So much time can be wasted through procrastination that you might believe you have several lives to lead instead of only one. People who become increasingly frustrated about their procrastination habits fear that they are wasting their lives yet avoid doing what would help them to make more productive use of their time. This is what Knaus (1998, p. 7) calls the fundamental procrastination paradox: ‘When we try to buy time by procrastinating, we condemn ourselves to running out of time.'" (p. 54). The cost of procrastination - "an extremely disabling psychological condition" Neenan's clinical perspective documents the costs of procrastination; costs that have been clearly documented in the blog to date as well. He writes, "Chronic procrastination can have high costs: It has been associated with depression, guilt, low exam grades, anxiety, neuroticism, irrational thinking, cheating and low self-esteem. As a chronic procrastinator myself I would have to say from experience that I do more often than not make a decision to procrastinate. When I procrastinate it is most times because I believe that I don’t need the time that I am given to get my work done, or simply that I don’t want to work on the project that day. In a paper written by a Serendip Student entitled “Procrastination: Habit or Disorder,” the author sheds light on the psychological view point of procrastination. The author breaks it up into two categories, behavioral procrastination and decisional procrastination. The author relates behavioral procrastination to self-handicap, meaning that those people use procrastination as an excuse to blame something for the reason that they did not pass that test. In this article, the author uses an experiment conducted by Ferrari and Tic, “participants (men and women) perform an identical task twice. In the first study, participants were notified that they would be evaluated on their performance of the task. Time was allotted for practice or engaging in fun activities. Results found that participants procrastinated for 60% of the time. The second study described the identical task as a fun game. Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) is designed to confront a client’s irrational beliefs (Corey 2017). First created by Albert Ellis, REBT emphasizes the importance of assessing, deciding, and thinking about one’s own cognitive process. Therapists who use this technique often confront a client’s irrational thoughts directly; the therapist encourages new, more beneficial ways of thinking. The current client is suffering from feelings of anxiety and inadequateness brought on by her father’s disapproval; many of the thoughts she has are irrational and she constantly blames herself for her father’s actions and beliefs about her. REBT would be beneficial to her situation because it would help identify her irrational thoughts and consequently lead to more rational ones (Corey 2017).
Procrastination comes from the thought of an individual knowing that they can do the same job at a later time. Everyone has been guilty of procrastinating because it is a human fear that no one can escape. To procrastinate is to put off or defer until another time, in other words it may mean to delay (Marano). In Psychology Today, Hara Marano said “twenty percent of all humans identify themselves as chronic procrastinators” (“Marano”). Procrastination is a human behavior that every college student has experienced at some point in his or her educational paths. For some college students, procrastination is a minor issue, for other college students, procrastination is a way of life that results in stress and could possibly be easily be avoided. Why? Procrastination can be broken down into three categories: how someone is considered a procrastinator, characteristics of a procrastinator, and how to escape procrastination.
There have been countless times in my life where I have struggled to stay focused on a task ahead of me. I always plan out my work time ahead in order for me to complete a task, but every time I find that I have to revise my plan every day closer to the deadline. The little work that I should have done each day turns into a tremendous amount of work before the due date. Occupying myself with other things that keep me entertained, only brings me a lot of distress at the end. As I continue to torture myself , this bad habit of mine continous to dwell inside of me. One could say that there may be many implied meanings to this concept, but nevertheless, this force that messes with me everyday is considered to be procrastination.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines procrastination as “to put off intentionally the doing of something that should be done.” To understand procrastination, you must first discover why humans procrastinate even though it is the obvious wrong choice. Many scientists and researchers have studied and examined why one procrastinates, but I believe it is best explained by Alan Henry, a journalist for the online news network Life Hacker. In the article, Henry suggests that the cause for procrastination is not that students are just too lazy or bored to actually work on the task. He explains that our brains simply choose to do something more rewarding. Whether it is just a text to a friend or a funny short video clip, students still choose a distraction over working on their assigned paper, knowing this causes them stress, worry, and a worse grade in the end. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is a therapy developed by Albert Ellis with the goal of helping client’s modify their self talk. (Smith, 2012) Self talk is intrapersonal communication that occurs within ones mind, disturbed behavior and unhappiness are the result of irrational self talk and is based on the way one reacts and interprets the various events in their lives. Thus, if a client interprets a given event negatively they will then start the negative self talk within their own mind which will then lead to negative responses.
Many people live in a state of depression and in frustration because they can't get over the hump of procrastination. It's not that they want to procrastinate or that they are lazy. It's that they secretly are controlled by fear. They fear failure. They fear the weight of their responsibilities. They fear change. All of these fears are a normal part of living as a human being. But when someone's life is controlled by these fears, they will find that they suffer the negative consequences of procrastination. They will suffering things such as low self-esteem, underachievement, and time will seem like it's speeding by them. There is help for such a person as this.

As a college student Procrastination hinders my academic caree6r. Students procrastinate because they get distracted, overwhelmed by the task or just lazy, however students can overcome procrastination by developing a schedule, carefully planning academic task and improving time management. My personal experinces, O'Reilly, Sally’s article, and Edwin C. Bliss’s book will validate my panaceas to procrastination.

It all depends on the person doing the procrastinating. Procrastination is not always meant to happen; sometimes it simply happens because a person is too busy. Procrastination has both good and bad causes and effects, can cause failure, and bad decisions.
