Therefore it is easy to say that the wise man does not show this because he does not feel anyone else emotions but his own. One man is only responsible for his own emotions and when it comes to pity it is the sorrow that is shown in other people. Therefore this is the idea that a wise man does not show pity for another because pity is based upon the sorrow of another individual rather than their own. They can feel sorrow for themselves as well as the other emotions but as soon as it comes to the sorrow of another individual and feeling the sorrow for another individual that is when it turns into pity. I mean to some point I agree with the fact that when it comes to pity it is the sorrow of the mind brought about by the distress of others. I think that pity is something that one’s feels for someone else when they can understand what one is going through however they are not able to help them and they are completely helpless with making that individual feel better. However I do not agree with the fact that a wise man will not show pity. If someone has a heart they should be able to show pity, showing pity does not make you weak, it means that you are human. I think that when it comes to compassion however just because one is more well off than another does not mean that they should not show compassion for another. If anything thing they should be more willingly to reach out a hand to help the less fortunate out. When it comes to American’s, I would have to say that we are extremely selfish people and American’s are not as willing to reach out a helping hand to the people around them. This is very sad yet I think that is just how our society has turned. It is still seen that American’s are very helpful with one another and are very helpful to the ones around us that who need help. However with pity his view is very different because most normal people show each other pity. The ones who do not show pity are usually the closed minded, worthless, selfish people who believe it is not their place to feel pity for another because it is not their life and it is not their problem. Americans like to turn their head to the people who are less fortunate than themselves. Many people show empathy for humans like homeless people or ill family members or even just someone in a bad state. These people you can say show responsibility towards those events that are unpredictable in life. There are many people that show this, many people that explain this, and even many people that cause those emotions. These people don’t feel the same things we feel, these people see society in different eyes, in different ways, and in other words in different perspectives. They feel that they cannot forgive people for events that caused them anger, depression, or even made them feel like if they weren't worth anything.
Human beings surpass other animals in the ability to vicariously experience other beings feelings. Two overlapping and interchangeable terms have been developed to explain human’s capacity to experience others’ feelings- sympathy and empathy. Though convenient, the interchanging has created some confusion. Burton, in his support, points out people always confuse the word empathy with sympathy, compassion as well as pity, which are just but reactions to other people’s plight (1). This paper discusses the difference between empathy and sympathy and analyzes the story “Every day Use” from the sympathy and empathy perspective.
The book, A Grief Observed by C. S. Lewis, (1961), was written from his journal he kept after the death Lewis’s wife, Joy Davidman in 1960. Lewis was a bachelor for almost 58 years before he married Joy Davidman Greshman in March of 1959. People in America tend to think that a shelter is best for the homeless, but most of these people do not go to shelters for a reason. For example, in paragraph 7, on page 191, Anna says, “certainly some prefer to do so because they are emotionally ill, because they have been locked in before and they are damned if they will be locked in again.” These homeless people can have emotional or physical problems preventing them from going. Also, people will criticize the homeless and not look at these people as humans. People do not see the homeless as regular humans, instead they just criticize them. Even if they do not know the situation. I also look at these people differently. I feel sorrow for them and think they should find a shelter to live in like most Americans. This is the stereotype of the homeless people. We all think that they aren’t normal and should find a shelter to get help. Finally, Americans always look over the fact that they need help, but we shouldn’t go to drastic measures to help them. I will pass hundreds of homeless people, and helping them will never even cross my mind. Sometimes I won’t even notice them when I walk past where they are sleeping. When life turns into a living nightmare, a child may not know what is real nor what is fake, life may become confusing. In the excerpt A Death in the Family by James Agee, this is the unfortunate sequence of events. Mark Sundeen says “Begging may be the most shameful act in America.” But why is that so? If we take a look at religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism, giving alms to the poor is thought as “… increasing the chances [of being] admitted into paradise or reincarnated in a good body…” (McMahon). Begging in America is looked down at for the reason that over time begging has evolved from a person who has been financially stricken and cannot afford to live, to someone who is looking to earn some extra cash.

Some people may use sympathy as empathy as they do not truly understand the meaning of empathy and sympathy. The difference between empathy and sympathy is that, empathy is a process to input effort to attempt to “comprehend another’s experience”, while sympathy is a “direct perceptual awareness of another person’s experience” (Decety & Chaminade, 2003, p.127). For personal experience, one time, a friend felt hungry, the possible solution was suggested to buy a food to eat, however, the problem that lead to hunger was lack of money. Sympathy can only see other’s situation or circumstance apparently, but cannot feel what exactly the person needs and recognize the difficulties of the situation.
