck, re-enacted the events of the Canadian Caper during the Iranian Hostage Crisis (1979-1981) in Tehran, Iran. Not all 53 hostages were captured as six American diplomats escaped and were taken into the care of Ken Taylor in the Canadian embassy. Taylor and the Canadian government created a plan to help the diplomats escape, however, they needed an intelligence force to back them up, which they didn’t have. The C.I.A was contacted to help Canada get the diplomats back to Canada safely with fake Canadian passports. The C.I.A created the fake movie called “Argo” as well as a fake studio and script. This occurred in 1979 in November. Not all the hostages were captured as six managed to escape before they were captured by the students (Central Intelligence Agency, 2012). These six hostages fled the embassy and were taken into the care of the Canadian embassy, which was run by Ken Taylor (Central Intelligence Agency, 2012). Ken Taylor and the Canadian government had a plan to help the six diplomats return safely to Canada with fake passports and identities as Canadian citizens (Houpt, 2013). Although, Canada didn’t have an intelligence in their country, the C.I.A from America was contacted to put the plan into action, where they created a fake movie called “Argo” with a fake script (which made no sense) as well as a fake studio (Central Intelligence Agency, 2012). This fake movie helped the diplomats escape, however, there was a good chance of this plan failing as a few rescue attempts previously had failed, creating a huge embarrassment for America (Central Intelligence Agency, 2012). The movie, however, didn’t portray these details as the movie idea as well as the plan to escape was all Tony Mendez’s idea, making it seem as if Ken Taylor didn’t have a clue what to do (Central Intelligence Agency, 2012).
