Patching holes by Andi Long is a creative nonfiction story about family relationships between her and her father. In this creative piece Long stressest that new relations can not be made if old relationships are still broken. A family cannot expect to build a new relationships if one person is still stuck on their past relationship. Long and her father had a weak father daughter relationship and she wanted to fix their bond. Her family hides that there family is broken by patching holes. Long later realized that sometimes you cannot fix a broken bond if one person isn 't ready for a new beginning. Symbolism was applied to her piece to expose to readers that people tend to conceal the family issues. When long 's father patches the holes the family would watch like he is performing so kind of art. Long stated “The ritual of patching holes would take places soon, as my mother didn 't want anyone to come and see the holes, see that our house and family were broken.” The family would sit and watch their father patch holes like it was some source of entertainment. When long counted how her father said no words to her but he said abou 45 words to the dog. This revealed what kind of relationship her father had with her. There was no connection between Long and he father, and she wanted that to change but he wasn 't willing to change. Patching holes was a ritual that the family watched as their dysfunctional issues were being concealed. Similarities are present in the film Precious, Mary and her daughter precious had a frail relationship, while Precious abuse from her father was covered up by cooking unhealthy foods and being forced to eat. Also in The Blind side Oher was neglected by his mother and their relationship was imperfect while his mother escaped the issue by using drugs. The figurative language Long ues through her piece is used to keep reader thinking between each phrase. Her creativeness expose readers to what kind of relationship her family had, especially between her and her father. She also used “Patching Holes” as a symbol of how families are broken and they tend to hide the issues they face.
