Critical Analysis Essay for Premium Harmony by Stephen King

Nobody knows when they will pass on in this world. The short story Premium Harmony was written by Stephen King. Premium Harmony is a masterpiece of mystery and it brilliantly portrays how life is full of unexpected events that nobody can possibly plan for. One day you could be mowing the lawn and going about your daily life and one little unexpected event can change your life forever. In Premium Harmony this happens and it displays the importance of appreciating what you have before it is gone because anything and everything can disappear at any given moment. At one moment Ray is sitting in his car arguing with his wife Mary about buying grass seed because they need to sell their house and in order to do that they need to fix the lawn that has been dried out from the drought that summer. Ray wanted to wait another year before they fix it and sell the house. Then Mary says “We can 't wait another year, Ray. We 'll be bankrupts.”(King, 2009) This shows that they are just living their daily lives and the extent of their worries are on selling their house and fixing the lawn. Later on in the story Ray is kneeling over his wife Mary as she is on the floor unconscious. The store manager offers ray a shirt to cover her face. Ray says “God, no! She might only be unconscious. We 're not doctors.”(King, 2009) This proves that in such a short amount of time everything can drastically change. At one moment they were sitting in their car worried about fixing the lawn to sell their house and in the next moment Ray is on his knees worried to death that his wife may have just died.

The second hidden meaning in this short story is about what people can miss even though its right in front of them. Ray is sitting in the car with Mary and the story states “He can see the dog in the rear view mirror, watching her.”(King, 2009) The story talks briefly about how biz is always watching Mary. This could be viewed as a sign that the dog knows something is wrong with Mary but Ray does not get the hint. This proves that in life there are some signs that something is going to happen but they are often overlooked and
