Neal Stephenson’s “Snow Crash” is a book completely different from any other books I have ever read. It takes readers on a journey to the future, by showing them how life has changed, in a good way and bad. There are incidents where we see changes in human behaviors and how people act. Technology plays a key role throughout the whole book mostly because the story is in the high-tech future. The characters are portrayed as some sort of “comic” characters. For example, Hiro has computer hacking, sword-fighting, and sharp mental skills. We also see Y.T., who is a 15 years old girl, working as a courier by delivering mails and packages on her skateboard. She also does crazy amount of things throughout the book, which we don’t see normal 15 year …show more content…
Technology has been come a huge component in everyone’s’ lives these days, especially with cell phones, the internet, digital libraries, and video games. Just like the users in Snow Crash, kids and teenagers in present day also use the internet to browse websites, play games online, and also socialize with people from thousands of miles away in the real world. We also have cell phones, which are somewhat similar to what the gargoyles had that were draped all over their bodies. In the book, gargoyles were working for CIA, and they were watching the users every move and collecting their data. I guess, you can relate this to NSA in today’s world, where they also spy on everyone’s life, while collecting their data, such as emails, phone contacts, and text messages. Digital libraries is one of keys resources Hiro and Y.T. have in the book, and we also have in real life. In present day, people are able to download information, such digital books or digital videos, right onto their laptops, phones, or tablets. We also have eBooks, where we can directly download a book of our choice, right onto our tablets and gain knowledge from it. Just like the program Hiro was able to obtain in the book called, “Earth”, we are also able to use that program in our present day life. We can use Google Earth or Bing Maps, which offers us updated satellite imagery and the ability to browse through street views of …show more content…
Maybe Stephenson was also trying to tell us something about the use of technology and how it can also have negative effects. Today, technology is getting stronger and smarter every day. Someone who can manipulate the power of technologies and abuse it can be a threat to society and many innocent people. “Snow Crash” was the name of the drug in the book, which transmitted computer virus that was able to infect the computer systems of unknown hackers. It also transmitted a disease to the user in real life outside of Metaverse, and affected their central nervous system. It’s not possible that this sort of thing can happen to us, but it does show signs of the negative uses of technology. The closest thing I can imagine, is a cyber-thief or a hacker in real life, stealing personal data of someone else. That personal data can turn out to be credit card information, which than the thief can use to purchase things in real life and externally hurt the victim. It may not be bad as a disease, but the person can have a financial loss. We also get to see Ng, who is a Vietnamese security contractor. Ng, unlike others, is almost like a cyborg. With technology associated with his human body, he is half-robot, half-human. We are pretty far from making cyborgs, but you never know if this prediction can also come true. It’s crazy to think that Neal Stephenson had predicted most of the
In today’s society technology is everywhere, whether it be in a car, on a billboard, a laptop, or even on one’s phone. However, is all this technology a bad thing or is it truly a worldwide phenomenon. Even back during 1992, author Neil Postman wrote about how technology is both a blessing and a burden. Many people believe Postman’s views are arrogant or far-fetched, but there are also those who agree with him about the dangers of technology.
Although they can be easily tracked, people overlook the invasion of privacy possibility because of the convenience they bring to every day life. Systems like OnStar installed in cars have made the tracking of stolen cars practically effortless. Similar tools are being used by law enforcement, Penenberg stated “cell phones have become the digital equivalent of Hansel and Gretel’s bread crumbs” (472). He then goes on to discuss how in Britain in 1996, authorities installed 300 cameras in East London. Although this didn’t affect the terrorism, it did affect the crime rate which fell 30 percent after the cameras were put into place. Penenberg closes his essay by mentioning that the surveillance is not only used to watch the citizens but also for citizens to keep an eye on the government. Through his organization, relevant information, and professional tone, Penenberg creates an effective
The snow woman, a short story written by Norah Burke, brings the reader into the lives
In The Way To Rainy Mountain, the author N. Scott Momaday makes a clear use of figurative language throughout the story and descriptive language to describe the nature around them, explains their myths about how their tribe came to be a part of nature, as well as the importance in nature that are a part of the Sundance festival and the tai-me.
Everyday, our world gains a new technology advancement. At first it began with a computer being created in the year of 1822 by Charles Babbage. Which now turned into having an everything being held on a 4.7-inch screen device. Engagements with other individuals are different now. Preferably teenagers would rather create a group message than start a conversation. The amount of terrorist attacks and technology consumed on a daily basis created a suspicion upon the government. Fahrenheit 451 and Minority report authors both demonstrate their concern on the effect of technology and government have on our future.
Mary Oliver in her poem “First Snow” explores the appearance of nature during winter. Although the poem has no stanza break, it is clearly divided into two parts. First is presented the image of snow falling during the day and second part described the image of night when the snow stopped falling. Snow is compared to “such an oracular fever” which means it has ability to teach the reader to recognize the opposite truth.

John Horvat II, from “Five Ways Technology Is Taking Over Your Life,” is an illustrator, researcher, international speaker, and a contributor to “The Blaze” website, and also an author of books. The main point from this article is that technology is a bigger problem now, technology is supposed to be a beneficial resource but not to the point that we get handled by it. The author strongest asset is the use of pathos to get to the audience emotions and make them believe that he’s right. The audience of this article are people who use technology in an excessive way, which is majority of the people, so he is basically referring to everyone who have a relationship with technology.
“Let It Snow” by David Sedaris is a short story that magnifies the extent in which children might go in order to grab the attention of their parents. It is simply short and it is full imagination that would help the reader what it feels to be a child. Sedaris first gives the reader a sense of imagery when he describes the snow storm that cancels school for him and his sisters. After the reader begins to reread he/she might think that the story will be about a snow day but it takes a sharp turn. The story focuses on the hurt and neglect in which the Sedaris and his siblings went through with their drunken mother with the absence of their father. After being kicked out into the cold by their mother, the children are left to think about their relationship with their parents that has been left in the cold. The writer begins to express his feelings towards his parents, especially his mother by providing various details that keep the reader emotionally interested in the story. To the reader it might seem that story is about the children but it is actually focus on the mother. Also Sedaris did an
In summary, both the article and the novel critique the public’s reliance on technology. This topic is relevant today because Feed because it may be how frightening the future society may look like.
Have you ever seen snow before? That white fluffy stuff that covers the ground completely. Well if you have, I am sure you have overcome an obstacle in your life and have reached something “irreplaceable and beautiful” (102). Just like Sister Zoe had said when she saw that snow falling from the sky. This story was very enlightening because the way the author brought in herself and portrayed herself through the character Yolanda was very intriguing. She brought the subject to life in many ways. However, the author of “Snow” uses two specific elements, its symbolism and its character to prove how overtime one individual will be able to overcome obstacles. Not only does theses elements point this out but the narrator also makes an impact of the reader as well.
The presence and use of smartphones strongly contribute to the similarity between today’s society and the society depicted in 1984. PC Magazine defines modern smartphones as cellular telephones with applications, Internet access, and still and video cameras. One way, in which the use of smartphones brings today’s society closer to the society depicted in the novel 1984, can be demonstrated by the resemblance between smartphones and telescreens. “ … Back in 2008, the NSA was hard at work developing a ‘software implant’ called DROPOUTJEEP that could remotely activate the first-generation iPhone’s microphone and camera without alerting the user” (Ippolito, Nina). “...
Though the evils of the world may discourage us from reaching our full potential, fairytales such as Little Snow-White by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm teach us that good will always triumph over evil. As many tales of its kind, Little Snow-White uses a number of literary devices to attract a younger audience and communicate to them a lesson or moral that will remain with them throughout their lives. Since children have such an abstract stream of thought, it is vital to use language and devices that will appeal to them as to keep them interested in the story.
Tobias Wolff is framing his story Hunters in the Snow, in the countryside near Spokane, Washington, where three friends with three different personalities, decided to take a trip to the woods for hunting in a cold, snowy weather. The whole story follows the hunting trip of these three friends. The reader can easily observe that the cold, hostile environment is an outward expression of how the men behave towards one another. Kenny, with a heart made of ice is rather hostile to Tub, while Frank is cold and indifferent to Tub and his pleas for help. The environment is matching the characters themselves, being cold and uncaring as the author described the two from truck when they laughed at the look of Tub: “You ought to see yourself,” the driver said. “He looks just like a beach ball with a hat on, doesn’t he? Doesn’t he, Frank?”(48). Near the beginning of the story the cold and the waiting surely creates an impact in the mood of the character. Tub is restless from the wait and the cold adds on to it. He complains about being cold and Kenny and Frank, his friends tell him to stop complaining, which seems to be very unfriendly. Wolff builds up the story on the platform of cold weather and the impact of the cold on each character slowly builds up.
As a result, the society of this scary inhumane, Brave New World is full with technology that is destroying humanity form us. Yes it is a perfect world and there no war, disease, crisis but also there is no emotions, feeling, love and especially any hope which are some of the necessary part of human nature. As a conclusion, technology controls the life of everyday people from the day they were born till the day they die in this Brave New World.
