Many people have heard the phrase “If a tree falls in the forest with no one around to hear it, does it still make a sound?” This phrase reflects Martin Luther King Jr.’s quote “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” If a tree falls in the forest with no one around, it still makes a sound in the forest, just no one is there to hear or acknowledge it. However, the sound of the tree falling is heard by a few creatures living in the forest and that sound contributes to the overall noise of the forest and makes an impact on the surroundings. This is similar to injustices committed all over the world. Just like how the tree falls and obviously makes a noise that can be heard, injustices clearly pose a hazard towards justice. The unfortunate power of injustice and crime can corrupt and taint the thoughts of others and possibly affect that person’s future thinking process. It can morph their mind to think like and support the causes of the persuader. In relation to Jamaica Kincaid’s “On Seeing England for the First Time”, the society that Kincaid lived in was British, so everything that Kincaid had to do was British-orientated. She was taught from the very beginning that Britain was the “best” country and that anything that country supported or did was right, justified, and the “right” way of life. However, Britain hid all the dark truth about the country from her and others and told them what to do to live life the “right way.” This was the injustice that influenced, morphed, and totally changed Kincaid’s mindset that led to her living a different life than she wanted. She did not actually live in Britain, though, just a colony that was controlled by Britain, so when she actually goes sees England for the first time, she describes the disappointment by saying that is was not what it was made out to be. She was told it was this grand, beautiful place, but all she saw was hatred. And not only did the society impact her with its injustice, she was also forced to think this way by her parents who were also told these lies. …show more content…
This is shown in “Serving in Florida” by Barbara Ehrenreich when the author heard that the Czech dishwasher was accused of stealing from the diner they both worked at, and the author did not stand up for the dishwasher and try to defend him or prove his innocence. She just stood by and kept her mouth shut. Because of her silent injustice, (it being unjustified since she knew he was innocent) the dishwasher was fired and struggled financially and then had a problematic situation with money which impacted his life greatly like it would any other person. In this specific situation, the injustice that was committed by the author impacted another person’s life. However, injustices performed by a person could also impact that performer’s life as well, which can be related to the author and the guilt she has to live
Justice is among the most significant moral and political concepts. The word originates from the Latin jus, meaning “right or law”. All throughout history, injustice has been an issue each individual has experienced during his or her daily life. Even today we are still experiencing riots and protests from African-Americans in order to attain justice. In Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 by Anna Deavere Smith, readers see an example of injustice through the Rodney King case and the shooting of Latasha Harlins. Rodney-King and Latasha Harlins experienced racial injustice, which can be described as the denial of rights based on an individual’s race or racial background. Both two victims were mistreated for the color of their skin and were stripped
Injustice is something that has been around for a long time and at the rate, things are going it is not going away anytime soon. Espada states, "This is the year that police revolvers, stove-hot, blister the fingers of raging cops, and night sticks splinter in their palms;" referring to police receiving punishments for their actions as soon as they act in unjust ways (Espada 3). In many situations of injustice, the victim wishes they could release an equal or more intense wrath on their oppressor, Espada shows that happening in an immediate punishment. Much like the underpaid tomato farmers who work hard to get paid next to nothing will one day reap the
In a novel by William Styron, a father tells his son that life “ is a search for justice.” In Earnest J. Gaines novel Mrs. Emma, the godmother of Jefferson a black man convicted of murder in a crime he unwittingly took a part in, response to Jefferson’s conviction and death sentence by working outside of the legal system to find his redemption. In her own way she used the connections she had to make him see that he was more than a crime that he had committed, and more than the color of his skin. She was a motor throughout the story silently pushing people to do what she needed them to so that she could show others in the community she loved their own potential through Jefferson’s final moments, by making him accept that
In the story Tom Robinson was discriminated based on the color of his skin. He was accused of sexually abusing Mayella Ewell. Thus the truth was he was a victim of discrimination. Over taken for his kindness of always trying to help. The story was told that one day walking home, from work he saw that Mayella needed help with some chores so he went and help her. Not long after Bob Ewell walked in and started screaming, which led to Tom Robison running out of perhaps his life. The next day he was accused of raping her. Thus she was beaten up and probably raped. But not by Tom but by her father. Tom Robinson was married to Helen and had kids. While Bob Ewell was an alcoholic who wasn't able to create living for his children. Even though in the story, it was told that the bruises found around Mayella’s neck and the bruised right side of her face could only have been made by a man with two strong hands. Thus Tom had a crippled left arm which made it impossible of taking such action. Overall, he was called guilty of the crime. Thus the truth was and still is that society has undermined it’s justices of the truth. Such as todays racist and injustices crimes. When a police has a free right to shoot another person and get away with
Humans are ignorant. History has been marked by violence, hate, and discrimination. The name and legacy of Adolf Hitler still brings chills to a world that vividly remembers the millions of Jewish lives lost. Such genocide occurs every day. An obscure, yet no less horrific instance of such prejudice is the prosecution of Englishmen in early 20th century South Africa. After fighting several wars, the Boers develop a sense of loathing and disgust towards the English, and pass it to their children. Courtenay’s novel The Power of One introduces us to Peekay in such a toxic environment. The intellectually precocious Peekay realizes at the age of five that he is targeted for being different:
Imagine living in a society where the color of your skin defines who you are. In Harper Lee’s Novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Maycomb County is surrounded in ignorance because people believe that people of a certain color are not as important as everyone else. An individual, Tom Robinson is attacked, and judged by Maycomb’s society because of false rape accusations and the color of his skin. The power of Atticus’s words show society that they were wrong about Tom because the color of his skin does not define who he is and being black does not make him a rapist. The three most important themes in To Kill a Mockingbird are knowledge versus ignorance, individual versus society, and power of words.
For example, when Mrs. Tryon heard Rena was coloured, she was disappointed. “The lady, who had been studying her as closely as good manners would permit, sighed regretfully.” (161) There, Mrs. Tryon might have a good plan for Rena, but the racial society would not accept; since Rena was a mulatto, Mrs. Tryon could not do anything to help Rena in white social life. The racial circumstance does not only apply to mulattos, but it also expresses the suffering of black people.
Injustice is the unfair treatment or a situation in which the rights of a person or a group of a people are ignored. Internment of the Japanese American in the United States affected hundred and thousands of lives for generation yet. It still remains hidden in history memory. As, I researched every information for this essay, what I found is, this story is ignored by people, it made me clear that the Japanese were so brave to face all the problems. All the Japanese American were treated badly because Americans turned their anger on Japanese Americans for a crime that was committed by the Japanese. As Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, and this action made
While her father, however, was left-handed and could have easily beat her in a fit of rage. There is more proof to convict her father of beating and possibly raping her then it there would be for Tom. But since Tom is a black man… he was found guilty. If Tom had been white, this trial would not have taken place in the first place. But he is found guilty and ends dying because he tries to escape from a crime he did not even commit. Finally, there is prejudice in the social class. We see people being treated differently depending on if they were in the upper class or lower class. A good example is aunt Alexandra’s treatment of the Cumminghams, kind, thoughtful People who were down on their luck and just happened to have a drinking streak in
“Indeed, bribery, favoritism, and corruption in a great variety of forms were rampant not only in politics, but in all levels of society” (David McCullough). In her novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee enthralls us by demonstrating the racism, violence, and abuse evident in the American South during the era before World War II. She relates this through a semi-autobiographical narrative, recalling her coming of age amid the tension of social inequality. The protagonist, Scout, and her brother, Jem, realize the faults in their society for the first time, contrasting the ills of reality to what they wish to perceive. Through their innocence, they are able to perceive the existence of racism and gender inequality evident in their town, without being directly influenced by them yet.
Criminals are considered unjust because they committed a crime, but if someone of higher power seizes one’s possessions by force or arrests them or anything similar to what the criminals do they aren’t shamed by the people but are praised instead. In closing, being on the receiving end of injustice causes people to criticize “those who revile justice”. And finally, injustice is more beneficial to the people because it is more profitable to one’s
The author John Smith, a pilgrim who arrived to the Americas, wrote a description of the new land in his book “ A Description of New England ”. In this book Smith shows a wonderful world of vast food and pleasure. Also, William Bradford another pilgrim who arrived to Plymouth on the coast of Massachusetts, wrote a book called “ Of Plymouth Plantation ” in which he describes what really happened, how the pilgrims actually lived. The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast both authors and their books. John Smith wrote about the wonderful place the New World was, on the other hand, William Bradford wrote about the realities and difficulties of the New World.
Last but not least, injustice does not provide the most good for the most number of people. Just acts spawn other just acts just like unjust acts spawn other unjust acts. If everyone behaved unjustly, mankind would return to a state of nature (everyone is for themselves) which would be very unprofitable for the unjust individual due to a decreased likelihood of survival. An action is clearly unprofitable for the unjust individual if it would eventually create a hostile environment for him. Hence, one should set an example for others by living a just life which would create a better environment for him as well as for others.
In Jamaican Kincaid essay “The Ugly Tourist”, Kincaid argues that the reason why people choose to visit other parts of the world is because of “banality and boredom”. People travel for several reasons some being business, celebration and personal pleasure. Therefore, it can be argued that people travel for self-appreciation and new perspectives.
“Get over it life is unfair.” This is a saying that is often quoted about what happens in your life. The fact that one of your teachers, or parents might like one student, or child over the rest is unfair but what are you able to do about that? Injustice. It is a word that is thrown around a lot by people who think that they are being unfairly mistreated. One common theme seen throughout To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is injustice. This is shown through Tom Robinson's unfair trial, Bob Ewell trying to kill Jem, and also the reactions of the Finches neighborhood for the Finches sticking up for the black folks in the area.
