My Brother Sam is dead.
One of the biggest and most common fears of human beings, since the beginning of time, is what will happen to them after they die. Many religions lecture the concept that people who are “bad” (need a better word for bad) during their lifetime will be sent to a place, called hell, after they die. Within the mainstream of Christian beliefs, there are many different ideas and ways of comprehending what hell is. Some think of hell as a place of fire, brimstone and torture in addition to separation of God, forever, in ways that represent ultimate justice for their sins. But what bears/conducts you to this place? That’s something Tim and his family are going to find out. Their own personal hell, “war is hell” William T. Sherman
Chapter 10-14 in My Brother Sam is Dead describes the war’s savage nature and the hardships the Meeker family endures due to the wicked acts of man-kind. In chapter 10, Tim describes the woes of life without Father. Not long after British troops come to Redding. Consequently, a bloodbath between the painfully small Rebel militia and British troops. In chapter 11, the Continentals Army comes to Redding. Afterwards, Tim finds Sam with his regiment. Tim, Sam, and Mother visit and Sam refuses to come home after his enlistment is done. In chapter 12, the Meekers find out Father died on a British prison ship. The Continental Army sets up camp in Redding for the winter. A few months later, Sam is taken in for being a cattle thief after being framed
“My Brother Sam is dead” is a historical fiction book written by two men named James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier. This book is placed in Redding, Connecticut, during April is where the book started and was placed. Tim Meeker is the main character who has a brother Sam that left to war to fight for the patriots, but his family members are “Tories” who disagree with Sam’s decisions.
From the day, the first European set foot on American soil up until the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment, which occurred in 1865. Slavery was a controversial issue. The issue of slavery divided up the United States of America to ultimately put the two against each other. The Northern States who identifies themselves as the Union disapproved of the atrocious actions of the South who condone the crude treatment of slaves and the disturbing practices of slavery. Although slavery was not the sole cause of the Civil war, it played an important part in the disunion of the United States. The battle between states rights and federal rights rubbed more salt in the already enormous wound. Southern States who later considers themselves the confederates disapproved of the idea that the available actions of the states to act upon certain situations were dwindling, reducing the power and rights of the states. The set up of all these complications and disagreements led to the secession of the southern states which initiated the start of the brutal American Civil War which lasted from 1861 to 1865.
“It isn’t so sweet to secede, as [they] thought it would be,” a union soldier wrote a letter to home and this is explaining the Sherman’s march to the sea. There is many conversely about Sherman’s march to the sea, some people say that his march was blown out of proportion and others say that it was needed for the Union to defeat the confederates in the what seems never ending war. Sherman’s March to the sea started on November 15, 1864 in Atlanta, Georgia and went all the way to Savannah, Georgia which ended on December 21, 1864. In those few weeks Sherman’s army marched with totaled war on their mind. Total war means total destruction of enemies territory; as 62,000 union soldiers marched to Savannah, they destroyed everything in their path. After December 21, Sherman’s army continued to march on to North and South Carolina. William T. Sherman tactic to
... your beliefs, we go spend eternity in peace with our Creator or the unfortunate ones spend eternity with anger and fear in Hell. Others believe we fall into a deep pit of nothing, that our short time on Earth just ends in darkness. In times when death is the most certain option-like the Holocaust- the true colors of humans come out. Some people are bitter and cruel, like the Nazi’s and some are compassionate and loving like Max and the Hubermann’s. They allowed an orphaned little girl to stay with them and treated her just as her real family would. Even Death, the thing humans fear the most, sees the large scale of human cruelty and human compassion. And while humans fear so many things-whether it be spiders or heights or death-the truth of the matter is that humans are the worst thing to happen to humans. As death said, “I am haunted by the humans”(Zuask 550).
Freedom is a positive outcome of war that people wish to achieve, but do people consider the negatives too? Major loss can come with the brutality of war. In my My Brother Sam is Dead the author helps you explore the negatives of war and the tough decisions for a young boy living through the American Revolution. The young boy, Tim, had to choose a side, to part with his brother as a Patriot or obey his father’s wants and be a Loyalist. After many traumatic events, including the harsh deaths of Jerry, Sam, and Life, Tim decides to stay neutral.
Edwards describes hell as being the most horrific place and how no one is immune from falling into the hollows of hell. Edwards states, “their foot shall slide in due time (Edwards).” Our lives hang by a thin thread above the pits of hell. Such a contrarian view by a preacher must be taken seriously. We can live our lives to the fullest, or we can live our lives in trepidation of being banished to hell. People of the congregation mu...
It is absolutely clear that you feel sad when somebody cheated and duplicate your own things. This causes many people to feel frustration and getting upset when they are facing this difficult situation. We know it is not a good attitude for students, authors, and anyone else to use something misappropriate that they didn’t belong it. I read an article that called “When the Story Stolen is Your Own”. When the author Sherman Alexie was writing this article, he was feeling nervous because somebody has stolen his article and use it in his own. Nobody didn’t believe him when he told the publisher that his story was stolen by someone and imitate that he belong it. Same as the students when they cheated each other and submit the same paper, it was one of the biggest challenge that happens some of the students when they are in the college.
pits, different cells in hell and there is a heart of hell. As Mary and JESUS went through hell their were people there who are begging god to let them in heaven and god says no because judgement has been set. He said there has been many people their way to introduce them to god and they refused. Souls are in hell begging for repentance and the answer is no because they had their chance and they turned their backs on god. Some souls even were at one time of another saved and they were going through something to make them stronger in the word and they though god was being unfair to them and blamed god for the mistake; therefore turning their backs on god. There are many false prophets in hell. As god walks through and stop to talk to these prophets they beg and pled for forgiveness and when god says judgement has been set they began to curse god and talk to him in the manner where they are really disrespecting god.
“Principle, Sam? You may know principle, Sam, but I know war.... It isn’t worth it.” (collier and collier 21) In the book My Brother Sam is Dead, by James and Christopher Collier, Sam, a fiery rebellious college student, wants and later goes to fight against the british for freedom. Mr. Meeker, Sam's father, on the other hand, has experienced war before and knows it is bad. Tim, the narrator, is torn between sides and later in the story decides that neither side is right. Those who pursue war may not realize all the terrible things that come with it. In war there are a lot of bad things that happen to the people who fight in them, like division in families, clash of generations and the disadvantages of war.
4,435 Americans were killed in the Revolutionary War. All of the dead Americans were killed due to the pointless war. The killing and slaughtering by the hundreds of the innocent people would be terrible to watch. However, war comes with injustice; some die, some do not. It all comes down to mere luck. The most difficult thing is watching families torn apart due to the war. Arguments, fighting, and running away all caused by this unnecessary feud between countries. In My Brother Sam is Dead, the authors, Collier and Collier, state the futility of war.
Most people think of war as something great which brings freedom, but most people haven’t actually experienced war. They have not seen the brutal killings. They have not seen the destruction and killings of lives and families. In My Brother Sam is Dead, by brothers Collier and Collier, these horrors are clearly shown throughout the story. It tells the other side of the Revolutionary War that is not usually told. The novel teaches how war causes conflicts and division of families, the unnecessary brutal killings, and questions principles versus the reality of war. In My Brother Sam is Dead, although both sides of the war are shown, Collier and Collier ultimately argue that war is futile.
He gives reason to fear and respect the law of God, lest eternal punishment be your only promise in the afterlife. These punishments are as relevant as can be, so he offers a very vivid picture of hell. The men that he puts in hell give it a realistic twist, enhancing the fear that is felt upon reading this work.
The Lake of Fire has been a theological topic of great controversy. Several cults reject the doctrine of eternal punishment in the Lake of Fire, instead they assert that the place is purely symbolic in nature, and are adamant that one should not take this teaching literally. However, any good student of the Bible knows that although there is much figurative language throughout the Scriptures, he should always interpret the Bible in the literal sense. Therefore, the believer of God’s Word should consider the Lake of Fire a literal place of torment. The Bible is clear that a place of torment does exist, and that it is a place where many real people will meet their final fate. Moreover, the Bible is clear on who will go to the Lake of Fire, and why they will go there. This research will show who is destined for such a place and why. This research will also analyze Scripture erroneously taken out of context by those who claim that a believer can lose his salvation and end up in the Lake of Fire. Scripture quotations are taken form the New American Standard Bible, NASB, unless otherwise noted.
One way in which death can be viewed comes across the Catholic religion. The Catholic believers look life after death in a prospective of three different worlds, such as Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise according to the deeds committed during life. If a person during his or her lifetime committed any sins, this person’s next world will be the Hell. The traditional view in which people refer to hell can be found in the book written by Dante Alighieri, “La Divina Commedia”. The book states that the formation of Hell was given by the crash of Lucifer (the angel that wanted to be better than God) from the sky onto the earth. Crashing on the Earth in Jerusalem, his head formed an upside down cone inside the Earth. This is where is located the Hell. In the Hell, people pay for their sins with different penitences (12-13). For instance, a person that committed homicide will freeze in a lake frozen by the breath of Satan (XXXIV canto). If a person during his or her life commits any sins but asks for forgiveness, then he or she will go to the Purgatory. The purgatory is represented by an island with a mountain (23). One source states that “Purgatory is very similar to Hell; the main difference is that one will eventually be released from torture. The souls that go in the Purgatory are tortured with fire. These souls remain in purgatory until they become sufficiently purified to enter heaven”(2). For example, if a soul in the purgatory asks for forgiveness and pays the punition with some tests, the soul will be released and moved immediately to Heaven (2).
