Analysis Of 'Social Issues: A Woman In Uniform'

When we are young we were taught that boys wore blue and worked, while girls wore pink dresses and stayed at home. They might not have said it out loud or gave it a name but it was implied. Girls played with dolls, and boys played with balls. As we got older we learned it was called sexism. It got worse with as we became adults. In “Social Issues: a Woman in Uniform” an NYPD officer tell of what its really like to work in the law department. Before I read this article I thought I had a pretty good idea on what it was like to be a women in the work force. Sure it might be a little harder, women get paid less and might not get treated as well; but how bad could it really be? While reading I found myself want to cry, laugh and yell within this one article. This article is written like a woman is just sitting down and telling you about what its like, and it just makes the message more powerful. It starts out with a very big message (“Women in Uniform” 1) says, “My first uniform was a pink leotard and pink tights. Not a black leotard, mind you, the leotard had to be pink. My ballet teacher absolutely insisted; she said pink was de rigueur for little girls at all the grand schools in Europe. Black leotards, she implied, were bourgeois.” This didn’t …show more content…

But then in (“Women in Uniform” 1) it tells a story about how an officer saves the woman from a man. The officer was walking back to her police car when she sees a woman who looks frightened coming towards her. She tells her about how she was on a date and he began to get creepy, so she ran away from him. He and then comes up interest take her away telling the officer it’s all good. They get into a little argument and like to switch he seems to finally notice her uniform and backs off. This was really nice to hear that story; it made me feel better about being a police
