Project runway is a reality show broadcasted on Lifetime for potential designers to compete among each other for fashion glory. Well-known model Heidi Klum was the host while fashion consultant Tim Gunn was the co-host and the mentor of the show. The season I studied, Season 14 was controversial as netizen criticized Ashley Nell Tipton who won the show by creating the first plus size collection in Project Runway history.

My thesis statement is although most of the challenges were individual challenges, the competitive instinct between the designers made the dominant response tendency increased. When they involved in a group challenge, out-group derogation became overboard as everyone was aiming to survive in the show.

16 designers competed among each other and progressively eliminated. The final four designers had to present a complete fashion collection at New York Fashion Week. The ultimate winner would receive $100000 to launch their line and also other incentives such a fashion spread on Marie Claire Magazine.

At the start of each episode, a challenge was given. They needed to create the best design and display it on the runway. The time, materials and theme were restricted and vary in each episode. Based on the judges’ score, one contestant would be the winner while one contestant would be eliminated in every episode.
