Slave Resistance: Enslaved Women in the Old South One of the ways that enslaved men and women retained their dignity during slavery is their resistance against their owners; covertly and overtly. Stephanie M. H. Camp’s book, Closer to Freedom: Enslaved Women and Everyday Resistance in the Plantation South, emphasized the way slaves, particularly enslaved women, expressed their own unique forms of resistance. Often, researchers neglect to delve into other forms of resistance aside from obvious ones such as running away or rebellion. Camp utilizes slave narratives and interviews, papers and journals to scrutinize covert forms of resistance that enslaved women had done in the antebellum south. This is shown when she explains how slaves express, using Edward Said’s term, “rival geography” in which they utilize their knowledge and proper usage within and around the plantation space; thus, challenging the control of space, time and movement of southern plantation owners through movement of bodies, objects, and information (Camp 7). She focuses not only in the obvious forms of resistance, but also its disguised forms by utilizing resources such as slave narratives and interviews, papers and journals. She demonstrates how enslaved people threatened the control of plantation owner’s space, time and movement through movement of bodies, objects, and information. Her work exhibits extended research of analysis on already researched topics. Camp gives a new angle on these already researched topics by providing a deeper analysis as if she knows what these enslaved women truly think. Thus, successfully showing the efforts of black women trying to establish ownership of their own body, showing their hope for freedom, and expressing their emotions as a way to show that they are more than just the price they were bought

According to Hunter, the period between 1877 and 1915 is critical to understanding the social transformations in most southern cities and complicating this transformation are the issues of race, class, and gender. The examination of the lives of black domestic workers reveals the complexity of their struggles to keep their autonomy with white employers and city officials. For example, African-American women built institutions and frequently quit their jobs in response to the attempts by southern whites to control their labor and mobility. Slavery is a term that can create a whirlwind of emotions for everyone. During the hardships faced by the African Americans, hundreds of accounts were documented. Harriet Jacobs, Charles Ball and Kate Drumgoold each shared their perspectives of being caught up in the world of slavery. There were reoccurring themes throughout the books as well as varying angles that each author either left out or never experienced. Taking two women’s views as well as a man’s, we can begin to delve deeper into what their everyday lives would have been like.
1. The insight that each of these sources offers into slave life in the antebellum South is how slaves lived, worked, and were treated by their masters. The narratives talk about their nature of work, culture, and family in their passages. For example, in Solomon Northup 's passage he describes how he worked in the cotton field. Northup said that "An ordinary day 's work is considered two hundred pounds. A slave who is accustomed to picking, is punished, if he or she brings less quantity than that," (214). Northup explains how much cotton slaves had to bring from the cotton field and if a slave brought less or more weight than their previous weight ins then the slave is whipped because they were either slacking or have no been working to their
When reading about the institution of slavery in the United States, it is easy to focus on life for the slaves on the plantations—the places where the millions of people purchased to serve as slaves in the United States lived, made families, and eventually died. Most of the information we seek is about what daily life was like for these people, and what went “wrong” in our country’s collective psyche that allowed us to normalize the practice of keeping human beings as property, no more or less valuable than the machines in the factories which bolstered industrialized economies at the time. The film is based on Douglas Blackmonbook Slavery by Another Name, and the plot of the film revolves around the history and life of African Americans after Emancipation Proclamation; which was effected by President Abraham Lincoln in 1865, for the purpose of ending slavery of African Americans in the U.S. The film reveals very brutal stories of how slavery of African Americans persisted in through forced labor and cruelty; especially in the American south which continued until the beginning of World War II. Slavery was created in pre-revolutionary America at the start of the seventeenth century. By the time of the Revolution, slavery had undergone drastic changes and was nothing at all what it was like when it was started. In fact the beginning of slavery did not even start with the enslavement of African Americans. Not only did the people who were enslaved change, but the treatment of slaves and the culture that each generation lived in, changed as well.
This is the account of an ex-slave by the name of William Barker who now resides in Bethany, AL. He is approximately 95 years old and lives in a little shack with a plot of land. He has worked for some local townsfolk doing some grounds keeping and gardening since he was freed when he was 20. But for the most part, Barker keeps to himself. He has no wife and no children. He is only 5 foot 4 and may weigh about 145 lbs. As a slave he worked as a gardner, and later learned to cook, but soon thereafter was freed. Gardening is all he seems to know. However, he seems very proficient at hunting. He says that is the only way he keep alive, living off what God gives him from the land and water. He was son to Frances William and Eliza William. His father died in the war. Because of his size and ability to cook, William Barker did not go to war. His mammy died within weeks of being free due to starvation. Here is his account
During the eighteenth and nineteenth-century, notions of freedom for Black slaves and White women were distinctively different than they are now. Slavery was a form of exploitation of black slaves, whom through enslavement, lost their humanity and freedom, and were subjected to dehumanizing conditions. African women and men were often mistreated through similar ways, especially when induced to labor, they would eventually become a genderless individual in the sight of the master. Despite being considered “genderless” for labor, female slaves suddenly became women who endured sexual violence. Although a white woman was superior to the slaves, she had little power over the household, and was restricted to perform additional actions without the consent of their husbands. The enslaved women’s notion to conceive freedom was different, yet similar to the way enslaved men and white women conceived freedom. Black women during slavery fought to resist oppression in order to gain their freedom by running away, rebel against the slaveholders, or by slowing down work. Although that didn’t guarantee them absolute freedom from slavery, it helped them preserve the autonomy and a bare minimum of their human rights that otherwise, would’ve been taken away from them. During the history of slavery, the enslaved African Americans’ lived a tough life. From the men, women, and children life was all about surviving being under slavery. Being enslaved and under the vision of white masters, the Africans Americans worked from the early morning until the sun went down on the plantations. Every day the African Americans suffered from illness, starvation, abuse, and more. Camp’s Closer to Freedom is an examination of black women’s resistance to slavery as a way to disprove previous notions of slaves as content to their enslavement. She takes advantage of personal slave narratives, white planter papers, and oral histories such as WPA interviews. Eugene Genovese’s Roll, Jordan, Roll claims that enslaved men and women did not have successful large-scale acts of resistance because of slaveholder paternalism. As a result, resistance was portrayed as insignificant and infrequent given that the greatest effective paternalistic regimes inspired compliance among enslaved people.
