The novel, “Sense and Sensibility,” by Jane Austen delves into the lives of two young girls. Their strong personalities are exposed through their relationships with other characters and their actions. Corresponding with the title, sense and sensibility are the prevailing personalities of the two girls, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood. By analyzing their personalities, we get a better idea of the traditions and way of living during the 1700’s in England.
The title is a metaphor for the two main characters and also introduces the main theme of the book. Marianne represents sensibility, and Elinor represents sense. We find out early on that Elinor does not share her feelings with other people, not even her sister. She remains very composed and to herself. When Edward comes into the story there is an immediate attraction. Elinor tells no one of her feelings but she feels greatly for him. It is just assumed that they are meant for each other because they hit it off very well. Unfortunately one day Edward has to leave Elinor and does not say anything. Elinor is deeply saddened but still continues to hide her emotions. Edward does promise he will come down to their cottage and deliver an atlas for Margaret. When the atlas comes and not Edward, the only one who ends up crying is Margaret and not Elinor. Margaret understands her sister. She knew Elinor will not show her sad emotions but she can tell that Elinor wishes Edward would have come back. Marianne being the emotional sister is sad for her sister. She also gained a relationship with Edward, as her sister got closer with him. Since he did not return she feels betrayed as though she has lost a dear friend. ...cism forms part of the intellectual and artistic background of this novel’s period. Marianne’s personality reflects the romantic elements. She embraces romance and imagination. Marianne is very in touch with her emotions and is not afraid to show it. Opposing the romanticism view is Elinor’s personality. Her cold, emotionless personality creates a lack of harmony in this novel. The novel places a lot of emphasis on contrasting views.
All in all, we see what harm and goodness sense and sensibility can bring. Having an excess of one can be extremely detrimental. Both girls face many difficulties with other characters but especially their own personalities throughout this novel. Fortunately for them they help each other and learn to balance their personalities. This ultimately works out for them, as they both end up happily together with their suitors.
